Which TV shows did you start watching in 2019?

Quite a few this year!

You, Sex Education, Russian Doll, The Umbrella Academy, When They See Us, Unbelievable, The Act, Chernobyl, Euphoria, Looking For Alaska, The Boys, and Derry Girls. Also watched the first season of American Horror Story (only nine years after everyone else has lol) and really enjoyed it, but I can’t decide how quickly I want to catch up with the rest as it is an anthology show and each season will be so different. Also watched the first season of True Detective which I absolutely loved, but couldn’t get into season 3 at all when I gave that one a go, so I think it’s best if the first remain a perfect standalone series for me

And I started watching Elementary and The Good Doctor, both of which were very good, but I did find it harder to get back into that style of procedural television. I actually really loved the first season of Elementary and fell in love with the characters and their growing relationship completely, but then found that the episodes started to drag after that for me. Didn’t help that I was not at all a fan of the casting of Sherlock’s brother in season 2! I’m now halfway through season 3 and still loving all of the character moments, but the episodes themselves are just so hit and miss for me. It’s not that they’re bad exactly, but more that they all kind of blend into one another after a bit. Maybe some shows are better designed if you try and watch them weekly, rather than an entire season all one after another, or maybe I’m just not used to 24 episode seasons any more 🤷‍♀️

Which TV shows did you let go of in 2019?

The Handmaid’s Tale. I wish that the show would have switched to following Emily and the other characters in Canada, all of the close-ups and heroic cameras shots of June got old fast, and this just doesn’t feel like a show that needed to be stretched into so many seasons. I think that the show died for me after June decided to stay in Gilead at the end of season 2, the writing tied itself into knots after that to justify her safety as the protagonist, even as everyone died around her because of the risks that June was taking.

Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2019? Why?

Couldn’t get on with Fleabag at all personally which was a bit disappointing after all the hype that it’s been getting. It had some very funny jokes, but it was waaaay too self aware and smug for me, and tbh I didn’t really like the main character enough to keep watching past the first two episodes.

The Crown was another show that I really expected to get into as I find a lot of the online discussions of the characters and the history very interesting, but I ended up dropping it after the sixth episode as it was just really dragging and feeling like such a chore to get through. A real shame as it’s a show that I did want to love, and it all looked gorgeous, but the pacing of it was sending me to sleep unfortunately!

Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2019?

As ever the answer to that is too many! But just a few I’m considering at the moment are Schitt’s Creek, Stumptown, Nancy Drew, Roswell New Mexico, Broadchurch, V Wars, Servant, Truth Be Told, and Dickinson (actually just starting that one now!) Of course a few of those shows depend on if they ever get an air date here in the U.K. , but I’m definitely hoping to catch up on most of the shows that are easily available to watch on streaming services like Netflix and Apple

Your favorite film you watched this year?

I thought that Get Out was excellent

Your favorite book read this year?

Naomi’s Year In Books

Probably A Silent Patient was my overall favourite. I didn’t understand the hype that My Lovely Wife got at all, much like Girl On A Train in fact it was a thriller that I couldn’t get into at all, but then A Silent Patient was a case of the hype being well deserved! I did start to guess the twist towards the end admittedly, but it was still very well done imo and gripping to follow. I also thought that Verity by Colleen Hoover was very good and extremely creepy, although I was quite perplexed to see it listed under romances in the Goodread reader awards! Not that it wasn’t sort of a romance I suppose, but that’s not exactly what stands out to me with it?

Your favorite TV show(s) of the year?

Sex Education, Derry Girls, The Marvellous Mrs.Maisel, The Boys, The Act, Looking For Alaska, Veronica Mars, and True Detective

Your favorite online fandom community of the year?

