Which TV shows did you start watching in 2019?

Quite a few this year!

You, Sex Education, Russian Doll, The Umbrella Academy, When They See Us, Unbelievable, The Act, Chernobyl, Euphoria, Looking For Alaska, The Boys, and Derry Girls. Also watched the first season of American Horror Story (only nine years after everyone else has lol) and really enjoyed it, but I can’t decide how quickly I want to catch up with the rest as it is an anthology show and each season will be so different. Also watched the first season of True Detective which I absolutely loved, but couldn’t get into season 3 at all when I gave that one a go, so I think it’s best if the first remain a perfect standalone series for me

And I started watching Elementary and The Good Doctor, both of which were very good, but I did find it harder to get back into that style of procedural television. I actually really loved the first season of Elementary and fell in love with the characters and their growing relationship completely, but then found that the episodes started to drag after that for me. Didn’t help that I was not at all a fan of the casting of Sherlock’s brother in season 2! I’m now halfway through season 3 and still loving all of the character moments, but the episodes themselves are just so hit and miss for me. It’s not that they’re bad exactly, but more that they all kind of blend into one another after a bit. Maybe some shows are better designed if you try and watch them weekly, rather than an entire season all one after another, or maybe I’m just not used to 24 episode seasons any more 🤷‍♀️

Which TV shows did you let go of in 2019?

The Handmaid’s Tale. I wish that the show would have switched to following Emily and the other characters in Canada, all of the close-ups and heroic cameras shots of June got old fast, and this just doesn’t feel like a show that needed to be stretched into so many seasons. I think that the show died for me after June decided to stay in Gilead at the end of season 2, the writing tied itself into knots after that to justify her safety as the protagonist, even as everyone died around her because of the risks that June was taking.

Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2019? Why?

Couldn’t get on with Fleabag at all personally which was a bit disappointing after all the hype that it’s been getting. It had some very funny jokes, but it was waaaay too self aware and smug for me, and tbh I didn’t really like the main character enough to keep watching past the first two episodes.

The Crown was another show that I really expected to get into as I find a lot of the online discussions of the characters and the history very interesting, but I ended up dropping it after the sixth episode as it was just really dragging and feeling like such a chore to get through. A real shame as it’s a show that I did want to love, and it all looked gorgeous, but the pacing of it was sending me to sleep unfortunately!

Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2019?

As ever the answer to that is too many! But just a few I’m considering at the moment are Schitt’s Creek, Stumptown, Nancy Drew, Roswell New Mexico, Broadchurch, V Wars, Servant, Truth Be Told, and Dickinson (actually just starting that one now!) Of course a few of those shows depend on if they ever get an air date here in the U.K. , but I’m definitely hoping to catch up on most of the shows that are easily available to watch on streaming services like Netflix and Apple

Your favorite film you watched this year?

I thought that Get Out was excellent

Your favorite book read this year?

Naomi’s Year In Books

Probably A Silent Patient was my overall favourite. I didn’t understand the hype that My Lovely Wife got at all, much like Girl On A Train in fact it was a thriller that I couldn’t get into at all, but then A Silent Patient was a case of the hype being well deserved! I did start to guess the twist towards the end admittedly, but it was still very well done imo and gripping to follow. I also thought that Verity by Colleen Hoover was very good and extremely creepy, although I was quite perplexed to see it listed under romances in the Goodread reader awards! Not that it wasn’t sort of a romance I suppose, but that’s not exactly what stands out to me with it?

Your favorite TV show(s) of the year?

Sex Education, Derry Girls, The Marvellous Mrs.Maisel, The Boys, The Act, Looking For Alaska, Veronica Mars, and True Detective

Which TV shows did you start watching in 2018?

