Which TV shows did you start watching in 2016?

The Good Place, Black Mirror, Suits

Which TV shows did you let go of in 2016?

Well The Good Wife ended obviously, but otherwise I'm mostly still keeping up with everything

Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2016? Why?

Luke Cage. I just never seem to get around to it/feel all that excited to get started, but it is one of the shows that I do want to catch up with at some point this year.

Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2017?

Umm a LOT lol. I seem to keep coming across shows on Netflix that I would like to try out, primarily The Crown and Stranger Things. I'd like to give The Originals another try sometime now that TVD is almost over :sniffs: I'm also thinking of checking out Riverdale in January, I need another teen show to start following now that TVD and PLL are coming to an end :P And I wasn't all that excited for The Good Wife spin-off originally, but lately everything I'm hearing has got me pretty hopeful that it will be a good follow-up

Which TV show impressed you least in 2016?

The Vampire Diaries isn't impressing me that much at the moment to be honest. It's not awful, but I guess that I was hoping for more after all the talk of Kevin Williamson coming back, going out with a bang etc, yet so far it's very much business as usual... The premiere was very good, but since then I can't say that there's been much to impress me, and I'm not a big fan of The Sirens after all the hype that they got as the best villains that TVD has ever had. And the way that Tyler's death was handled was...strange. I am looking forward to Stefan and Damon being switched off together after the hiatus though lol

Which TV shows do you think you’ll never let go of no matter how crappy they get?

I don't know really, I think I tend to stick with most of my shows longer than I probably should, just because I can't let go of the characters once I've really become attached to a show. Probably Doctor Who is the best example of a show that I'm very unlikely to ever let go of though. It changes so much every few years, making it a pretty adaptable show to follow, even if the current showrunner or Doctor isn't doing it for you

Your main fandom of the year?

I don't think I really have main fandoms any more since so much of fandom moved to tumblr? The shows I've talked about the most this year though are probably Gilmore Girls and The X-Files, so clearly I'm still living in the past *g* I'm hoping to get back into my X-Files re-watch soon actually, I've still got seasons 6-9 left to finish this year

Your favorite book read this year?

Goodreads year in review Out of all of them, A Little Life made the biggest impression on me

Your favorite TV show(s) of the year?

It's hard to pick a favourite, but the shows that I'm currently watching are The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars, iZombie, Empire (I'm behind though), The Big Bang Theory, The Good Place, Doctor Who, From Dusk Till Dawn, Wentworth, Daredevil, and Suits

Your favorite Film of the year?

I guess Straight Outta Compton. Showing my ignorance here, but tbh I'd never heard of that band before, so it was really interesting following their story as someone who was unfamiliar with pretty much all of it :P Oh and it's not a film obviously lol, but I also want to add that I absolutely loved the BBC adaption of And Then There Were None!

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?

Your fandom that made an unexpected comeback this year?

That would be both The X-Files and Gilmore Girls coming back :D

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?

Honestly I was pretty disappointed by Suicide Squad, the trailer really hyped it up for me and got me excited for something amazing, and then I just wasn't that blown away by the end result :( I did enjoy the first half the most with the intro of all the characters and their backstories, but then once we got into the story proper I just found all of the action moments really incoherant and boring. I guess that I'm going to have to accept that most superhero films and action films really aren't my thing, but this was a disappointment after the characters and the premise appealed to me so much. The marketing for this film was A+

Your fandom boyfriend(s) of the year?

Harvey Specter from Suits, he had me swooning!!

Your fandom girlfriend(s) of the year?

Harley Quinn. Even though I was ultimately let down by the film, I still think she's pretty fascinating, and I'd love to see more of her. Oh and I also loved Jessica from Suits, what a fabulous character

Your biggest squee moment of the year?

The Gilmore Girls revival of course! The X-Files was a bit more all over the place IMO, it came across like they hadn't really thought through how it would work to come up with six individual episodes and make a regular tv season of it, whereas I was very happy with how GG wrapped everything up for the characters. (I mean The X-Files wasn't my biggest disappointment of the year or anything, I don't want to overstate it, but it definitely could have been better and had a rushed feel about it.)