Honestly I feel more out of step with fandom every year. I’ve been spending more time on twitter lately, and the shows I come across the most in my little corner are probably Farscape, X-Files, Hannibal, Doctor Who, and Veronica Mars, but with DW and VM everyone just seems super angry and opposed to one another. And then even in a fandom which is all positive like Hannibal, I feel like I don’t quite fit. Maybe I’m becoming a gigantic prude in my advancing age, but while I love reading any kind of fan fic in private, sometimes it feels like most of Hannigram fandom consists of sharing sexually explicit jokes and artwork which isn’t really my thing. That’s probably not an entirely fair summation of the fandom, and I’m sure it’s more of a me thing, but I just feel extremely uncomfortable jumping in to a discussion for example on what a needy bitch Will is and look at him here blatantly presenting his bottom to Hannibal in this screen cap. Honestly I’m cringing just writing that, I’m definitely getting old XD

People can talk about whatever they want of course to be clear, it just makes me feel a bit at odds with the general fandom feel I suppose when I feel like I don’t fit at all, even when it’s a show and a couple that I do actually love. The fandoms I have been enjoying the most on twitter are Farscape and X-Files, it’s nice to see how active they both still are, and it feels easier there to just focus on appreciating the characters and the storylines

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?

Maybe The Boys? Although I’m not really in the fandom as such

Your fandom that made an unexpected comeback this year?

Veronica Mars

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?

Probably Big Little Lies. Turns out all of the people saying that it didn’t need a follow up were absolutely right :( I didn’t hate it, but certainly the ending of the first season would have been a far more powerful image to end it on. At least it gave us a lot of funny and memorable Renata moments I suppose?

Your biggest squee moment of the year?

Gosh I don’t know, probably anything to do with the fifth episode of The Marvellous Mrs.Maisel? Absolutely love Midge and Lenny Bruce, so I was pretty much dying of squee throughout their scenes!

The most missed of your old fandoms?

The Big Bang Theory ended this past year and I will miss it, even if I do sometimes feel like the sole fan of it online *g* I had a ton of trouble buying the special limited edition for the complete series actually! I had it ordered with amazon.co.uk, and then nobody there seemed to understand my frustration when they send me an email saying that it was cancelled because of trouble with their supplier, and so then when it did briefly come on sale after that I lost out on buying it completely because all the available stock sold out within minutes and my order had obviously already been cancelled by then. I was so pissed that they had interfered with my order, I send them several emails arguing that I had been happy to wait until it come in stock and they should have never cancelled it without my agreement, but I couldn’t seem to get through to anyone :(

I’ve got a copy ordered from the American site at the moment anyway, just annoying that it’s costing me over £60 more than my original order with amazon.co.uk, fingers crossed that it’s all okay when it gets here

Happy New Year!

The Boys is really good. I was actually surprised by how much I ended up liking it.

I totally get what you're saying about Elementary! I love the show, but some episodes are simply boring and the seasons are long. I actually dropped it after S2 because I really hated Mycroft. Eventually I caught up during S4, but I probably liked the idea of the show more than the show itself after S1 if that makes sense.

Happy New Year!

I’m glad it wasn’t just me anyway, to be totally honest I kept associating the actor for Mycroft with the funny Welsh flatmate that he played in Notting Hill when he was dancing around in his pants, it was really weird and off-putting to me when him and Joan started sleeping together....

I wasn’t as into the end of season 2 at all really and that whole plot with Mycroft, especially after how much I had loved the Moriarty episodes at the end of the first season. I did like the addition of Kitty in season 3 more, but yeah I know exactly what you mean about it sometimes feeling like liking the idea of the show more than actually watching it. I love the characters very much and so I do want to catch up with the entire series, but it can weirdly feel like a chore at times when you’re actually binging the episodes?

Idk maybe I just don’t have the attention span any more, I had similar issues with watching the 11th season of Supernatural as it got nearer towards the end. It’s weird to think that it’s not that long since 22-24 episodes were the norm, since then I’ve gotten so comfortable with almost all of my current shows just coming out with 8-10 episodes once a year to catch up with

And I was surprised at how much I fell in love with The Boys as well, those kind of comic based shows aren’t always my thing, but right from the beginning I thought that it was really clever and well done and the characters were drawing me in immediately. I find Homelander especially fascinating, if there was any show from this year where I’d be interested in finding fanfic and exploring the characters and the world more, then that’s definitely the one. I’m just not always sure where to even find fandom these days, I follow a few official accounts for that show, but then that’s not really the same thing...