Feud, Sharp Objects, Peaky Blinders, Killing Eve, and The Haunting Of Hill House. All brilliant shows that had me totally enthralled <3 I don’t think I said anything about Killing Eve or Peaky Blinders at the time though actually, but I really want to start using my LJ more next year and keep it up to date with what I’m currently watching. I may rewatch some of them next year anyway and talk about them then, these shorter seasons of 8 or so episodes make binge-watching so much easier!

Which TV shows did you let go of in 2018?

I’m not sure if I’ve quit all of them for good or not, but at the moment I don’t have any plans to keep up with iZombie, Empire, Wentworth, Suits, or Doctor Who. It used to be a struggle for me to quit shows that I had been invested in, but there’s so many promising shows being brought out by streaming services now that it makes it really hard to stay motivated for a season of tv that you’re not that excited for, and have to force yourself to keep pushing through episodes. I probably will pick up Suits and Doctor Who again at some point though...

And The Americans and The X-Files both ended this year, as well as the premature cancellation of Daredevil :(

Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2018? Why?

The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina was one that I was intrigued by, but then ended up dropping after the fourth episode because I found it all a bit slow. And I ended up dropping out halfway through The Handmaids Tale just because I had problems with my Internet connection, and by the time I was back online again they had already taken episode 205 down 🙄 I’m hopefully going to catch up on that sometime though if C4 ever get it back up!

Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2019?

Too many! I just renewed my Amazon Prime and they have quite a few interesting shows. At the moment Runaways, Homecoming, Castle Rock, The Good Fight, Lucifer, and Person Of Interest are all on my watch list. Ooh and seasons 1-12 of Supernatural are on there as well I recently discovered, so I want this to finally be the year for me to catch up with seasons 10-12. And I noticed they have Buffy in HD, so I’m really tempted to have a Buffy rewatch this year as well. I know that fans hate the changes and how the lighting has been messed up etc, but truthfully I can’t deny that I find that clear picture super tempting when I’m skimming through season 2 episodes to admire the difference. Willow running through the woods in Phases say, or Buffy and Spike’s confrontation in the darkened hallways in School Hard, WOW it all looks soooo much clearer than the grainy and fuzzy old video tape kind of quality that I have on my DVDs.

And with Netflix I’m interested in checking out the new Black Mirror episode, You, Maniac, The Alienist, The Crown, and the second season of The Sinner

And I’m thinking of checking out the first couple of episodes of The Perfectionists which is the follow-up to Pretty Little Lies, but I’m not sure if it’s going to be airing in the U.K. or not? Fingers crossed that Netflix pick it up!

And Happy New Year, I hope that everyone who is celebrating has a good one :D
Most of the user base don’t seem to have a clue where they want to move too now, I’ve seen the most references to MySpace actually, although I presume that’s mostly people joking? :P Must admit I don’t hate the thought of this giving fandom the final push to move away from tumblr, but nobody seems to have much of an idea of where they want to go instead at the moment. I’ve seen people talking about wanting to set up a whole new platform, but that’s going to be tough to set up for a significantly large number of people. Most sites are supported by ads still if you want to make running them affordable, but then you run into the same problem of user content being policed. I noticed that DW already released a hopeful welcome post though lol, the owners always comes across to me as a bit too eager to pick up disgruntled users from other platforms, although I suppose you can’t fault them for trying! And honestly it does seem like dreamwidth is fandoms best option if they want to go somewhere that’s run entirely by fans, but then tumblr people just never seriously consider it whenever it’s suggested :shrugs: I’m guessing they want something a bit more image based maybe

I did come across comments on how this is exactly like what went down with livejournal, although I’m not sure I remember it the same way. Apparently it originally started with asking to post porn behind a cut, then it was requesting that it be hosted externally with a link, and then finally all LGBT content was made nsfw by definition and people were asked to leave. I...don’t remember that at all? I remember the main issue was with child porn, didn’t some conservative group start sending links to LJ accusing them of hosting child porn, and that was when LJ started targeting entires that featured drawings of Harry Potter underage characters in sexual positions. It wasn’t a blanket ban on LGBT content from what I remember though, and it ended after about a week or something anyway when LJ ended up reinstating those users and admitting they overstepped. Obviously the damage was done by then though, and LJ’s reputation never did fully recover in the eyes of fandom :(

Which TV shows did you let go of in 2017?

The Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars, just because both shows were cancelled! I haven’t really had any year round shows to follow since then actually. Well there’s The Big Bang Theory I suppose, but otherwise all of the new dramatic shows I picked up this year have had shorter seasons

Which TV shows did you start watching in 2017?

Mindhunter, The Americans, The Defenders, Dont Trust The B—- In Apartment B, Big Little Lies, Alias Grace, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Sinner, The End Of The F**king World. And I’m just in the middle of watching The Marvelous Mrs Maisel

Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2017? Why?

I’ve had my eye on The Crown from Netflix, as well as Lucifer on Amazon Prime, but I haven’t got round to watching either of them yet.

Also I want to try Riverdale again, I’ve watched the pilot and it didn’t really draw me in, but I keep thinking that it should be a show that really appeals to me if I give it another chance as I absolutely loved Veronica Mars and Pretty Little Liars

Which TV show impressed you least in 2017?

The Defenders I guess. I don’t have any particularly strong feelings about it, but it didn’t really hold my attention. I mostly liked it for the Matt/Jessica scenes, and then the Matt and Elektra ship, but idk I found it kind of boring to sit through on the whole.

Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2018?

For upcoming shows I’m really excited for Sharp Objects on HBO with Marti Noxon and Amy Adams, and I’m also planning to check out Life Sentence with Lucy Hale on the CW. I would like to check out Marvel’s Runaways too if Hulu ever actually makes it to the U.K. (The Handmaid’s Tale aired for us over here on C4). And this is going to be the year that I finally watch True Blood, it’s been on my to-watch list for so long

Also the latest season of Black Mirror is still waiting for me when I next renew my Netflix subscription

Which TV show do you think you might let go of in 2018 unless things significantly improve?

Maybe Suits, I feel like it’s lost direction ever since Mike was exposed as being a fraud, seasons 6 and 7 just feel like the show stretching things out too much. I don’t know what to make of recent speculation that the show may continue without Rachel AND Mike, who wants to watch Suits without the Harvey and Mike partnership that is the whole premise of the show?! I feel like I’ve been hanging in there ever since Jessica left, but I wish they would think about wrapping things up soon, 7 seasons is a good run and I don’t see what more the show needs to cover really. We already have Mike working alongside Harvey as a real lawyer now, surely that should have been the end of the story?

I can't be even slightly tactful about this any more, you have GOT to be kidding me

I’ve learned that Black Lightning, the high-profile drama based on the DC character, which had a big production commitment at Fox, is on the move and likely to land at the CW. The project comes from Greg Berlanti, king of the CW’s DC universe...I hear Fox brass ultimately decided that the superhero show was not a good fit into its already crowded genre drama space that includes the DC/WBTV series Gotham and Lucifer

(Article is found on deadline, but won't let me link because of 'spam patterns being detected')

Nothing against this show in particular, but it's starting to look like every single 8pm timeslot on the CW is going to be DC shows from Greg Berlanti next year! (And that's not including Riverdale). Meanwhile their other shows orders are being drastically cut, and we've got to wait until April for iZombie :(

Enough already! If they're going to have 5 out of 10 hours devoted to superhero shows with very similar formulas, can they at least *consider* expanding to the same three hours per night as the other networks?! I wouldn't care as much if they had more space for other genres of shows, but as it is, it's starting to look like they must as well rename the network if Black Lightning goes ahead. Over half of their output is going to be by the same voice next year in that case

The CW renews Supernatural, DC superhero shows, and more

The CW has given early renewals to seven returning series, including Supernatural and the entire DC superhero lineup. Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Supernatural, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and Jane the Virgin have all been renewed for the 2017-2018 season, the network announced at the Television Critics Association’s press tour on Sunday.