The most missed of your old fandoms?

Buffy and Hannibal

I love Suits a lot - I always find it really easy to get back into if I fall behind on episodes because of work; it's just very watchable.

I haven't gotten around to watch Luke Cage, either. I really enjoyed S1 of Daredevil when I watched it but haven't really felt the urge/interest to watch any more of the Netflix hero shows, which is a shame.

I've really been enjoying Suits :) At first I found season 1 fun, but not really enough to get me hooked, and then each subsequent season just got better and better with the main arcs and the character work.

And I'm starting to think that my love of Daredevil season 1 was a fluke sadly, I want to at least check out the first couple of episodes of Luke Cage though, and see what I think of it

Yeah, they've really done a lot of development and slow-build. Looking forward to seeing where the show goes now.

I've actually seen quite a lot of people feeling the same about Daredevil. I wonder what it is, whether it is that there are too many similar things out there right now or something else.

I like Matt, Karen, and Foggy as well obviously, but in season 1 it was Fisk that really caught my attention tbh, and I found his dynamics with Wesley and Vanessa very interesting, whereas in season 2 they kind of lost me a little bit. It was still good, but idk I didn't feel like running out to find fic for it either like I did after season 1 ::shrugs: Maybe I just wasn't as caught up with Frank as the show seemed to be, although I did like Elektra

And I'm caught up to season 4 with Suits, for some reason Netflix still doesn't have seasons 5 or 6, so I'm going to have to wait a bit to catch up with the rest annoyingly. Maybe expecting season 6 was being a bit optimistic heh, but you'd think that season 5 would be up there by now, my understanding is that it first aired in 2015?

Yeah, it will have been 2015 I think. I hope it goes up soon soon you can catch up!

Fingers crossed! I just read that season 4 was added in April 2016, so hopefully Netflix will add season 5 at around that time this year

Definitely check out The Originals. I didn't think I'd enjoy it, because I wasn't a big fan of them on TVD, but I love it. I also plan on checking out Riverdale.

Agreed on TVD. It's been okay, but they did hype up the Sirens too much. Sure they were interesting for a while but now I'm kinda bored of them and it doesn't look like they'll be going anywhere anytime soon.

The Originals is one of those shows that I always feel like I should love, but I can't seem to get into. Originally I couldn't get past the pilot episode, mostly because I was pretty much already over those characters on TVD by then quite honestly. I loved Elijah in the beginning, but as time went on I started to find him more and more pompous and full of himself, and well I was never crazy about Klaus. Later I tried watching the cross-over episode in season 7, but I just got confused by what was going on lol. But I do love vampire shows, so I'm sure I can get into it if I sit down and watch more than one episode and give it a proper chance, everything I read on my flist makes it sound like a show that I should be really into

And with all the talk of how badass the new female villain on TVD would be, I was honestly expecting way more :( The only impressive part of Sybil was when she first climbed up, ever since then she just feels like any other generic TVD villain to me, and even her backstory was pretty boring and seen it all before. Much like Julian from season 7, I'm just impatiently waiting for the writers to kill her off already

I'm so glad you're into Suits, yay! And yessss the GG revival was one of my biggest squee moments, too. :D

I'm really enjoying the last season of TVD, actually--the last ep in particular did some things that had me grinning from ear-to-ear with delight. I do think the show lost some momentum with S7 that it won't ever recover, which is a huge pity after it had such a resurgence of energy with a fantastic (IMO) S6. Part of the problem IMO was Plec leaving the show in someone else's care while she went off to set up Containment, which I think was an error of judgment on her part. But ah well, what can you do.

