'Black Lightning,' 'Life Sentence' Land CW Series Pickups; 'Originals,' 'iZombie' Renewed

The CW has firmed up the rest of its 2017-18 schedule, handing out renewals to bubble shows The Originals and iZombie, while also handing out series pickups to DC Comics drama Black Lightning and dramedy Life Sentence.

I'm thrilled about iZombie of course :D And I'm not surprised that The Originals has been picked up as well, a lot of people seemed to be assuming that it was as good as cancelled, but I always thought that the CW would want to transfer some TVD characters over to it and keep that franchise going.

I just got more interested in The Good Wife spin-off, although I can't actually link to the deadline website for some reason, LJ keeps calling it spam? But I read an article on there today which makes The Good Wife spin-off sound promising enough that it will most definitely be on my watch-list in February

Other new shows I plan to check out are Luke Cage, The Good Place, and The Gilmore Girls revival. And then my returning shows are The Vampire Diaries, iZombie, The Big Bang Theory, Empire, and Pretty Little Liars. I also need to start catching up with From Dusk Till Dawn and Wentworth

How about everyone else, what shows are people planning on watching this year? :)

The CW Fall Schedule has been announced

I know that this won't be popular with a lot of my flist, but meh I really feel like the CW have gotten O/T with superhero shows now, Friday is starting to look a bit out of place with the rest of the weeks line-up! :P I'm disappointed that there doesn't seem to be much space for anything else on their schedules at the moment, iZombie, The 100, Reign, and Riverdale are all being held back for mid-season. I assumed that iZombie had been picked up for 18 episodes again like last year, but apparently not?

And it's looking like The Good Wife spin-off is confirmed now CBS plans 'Good Wife' spinoff led by Christine Baranski

Okay I tried to post a link to the article "The CW Renews ALL 11 Series For Next Season, Including Veterans ‘Supernatural’ & ‘The Vampire Diaries’", but I kept being told that deadline is 'banned for spam' for some reason?

But anyway, awesome news! I was starting to worry about iZombie as so many people seemed convinced that the ratings were pretty terrible and it was at risk, so I'm pleasantly surprised that we're getting a third season. And I'm still here for The Vampire Diaries of course! Although I do hope that we will get confirmation on whether the 8th season is going to be the last or not, I'm not sure that it needs a 9th or 10th season, but I definitely wouldn't have been ready to let it go after this season when there's been no real build-up to it being the end

It feels strange that I only watch two CW shows these days actually, I used to watch four or five of their shows, but I'm not as into the superhero shows that they've been focusing on lately I suppose. Lol I know I'm too old for them these days, but I can't help wishing that they would bring back at least one high school focused teen show to their schedule, the WB and CW used to be known for those shows after all! Still I suppose that you can't really blame them for sticking with the male demo instead, those shows do seem to do a lot better for them ratings-wise
Which TV shows did you start watching in 2015?

I really need to get into more new shows, I don't think that I did pick up any new shows this year other than Daredevil! I'm currently watching The Vampire Diaries, The Good Wife, The Big Bang Theory, Pretty Little Liars, Doctor Who (all pretty old now), and the only newish shows that I'm following are iZombie, Daredevil, and From Dusk Till Dawn. Otherwise most of my tv time goes to re-watching my DVDs of older shows

Oh and I am currently watching early seasons of How I Met Your Mother on Netflix! I watched season 1 a while ago and always meant to catch up with some more, then I subscribed to Netflix for Jessica Jones and found that HIMYM was on there as well, so I've just caught up with seasons 2 and 3.

Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2015? Why?

I hate to say this because my flist has been so enthusiastic about this show and I really wanted to join in the squee, but...Jessica Jones :( It's not that I didn't like it at all, it was nice seeing so many different female characters on-screen for a start, but I just found that the episodes were really feeling like a misery slog after a bit. I was the most invested after the first episode actually, I really liked how that whole Noir vibe with the voice-overs reminded me a bit of Veronica Mars, and then the ending with Hope certainly left an impression, but as it went on I found myself struggling to get invested. I read this interesting article which I think that sums up a lot of what I was struggling with? 13 episodes of trying and failing to catch Kilgrave just doesn't appeal to me as much as shows that have individual episode cases, as well as the serialised element. The pacing was really dragging for me when it was all so serialised, I couldn't get through an episode without it starting to feel like a chore :( And David Tennant still doesn't do a lot for me

And I talked more about The 100 at the time, but I'm still not sure whether I will watch any more of that show or not

Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2016?

Amazon's "Man in the High Castle" is on my watch list at the moment, and The Originals, Luther, and Prison Break are all on my maybe list if I can find the time

I'm finding that the characterisation on From Dusk Till Dawn isn't really the same for me in season 2 :( Tbh I was most into the show in the first half of season 1 when Richie came across as a little bit sociopathic/there was just something off about him, and Seth was constantly having to keep him in check and worry about him. I read quite a bit of fan fic based on that early characterisation, but it feels like that's been all but dismissed as only being down to the visions since Richie became a vampire? I really enjoyed those early episodes, but it's started to feel a bit B-movie to me at times since it's become more vampire-focused, and I'm just not enjoying the Seth and Richie scenes as much as I was, I miss human Richie... Although after saying that about the vampire focus, I am finding that Carlos and Santanico have become the most interesting characters to me this season. I guess I'm still enjoying the show enough to keep watching, but the brother moments are not pulling me in emotionally as much as they were in season 1, and the storylines all feel a bit too scattered at the moment

I am however loving iZombie this season! iZombie )

I also enjoyed this weeks episode of Doctor Who, Doctor Who )

Weird that there was some talk of episodes 5 and 6 not strictly speaking being a two-parter though, they might be two separate stories technically speaking, but the episodes pretty clearly are going to be closely tied together, this one even ends on "to be continued"... It's looking like episodes 9 and 10 are going to be the only non two-parters this year?

I enjoyed the tone of iZombie a lot as it followed Liv's journey to having to step away from her old perfect life and switch to working at the morgue as a zombie, but managed to somehow still bring in enough humour that it wasn't super dark or depressing. I really liked the performance of the actress playing Liv, I'm usually a huge fan of these sorts of shows anyway that have a directionless young person finding their purpose through the supernatural, while still being cynical and snarky about it. I've seen all the obvious Veronica Mars comparisons, but actually it reminded me even more of the vibe that Dead Like Me had!

Really all of the characters beats were great, Ravi especially when he first finds out about her and is just really exited at having his suspicions confirmed and asking why she's eating hot sauce with the brains lol. The platonic friends vibe there reminded me a bit of Wallace and Veronica from VM (also maybe it was just me, but I got a gay vibe from Ravi?) which should be sweet to follow.

I wasn't super into the procedural part of the show to be honest, it wasn't the most exciting case anyway, and I guess that I'd been picturing it as more Liv deciding to investigate the murders of the people on her own without bringing the police element into it. Still I did like the character of the detective, and I suppose that you can't really expect them to introduce their most exciting cases in the pilot when they're more focused on establishing the show. The crime mystery was still effective in bringing in the fun show-specific things like it turning out that Liv can pick up the languages from the brain that she's eaten

Also I really liked the choice of using the comic book panels to transition between scenes, plus it was a nice change for a CW show to have an actual title sequence for once, instead of just a title card!

Full-length trailers are now out for Better Call Saul and for iZombie! "How 'iZombie' differs from 'Veronica Mars' (aside from the fact she's dead)"

Anyone else planning to check out either of those shows? :)