Binging one season (S3 in my case) was fine, but I do know what you mean by it becoming a chore. And I can totally see how Supernatural can become the same. I used to watch Hawaii Five-0 and I cannot imagine continuing it. I dropped it after S5 and there are on S10 now. I don't mind longer seasons when it's something I watch on a weekly basis though.

I'm definitely the wrong person to ask. Fandom involvement for me is making icons and reading fanfic. For fanfic I only ever use AO3.
At least before Tumblr suspended my account I could look at pretty gifs and came across some meta occasionally.

Never watched AHS because I'm such a baby when it comes to anything scary or creepy, lol, but from what I've heard the first season really was the best.

I loved The Big Bang Theory, too. I did feel it was maybe time for it to end, but that didn't make it any less sad to see it go. At least the reruns are on TV all the time!

TBBT is very much like Friends to me in the comforting familiarity of it, but while it seems that Friends is still very popular, you do struggle to find anyone saying anything positive much about TBBT, almost seems like it’s the cool thing to hate it. I agree that it was time for it to end, but definitely it’s the kind of sitcom where I can just waste most of the day on watching episode after episode XD

And heh I’m a total baby as well, I was absolutely terrified for most of The Haunting Of Hill House, but weirdly AHS didn’t particularly bother me. I can’t think of any scene in that show that really scared me, whereas the tension buildup in Hill House was absolutely terrifying to me. I did really enjoy AHS though and seeing it all come together, even if a few of the big plot twists had already been spoiled for me long ago

Happy New Year to you.

Elementary was good for me but like you lagged for me as well in later seasons. The final season did the show a lot of justice for me anyway.

I did watch Nancy Drew but may stop after this season. Not what I had intended. And I wanted to start The Handmaids tale but hadn't got that far.

It is a show where I very much want to watch it to its conclusion for Sherlock and Joan’s relationship, but honestly I think it’s just a case of wishing that it wasn’t 24 procedural episodes to get through every season when what I really care about is the characters and their relationship to one another. I did think that having so many episodes really worked in the shows favour when it came to the first season, because that meant that they could spend so much time on the bond gradually growing between them, but in seasons 2 and 3 I’m wishing that the episode order could have been cut to a more manageable 18-20 episodes frankly. 24 per season is an awful lot of cases :P

And I’ve seen a few people say the same and I’m curious, what was it you didn’t like about Nancy Drew?

I like that Ned was in it which I really liked in the books. The show is a bit slow for me. It has a plot but I just think maybe too many things going on. It is centered on one story but attached to others small things as well. It does have suspenseful moments as well. I guess it isn't doing it for me like the books did and the Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys hour back in the day. I don't know if the CW will renew it. The ratings are not good from what I have read.

Ah okay, that’s a shame as I figured that it would be a reasonably big hit for them with the Riverdale connection, but then I’m never sure what actually consists of a hit for the CW. I know they used to make a lot of money through their deals with Netflix, but I’m not sure what’s happening with that any more as they no longer seem to be putting their new shows on Netflix (not in the U.K. at least), and even their formerly successful Netflix shows like Dynasty aren’t being added weekly any more

And I used to enjoy the books as well, that’s why I’ve been so curious about checking it out :)

I didn’t hate the second season, I actually thought that it started pretty strongly even, but then it just seemed to fizzle out towards the end and never really come to anything. It’s not a bad season of tv I don’t think, but people’s reactions have been coloured by how unnecessary it feels when season 1 worked perfectly as it was.

Supposedly there were a lot of problems between the scenes too with the new directors work being edited in order to bring it more in line with the previous directors work, and so it just ended up feeling like there wasn’t the same consistent vision as season 1 had

With American Horror Story, you can probably watch a lot of the earlier seasons concurrently or out of order but I would recommend that you do Coven (3) before Apocalypse (8) as Apocalypse contains too many spoilers for Coven.

I’m not sure what’s the best way of going about it at the moment, normally I would watch them all in order, but tbh I watched the first episode of Asylum and wasn’t all that into it... It seems like it’s a lot of people’s favourite, but that’s when it kind of hit me that I’m not sure if I’m that into the idea of an anthology show with a whole new set of characters every season when that’s generally not what appeals to me about tv if that makes sense? I prefer following the same characters, falling in love with them and really getting invested in what happens to them.