Suits and Gilmore Girls were absolutely two of the highlights of the year for me :D

And oh I loved season 6 of TVD too, but yeah it definitely felt like they lost momentum in season 7. Part of my frustration was that it should have been the ideal opportunity to shake things up that year with Elena gone, but instead they seemed afraid to really break away from her memory with Damon, and even the flashforwords never amounted to much in the end. It was probably more true to the character to just keep Damon pinning away for Elena and her coffin, but eh it didn't make for the most dynamic storylines. So far this year I'm mostly disappointed with the Sirens as villains, they've been a big letdown for me, but I'm hoping they'll pull out enough good twists in the second half to end it on a high note

Date: 2017-01-02 06:19 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Yeah, I actually got the sense that whoever was in charge of S7 was more reluctant to break away from the Elena paradigm than Plec was during S6. If anything I feel like S8 has tried to shift back more into S6 mode with the exception of Damon (and even with Damon, they're only superficially hanging onto Elena IMO. He's way more motivated by fear of going to hell than he's ever been motivated by any woman, I think.) LOL I have thoughts on this, I might have to write it up into a post...

I'm not feeling much from the Sirens either (except Seline's goldfish sacrifice with the twins, that was fab), but I don't mind, heh. And yeah, here's hoping the second half of the season brings some great moments!

Date: 2017-01-02 06:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
I agree, in season 6 you really got the sense that they weren't interested in doing a lot more with Elena's character because of obvious BTS reasons, but then in season 7 they kept the coffin at the forefront of a lot of the storylines, and that never made much sense to me when they were presumedly planning then to run for a few more seasons without Elena's presence.

It would only have made sense if they were planning to end the show with that season, and already setting up for a finale with Elena waking up, instead it really stagnated the show when they had a good opportunity to shake things up with Stefan and Damon. They could have made much more of that slightly post-apocalyptic feel in the season 6 cliffhanger for one, instead of ultimately only going a few years into the future

I absolutely loved the BBC adaption of And Then There Were None

Heh, I just watched the last episode yesterday :) I thought it was a pretty good filmatization of the novel, the final episode especially was very good. Plus after seeing it I can absolutely understand why some people have suggested Aidan Turner as next James Bond :)

Date: 2017-01-02 05:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
The last thing I saw Aiden Turner in was a few episodes of Being Human, and he didn't do a lot for me in that, but good god was he hot in this!!! *g* And I read that apparently the previous adaptions always used to keep Phillip and Vera alive at the end, so I'm really glad that the BBC adaption did a proper adaption and kept it more or less faithful to the novel :I really need to read more Agatha Christie this year: I thought the way that Vera's character was handled was particularly interesting and well-done

I've seen the 1945 version a bunch of times, and it's a good movie, but yeah, it does cop out on the ending and leave Phillip and Vera alive and in love, LOL. I haven't seen the new BBC adaptation yet, but I really should. The book was one of my favorites when I was a teenager.

I guess I can understand the temptation to have some sort of hopeful ending, it's so unusual to end it with everyone dead, but at the same time a happy ending completely misses the point! The BBC adaption is the only one that I've seen, and I definitely recommend it

Heh same, they've really awakened my inner slasher! I could mostly take or leave the episodes in season 1 tbh, but their dynamic was so appealing to me that I just had to keep on watching, and then I ended up really loving the show as well by the end of season 2

I've been seeking out sooo much fic for them on Archive Of Our Own, I'd love if you had any fic or video recs for them? :)

To be honest I haven't seen The Originals beyond the first season, but what I have seen of it is quite good. Mostly because I love Rebekah and I loved seeing her being the HBIC that she is. And I really like some of the other women characters featured, as well. ♥

That's basically the general consensus that I've seen regarding Suicide Squad. I haven't seen it, but many people were so hyped for it, but the end result led to mixed reactions, mostly disappointment. I'm hoping that the Harley Quinn movie will be much better.

Date: 2017-01-02 08:27 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Most people on my flist seem to like The Originals more than TVD if anything, so I definitely want to give it a proper shot at some point

And Suicide Squad looked really fun and interesting in the trailers, but the plot just falls apart IMO. They had have some interesting characters and ideas, I loved the idea of a film focusing on the bad guys, but it all felt so unfocused. None of them were even allowed to be all that bad really, and they all bonded as a team who had one another's backs unrealistically fast IMO, which didn't exactly fit with the hype that the film got with worst good guys ever. A lot of it felt like any other team building movie once the story got going

I would love to see the Harley Quinn movie still though as I really like how Margot plays her

Well, there is this huge spoiler floating around about TVD and it's end, but I don't know if you wanna know, so I'm not saying. If that's true, the show MIGHT go out with a huge BANG... but who knows?