The future remains unclear for other returning shows like The Originals — flagship series The Vampire Diaries is ending this year — as well as midseason entries The 100 and iZombie. It was previously announced that Reign would end after season 4. New dramas Frequency and No Tomorrow were previously not picked up for full seasons, with their fates still to be determined, while Archie drama Riverdale has yet to launch.

Which TV shows did you start watching in 2016?

The Good Place, Black Mirror, Suits

Which TV shows did you let go of in 2016?

Well The Good Wife ended obviously, but otherwise I'm mostly still keeping up with everything

Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2016? Why?

Luke Cage. I just never seem to get around to it/feel all that excited to get started, but it is one of the shows that I do want to catch up with at some point this year.

Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2017?

Umm a LOT lol. I seem to keep coming across shows on Netflix that I would like to try out, primarily The Crown and Stranger Things. I'd like to give The Originals another try sometime now that TVD is almost over :sniffs: I'm also thinking of checking out Riverdale in January, I need another teen show to start following now that TVD and PLL are coming to an end :P And I wasn't all that excited for The Good Wife spin-off originally, but lately everything I'm hearing has got me pretty hopeful that it will be a good follow-up

Which TV show impressed you least in 2016?

The Vampire Diaries isn't impressing me that much at the moment to be honest. It's not awful, but I guess that I was hoping for more after all the talk of Kevin Williamson coming back, going out with a bang etc, yet so far it's very much business as usual... The premiere was very good, but since then I can't say that there's been much to impress me, and I'm not a big fan of The Sirens after all the hype that they got as the best villains that TVD has ever had. And the way that Tyler's death was handled was...strange. I am looking forward to Stefan and Damon being switched off together after the hiatus though lol

Which TV shows do you think you’ll never let go of no matter how crappy they get?

I don't know really, I think I tend to stick with most of my shows longer than I probably should, just because I can't let go of the characters once I've really become attached to a show. Probably Doctor Who is the best example of a show that I'm very unlikely to ever let go of though. It changes so much every few years, making it a pretty adaptable show to follow, even if the current showrunner or Doctor isn't doing it for you

Your main fandom of the year?

I don't think I really have main fandoms any more since so much of fandom moved to tumblr? The shows I've talked about the most this year though are probably Gilmore Girls and The X-Files, so clearly I'm still living in the past *g* I'm hoping to get back into my X-Files re-watch soon actually, I've still got seasons 6-9 left to finish this year

Your favorite book read this year?

Goodreads year in review Out of all of them, A Little Life made the biggest impression on me

Your favorite TV show(s) of the year?

It's hard to pick a favourite, but the shows that I'm currently watching are The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars, iZombie, Empire (I'm behind though), The Big Bang Theory, The Good Place, Doctor Who, From Dusk Till Dawn, Wentworth, Daredevil, and Suits

Your favorite Film of the year?

I guess Straight Outta Compton. Showing my ignorance here, but tbh I'd never heard of that band before, so it was really interesting following their story as someone who was unfamiliar with pretty much all of it :P Oh and it's not a film obviously lol, but I also want to add that I absolutely loved the BBC adaption of And Then There Were None!

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?

Suits

Your fandom that made an unexpected comeback this year?

That would be both The X-Files and Gilmore Girls coming back :D

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?

Honestly I was pretty disappointed by Suicide Squad, the trailer really hyped it up for me and got me excited for something amazing, and then I just wasn't that blown away by the end result :( I did enjoy the first half the most with the intro of all the characters and their backstories, but then once we got into the story proper I just found all of the action moments really incoherant and boring. I guess that I'm going to have to accept that most superhero films and action films really aren't my thing, but this was a disappointment after the characters and the premise appealed to me so much. The marketing for this film was A+

Your fandom boyfriend(s) of the year?

Harvey Specter from Suits, he had me swooning!!