The setting for Asylum did sound like a very cool concept, but frankly none of the characters in the first episode of Asylum grabbed me in the way that Violet and Tate did from season 1. I should have given it more of a chance I suppose, but that was just my knee jerk reaction to wonder if I was that into the idea of following an anthology show through a wipe of the slate every season. Maybe I will check out Coven and Apocalypse next though as I have heard that Apocalypse brings a lot of former characters back, and that’s the kind of thing that excites me more tbh.

Elementary is one of my favorite shows. I love the characters (and never had much of an issue with Mycroft but I was on a forum that did have issues with him) and fine with procedurals.

I liked TBBT but for some reason, I got away from watching it and since it's not available on any of the streaming platforms, I never caught up with it again though I do plan to.

I was one who wanted a second season of BLL because I felt there was too much unresolved and I haven't seen the second season yet since there's just way too much tv on now.

Honestly I just wasn’t that into the casting for Mycroft, maybe I would have been more invested in him and in his relationship with Sherlock if not for that. I’ll be shallow and admit that he just wasn’t who I had pictured for Sherlock’s brother, and I wouldn’t really have been a fan of the show pairing him with Joan even with different casting I don’t think

And I was excited to get another season of BLL at first as well, but I did end up disappointed because it didn’t live up to the first season imo. Taken on its own merits though, it wasn’t a bad season of tv, and it was nice to get a few of the plot lines resolved. It just didn’t really line up well enough with the first season for me, a few of the plot lines felt quite inconsistent even with what I had previously understood of the characters and their relationships, and just overall season 1’s ending would have been a much stronger note to leave the show on

Maybe smug isn’t the right word exactly, but it was just how often she was mugging to the camera that was putting me off, it makes it really hard to get into the story when it’s that self-aware and making asides to the audience every ten seconds. And yep, I definitely didn’t connect much to the main character

I’ve been hoping that Stumptown gets added somewhere as it sounds like an interesting show, I do like those kind of detective stories, but I have noticed quite a few people seem to be souring on it lately :(

I’m definitely the exception it seems in not enjoying it that much, and in all fairness it does make for a good comedy show as it was very funny in what I saw of it, it just wasn’t my kind of show when it came to emotionally investing in the characters and that world I suppose

Happy new year!

Yeah, Hannibal fandom is special. (I haven't seen the show yet, but am lurking a lot and reading fic.) I remember that post and it made me cringe too. It also seems to be pretty centered on tumblr, I haven't found much on dw and lj. And as always the women don't get enough love.

Hannibal is a genuinely welcoming and creative fandom when it comes to fic and arc, but if I’m honest, I do wish that it was easier to come across more meta and discussions, rather than pics of Will in bondage gear....Maybe I’m being unfair here though and just not looking in the right places, idk. It probably doesn’t help that twitter especially isn’t really designed for long essays, it is more about posting pics and quick comments

I have found that a lot of today’s fandom can be really extra too when it comes to the actors. I like admiring nice pics of an actor or actress as much as anyone, but when it gets to ‘Gillian Anderson is such a Goddess, my sexual orientation is Gillian Anderson’ type stuff, that’s when I end up feeling like the staid and out of touch old lady when I see how excited and dare I say over the top everyone else seems to be getting. Maybe it’s just different generations 🤷‍♀️ Although I don’t know if it’s actually accurate that the majority of fandom people are in their early 20’s these days, but that’s often how it feels. Don’t even get me started (oops too late!) on the weird trend to call celebrities you admire ‘Mom and Dad’

There's definitely a lot of great fic and art in the fandom. I do have the impression that there's generally less meta around than there used to be. Or maybe it's just gotten harder to find?

I haven't come across anyone calling celebrities Mom and Dad but agreed that's really weird.

I don’t really get it either, but it’s something that I come across occasionally with David and Gillian especially for some reason. Apparently it’s meant to show how much you like and admire the celebrity, but it all seems very strange to me lol

And I suppose that meta is less popular because fandom is no longer based around blogging on LJ/DW where there’s more space to write your thoughts down, plus everything moves so fast on social media these days as well that there isn’t really the time any more for fandom to consider and discuss a well written essay, it all seems to be geared more around sharing pics and quick pithy commends
