The CW renews Supernatural, DC superhero shows, and more

The CW has given early renewals to seven returning series, including Supernatural and the entire DC superhero lineup. Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Supernatural, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and Jane the Virgin have all been renewed for the 2017-2018 season, the network announced at the Television Critics Association’s press tour on Sunday.

The future remains unclear for other returning shows like The Originals — flagship series The Vampire Diaries is ending this year — as well as midseason entries The 100 and iZombie. It was previously announced that Reign would end after season 4. New dramas Frequency and No Tomorrow were previously not picked up for full seasons, with their fates still to be determined, while Archie drama Riverdale has yet to launch.

How many seasons is Supernatural now? OMG.

That will be the 13th season, it's the CW's longest running show ever now!

I've also read that, in addition to Archie's Riverdale, they're planning a (dark) Sabrina TV show for next year. I don't know if I should be excited or run away from it. XD

I read that they're planning on a prequel to Charmed as well that's set in the 70's?

Ah, I didn't know the details about Charmed, I thought it was a reboot. Of course, it makes more sense to tell a new story.

Love Crazy Ex-Girlfriend!  Did not watch it for the longest time bc of the title, but it's wonderful.

Supergirl remains adorable, but I miss Cat and still ship Kara with James.  But yay for Alex!

Fingers crossed for iZombie!

The 100 is dead to me.  ;-)

I keep hearing what a good show CEG is, I should probably check it out sometime. I was pretty surprised that it got early renewal actually considering that it's apparently the lowest rated show on all the networks

And I'm bummed about iZombie being pushed back so late, but hopefully they will announce a fourth season for it later in the year

I think the reason CEG gets constantly renewed is that there is a lot of talk about it and I think Rachel Bloom even got some award for it. It's similiar with Jane the Virgin, which has pretty low ratings and yet gets renewed as well for similiar reasons...

She was repping at the Golden Globes last night as she was nominated for best actress in a... musical or comedy? Something like that. CEG and JtV are the only two shows the CW has that have been recognized for... anything, lol. Beyond fan contests for shippping, anyway.

Yeah I remember hearing that was the reason why it got a second season, but I am surprised they would renew it for another season when the ratings still haven't picked up at all. A consistent 0.2 in the demo is pretty bad. It's awesome news for the fans though :)

I took a break from the superhero shows for a while, but seeing this list reminded me that I wanted to check out Crazy Ex-Girlfriend at some point. I'm also curious about Riverdale.

And I'll keep my fingers crossed for iZombie, considering how many of my friends watch it.

Riverdale is a show that I'm interested in as well! I'm surprised that it got pushed back to mid-season actually, it seems to have quite a bit of buzz around it, I could see it doing really well for the CW

I've heard about it yesterday... I wonder what this is gonna mean for iZOMBiE, but I do hope it will get renewed too. Don't care about TO or The 100 anymore... and I will be sad to lose Frequency but there is no way this show will survive...

I'm hoping they're just waiting until it's aired before they make any announcements, but I don't see why they wouldn't pick iZombie up at this point, everyone keeps saying that a third season usually means that a fourth is a sure thing?

And yep, I'm guessing that both Frequency and No Tomorrow will be dropped in favour of whatever new pilots the CW wants to try out next year. They always seem to have a lot of potential new shows, and not enough slots to fit them all in!

I tried both Frequency and No Tomorrow this year and it helps a lot that they're on Netflix a day later this season. However, I'm behind on both but really only want to catch up on NT. I think that show is quite charming and has the potential to grow but Frequency's time traveling/messing with events schtick lost me quite early on. It had nothing to do with the performances which were sufficient enough. The story was a bit too laborious for me.

Early on I did think about trying Frequency out, but it's always seemed so under the radar and gets barely any buzz, so I just never took much interest in it in the end tbh.

Yeah, the CW promoted the shit out of it, as I recall. And there was, as you said, very early buzz since the movie was a sleeper hit but as soon as it premiered people seemed to review the one episode and then disappeared into the night, never to be heard from again.