Your fandom girlfriend(s) of the year?

Harley Quinn. Even though I was ultimately let down by the film, I still think she's pretty fascinating, and I'd love to see more of her. Oh and I also loved Jessica from Suits, what a fabulous character

Your biggest squee moment of the year?

The Gilmore Girls revival of course! The X-Files was a bit more all over the place IMO, it came across like they hadn't really thought through how it would work to come up with six individual episodes and make a regular tv season of it, whereas I was very happy with how GG wrapped everything up for the characters. (I mean The X-Files wasn't my biggest disappointment of the year or anything, I don't want to overstate it, but it definitely could have been better and had a rushed feel about it.)

The most missed of your old fandoms?

Buffy and Hannibal

Tribune Media Company Resurrects Television Without Pity, Networks Prepare For New Wave Of Snark!

The devilish little mascot of Television Without Pity, the TV recap site that was the progenitor of so many other recap and review sites, has lain dormant for two years, since owner NBC Universal shuttered it in April 2014. But Tuesday, visitors to televisionwithoutpity.com were greeted with a message from the site’s new owners, Tribune Media Company: "Welcome Back, You Devil."

Given the preponderance of pop-culture publications currently offering recaps and reviews, and given that most of the original writers had long departed, it seemed likely that TWoP would stay dead.

We reached out to Tribune and received the following statement from Josh Cogswell, Tribune Media’s chief product officer:

“Television Without Pity was once one of the best destinations for TV commentary. An overwhelming number of fans — including us — were saddened that it shut down. So we bought it and are now working with some of the industry's favorite talent, influencers and strategic partners on a relaunch. We can’t share anything more at this time, but to all fans past and present: Stay tuned.”

I know that a lot of people had issues with that site and the moderators, but any new discussion forum is a plus for me :D

Which TV shows did you start watching in 2015?

I really need to get into more new shows, I don't think that I did pick up any new shows this year other than Daredevil! I'm currently watching The Vampire Diaries, The Good Wife, The Big Bang Theory, Pretty Little Liars, Doctor Who (all pretty old now), and the only newish shows that I'm following are iZombie, Daredevil, and From Dusk Till Dawn. Otherwise most of my tv time goes to re-watching my DVDs of older shows

Oh and I am currently watching early seasons of How I Met Your Mother on Netflix! I watched season 1 a while ago and always meant to catch up with some more, then I subscribed to Netflix for Jessica Jones and found that HIMYM was on there as well, so I've just caught up with seasons 2 and 3.

Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2015? Why?

I hate to say this because my flist has been so enthusiastic about this show and I really wanted to join in the squee, but...Jessica Jones :( It's not that I didn't like it at all, it was nice seeing so many different female characters on-screen for a start, but I just found that the episodes were really feeling like a misery slog after a bit. I was the most invested after the first episode actually, I really liked how that whole Noir vibe with the voice-overs reminded me a bit of Veronica Mars, and then the ending with Hope certainly left an impression, but as it went on I found myself struggling to get invested. I read this interesting article which I think that sums up a lot of what I was struggling with? 13 episodes of trying and failing to catch Kilgrave just doesn't appeal to me as much as shows that have individual episode cases, as well as the serialised element. The pacing was really dragging for me when it was all so serialised, I couldn't get through an episode without it starting to feel like a chore :( And David Tennant still doesn't do a lot for me

And I talked more about The 100 at the time, but I'm still not sure whether I will watch any more of that show or not

Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2016?

Amazon's "Man in the High Castle" is on my watch list at the moment, and The Originals, Luther, and Prison Break are all on my maybe list if I can find the time

Urgh I just don't get why ALL of fandom activity pretty much is happening on tumblr now, not just gifs and fan art. Old complaint now I know lol, but it's so hard to communicate there. Why can't people use LJ still for discussion and meta :pouts: Also there's no way to collect anything on tumblr because it all seems here today/gone tomorrow, whereas if say Hannibal fandom was on LJ you know there would be different communities for collecting together fan vids, recommend fics etc, instead you can't really find anything on Hannibal unless you commit to scrolling through the tags every day and seeing what you come across

Has anyone ever actually made any fandom friends on tumblr?