You're still watching the Big Bang Theory! How are you finding it? Did you watch the new X-Files eps this year? The eps were so familiar it was scary because that was twenty years ago! And they even kept the same opening. Oooh. :-)

I almost dressed up as Harley Quinn for Halloween. I like her look and had Googled temporary hair dye and everything. But in the end, it wasn't in my budget. Never saw the movie, though.

Straight Outta Compton was interesting. I had never heard of them, either!

Oooh, that Goodreads year in review page is so nifty. Maybe I should revive my Goodreads account.

(I mean The X-Files wasn't my biggest disappointment of the year or anything, I don't want to overstate it, but it definitely could have been better and had a rushed feel about it.

I think The X-Files maybe was my biggest fandom disappointment of the year. I mean, they had so much time to come up with a compelling, COHERENT, story, and instead it was like they just threw something together. There were definitely moments I liked, and the Darin Morgan episode was good (though not on par with his older stuff), but I really wish they (particularly Chris Carter) had put more thought and care into it and made it really special. And then ending on a cliffhanger when they don't know when/if they're going to make more...ugh.

Date: 2017-01-03 01:25 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Aapparently they didn't have all that much time to come up with the stories in the end, I read something about them being pretty pushed for time when it came to putting the episodes together, it seemed like it was just the negotiations that took a long time? I think they had a pretty short window to get it all done because of everyone's schedules. But you would have thought that CC could have spend more time on the planning than he did. It really did come across like they had no idea how things would work differently with a shortened season, so they just tried to cram their original plans in those six episodes, when they could have easily either had six separate MotW episodes, or a mini-series devoted to the myth-arc. Still I was so nostalgic at seeing Mulder and Scully together again that it could never have been my biggest disappointment of the year sadly, I'm so easy :P

Forever pissed that they ended it on a cliffhanger though, and are now saying that they don't think that more episodes are going to happen :(

I'd like to give The Originals another try sometime now that TVD is almost over :sniffs:

Do iiiiit! I really like the way The Originals does its character/narrative arcs. It's a lot less MAXIMUM SHOCK VALUE TWIST IN LAST 10 SECONDS and more hhhoooooly craaaap IT'S ALL COMING TOGETHER. (Which is how I thought S2 and 3 of TVD felt.)

I don't think I really have main fandoms any more since so much of fandom moved to tumblr? :((( Honestly you're one of the very few I see posting on LJ anymore. It's heartening to see so much response to your posts, though! :D
I think reblogging with commentary in tags is much less effort, plus it has an instant recap of relevant scene(s) pre-installed. What I don't get at all is being fannish on twitter. HOW. WHY.

Date: 2017-01-03 01:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Tumblr definitely feels like the easy way of being fannish, because you can pretty much keep reblogging stuff every day without much effort, whereas sometimes it's harder to think of what to post on your LJ. Having a proper discussion on LJ is soooo much more rewarding though :(

And I don't get fandom on twitter AT ALL lol, but apparently it is a pretty big thing over there. Young people these days are strange :P

I've been meaning to watch Luke Cage since everyone seems to think it was pretty decent, but I haven't been able to find the time, and its been sitting lower on my priority list as a show that I haven't started yet/won't get a second season for a while.

There was a post I saw on tumblr talking about how Suicide Squad was kind of what people were thinking would happen with the first Iron Man movie- you make the trailer too good to the point that the actual product is a letdown.

Date: 2017-01-03 01:41 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Haha yeah that was probably part of it, the trailer just looked so fun and kickass that you thought that you couldn't possibly dislike it/the critics were just being nitpicky, but then it really wasn't that good :( There were some fun individual scenes, particularly at the beginning when they're all still imprisoned, but it just didn't come together as a good movie IMO