I think I saw both shows mentioned in an article before Christmas about what the shows needed to do to get a second season pickup since their option for the back 9 on either didn't pan out. But other than that it's been dismal.

I hope Riverdale doesn't turn out to be the same but I've already seen one review where the person had seen 6, I think, episodes and raved about pretty much everything in all of them.

Considering that the CW tends to keep shows around despite their low ratings, at least the ones they bother to promote anyway, I'm actually surprised that they cancelled Reign. Not that I was watching it, but I appreciated the pretty whenever I saw it featured on my Tumblr dash.

That might have been because it already had four seasons, which is apparently all they need for syndication purposes? They tend to cancel shows after that if they're not performing well, they did the same with Nikita, Beauty And The Beast, and Hart Of Dixie after four seasons

I don't often see their shows in syndication, at least nothing new, now that I think about it. If I recall SPN and One Tree Hill originated under the WB so it may be that they have different licensing deals when they signed all the contracts but everything new seems to only have gone to Netflix. I don't know if something like Gossip Girl airs on an obscure US channel that we don't get up here in Canada (not TOO likely, but possible) but that show would be something perfect to have in reruns yet I can't recall it anywhere.

Hmm maybe I got that wrong, it might be more about the Netflix deal then, Netflix wanting enough episodes to make purchasing those shows worthwhile? I heard that was why Nikita got a shortened fourth season actually, because viewers are less likely to binge-watch shows on Netflix if they ended on a cliffhanger

I actually read something earlier today about the early CW renewals and it mentioned the Netflix deal being massive so that must be it. 8 days after the end of the season for each show Netflix will have it up for streaming so, yeah, I guess that's pretty huge. Although I still don't think Gossip Girl is on there? I don't know why I'm so hung up on GG, I wasnt even a consistent watcher!

I think you need 100 eps for syndication. At least you used to.

Maybe 4 years is how long the actors contracts were for. Rather than pay them more, they can the show.

I feel like it's going to last as long as the CW does at the point lol, Jared and Jensen show no signs of wanting it to end. Imagine a 25th season that's all about them having to balance hunting with the struggle of their bodies not working like they used too XD

At this point in time Supernatural is never going to ever actually end.

Also, odd that the network hasn't stuck with its go-to shows, ie The Originals and The 100, but already decided to jump full on board with their internal DC verse?

Date: 2017-01-10 03:26 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
I guess that it's about wanting to wait until after they've aired before making any announcements, but I assume that The Originals will be safe as they're already losing TVD this year. I read something about one of the actors from TVD going over to TO, so presumably they'll be hoping to get a bit of a viewer bump from TVD ending, much like the WB added Spike to the Angel line-up after Buffy came to an end?

No idea about The 100 though, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ends this year as it doesn't seem like even the fanbase is there for it any more

I don't really understand how they can support *a ton* of Superhero stuff, but not shell out for a full season of iZombie.

Date: 2017-01-15 06:01 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Yeah I don't really get why iZombie is treated so differently, it comes across that it's not really a personal favourite of the network in the way that some of their shows are, but it's ratings never seem all that much worse than the rest of the CW's shows to me? They had a fantastic season 2 and really made those extra episodes count, so it's a shame to see them reduced back to a 13 episode order, and then not even airing them before May

We really are being spoiled :D I love that it's a priority for them to make sure that shows wrap up properly, and they never cancel unexpectedly like the bigger networks do

Seeing your icon - bless them for the shortened season of Nikita that allowed to wrap it up nicely. Such a loyal network haha.

Just the show I was thinking of! If it was Fox then they would have ended on a cliffhanger and not even cared, but its so much better for the show and the fans that it got to tell a *complete* story

IKR. So many network don't care and just want their numbers ASAP. I hate that so much. At least, give the writers enough warning so they can wrap things up even if it's just a little or give it like five/six episodes over the summer to finish it off.