01. Earliest show you remember getting into.

Fandom-wise it was Buffy, that's when I first discovered message boards and was blown away at how many people you could connect with to talk about the characters. That was around the time of early season 5

02. First anime watched.

I've never been into anime

03. A show you've been meaning to finish.

The Good Wife! I do really love that show and should have binge-watched it already, but I seem to take long breaks in between catching up with each season, then I start on the next season and wonder why it took me so long to get around to it. I've just started on season 5 and it's been really awesome so far

Oh and I watched season 1 of How I Met Your Mother a while ago and it seemed like a fun show, I'd like to catch up with the rest of that at some point

04. 2 shows you abandoned.

The Flash. I really wanted to like the show because it had a lot of fun twists and plots, but I found after a while that I was only watching it casually and I just wasn't emotionally engaging with the characters, so I ended up dropping it around the midway point of the first season.

Gotham I dropped even sooner, I was really excited for the premise of that show, but I guess that I'd been hoping for more dark and gritty and it wasn't what I'd been hoping for. It seemed really campy, so I dropped it three episodes in. That was a shame because the pre-publicity had made it sound like a show that was really appealing to me

05. A series you're currently watching.

Currently Hannibal, Pretty Little Liars, The Vampire Diaries, From Dusk Till Dawn, Daredevil, Wentworth, and Doctor Who are all my favs. I'm looking forward to the return of The X Files as well in January, and I watch The Big Bang Theory casually. I'm also enjoying iZombie for the characters and it being a fun show, although I'm not super invested with it so far, and then there's Community which I probably won't bother if there is another season tbh. I'm starting to lose interest with season 6 and all of the changes, it isn't the same for me without the original study group and their bond.

I don't seem to watch as many current shows as my flist does, I guess that I tend to spend my tv time more on binge-watching past favourite shows, or on checking out older shows for the first time, which is probably not so great for keeping up with current discussion when half of the shows that are popular on my flist I'm not watching. Or idk, maybe my judgement is skewed and that really is a lot of tv lol, I just don't seem to have several new episodes of shows to watch every night of the week the way that a lot of people on my flist do? Hannibal, Daredevil, From Dusk Till Dawn, Wentworth, and Doctor Who are all shortened seasons as well, so it's really only TVD, PLL, and TBBT that I watch year-round

Fall TV Pilots 2015: The Full List

None of them appeal to me that much at the moment tbh, although it's hard to judge from just those brief summaries obviously. Lol I might check out "Cheerleader Death Squad" though just for the title :P And I'll probably check out the pilot for Supergirl, although lately I'm realising that I just can't seem to get into comic book themed shows and movies in the way that most of my flist does :( My ten years of watching Smallville is starting to seem more and more like some kind of bizarre fluke!

The CW have renewed Arrow, The Flash, TvD, and The Originals. Also Reign, The 100, and Jane The Virgin (honestly I'm surprised that they're renewing all three of those shows, haven't they been getting pretty terrible ratings?) And Supernatural is getting an eleventh season

I skipped favourite film of the year, just because I didn't really have one :P More and more I'm finding that tv >>>> film for me, I just can't get into most films in the same way as I can when I'm following characters week after week on tv

Oh and I'm so happy, my phone is okay after all!!! o2 repairs were saying on their website that it was liquid damage and "beyond economic repair", so I figured that was my phone ruined. But I picked it up today, only to find out that it's now turning on and charging fine?? I haven't really played around with it yet to check on everything (and the people at the shop did warn me that with liquid damage it could apparently break down at any time and won't run as it did), but still it seems fully functional at the moment, so I'll take it :D
