Which TV shows did you let go of in 2017?

The Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars, just because both shows were cancelled! I haven’t really had any year round shows to follow since then actually. Well there’s The Big Bang Theory I suppose, but otherwise all of the new dramatic shows I picked up this year have had shorter seasons

Which TV shows did you start watching in 2017?

Mindhunter, The Americans, The Defenders, Dont Trust The B—- In Apartment B, Big Little Lies, Alias Grace, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Sinner, The End Of The F**king World. And I’m just in the middle of watching The Marvelous Mrs Maisel

Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2017? Why?

I’ve had my eye on The Crown from Netflix, as well as Lucifer on Amazon Prime, but I haven’t got round to watching either of them yet.

Also I want to try Riverdale again, I’ve watched the pilot and it didn’t really draw me in, but I keep thinking that it should be a show that really appeals to me if I give it another chance as I absolutely loved Veronica Mars and Pretty Little Liars

Which TV show impressed you least in 2017?

The Defenders I guess. I don’t have any particularly strong feelings about it, but it didn’t really hold my attention. I mostly liked it for the Matt/Jessica scenes, and then the Matt and Elektra ship, but idk I found it kind of boring to sit through on the whole.

Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2018?

For upcoming shows I’m really excited for Sharp Objects on HBO with Marti Noxon and Amy Adams, and I’m also planning to check out Life Sentence with Lucy Hale on the CW. I would like to check out Marvel’s Runaways too if Hulu ever actually makes it to the U.K. (The Handmaid’s Tale aired for us over here on C4). And this is going to be the year that I finally watch True Blood, it’s been on my to-watch list for so long

Also the latest season of Black Mirror is still waiting for me when I next renew my Netflix subscription

Which TV show do you think you might let go of in 2018 unless things significantly improve?

Maybe Suits, I feel like it’s lost direction ever since Mike was exposed as being a fraud, seasons 6 and 7 just feel like the show stretching things out too much. I don’t know what to make of recent speculation that the show may continue without Rachel AND Mike, who wants to watch Suits without the Harvey and Mike partnership that is the whole premise of the show?! I feel like I’ve been hanging in there ever since Jessica left, but I wish they would think about wrapping things up soon, 7 seasons is a good run and I don’t see what more the show needs to cover really. We already have Mike working alongside Harvey as a real lawyer now, surely that should have been the end of the story?

Which TV shows do you think you’ll never let go of no matter how crappy they get?

This may sound like an odd choice, but probably The Big Bang Theory actually. It’s not always very funny, it’s not even particularly good writing, but I enjoy following the characters I guess (well mostly Sheldon, Amy, and Penny anyway), and it’s not a very big commitment really. I’m more likely to get bored if a drama series goes bad and starts to drag, but 20 minute sitcom episodes are pretty easy to digest, I can’t see it ever being a show that I just can’t stand watching any more or anything. It’s an easy way of passing the time, so if there’s any show that I’m going to one day rage quit or just get bored of, it’s probably not going to be that one

Your favorite film you watched this year?

I’m not normally much of a fan of superhero movies *whispers I wasn’t even that crazy about Wonder Woman*, but I do have a soft spot for the X-Men franchise, and I really enjoyed Logan

Your favorite book read this year?

Well this is an attempt to link My Year in Books, but umm is anyone else finding that Goodreads just links you to your own year in books when you click on a friends link?...Anyways I read 28 out of 25 books this year, so I’m pretty satisfied. I think I’m going to try and set up a goal of 30 books for next year

Red Water by Kristen Mae was probably my favourite of the year, I found that one pretty dark and harrowing, and those tend to be the kind of books that I’m drawn too :P

Your favorite album or song to listen to this year

Not a big music listener :shrugs:

Your favorite TV show(s) of the year?

Big Little Lies, Alias Grace, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Good Place

Your favorite online fandom community of the year?

I don’t know, I don’t think that I am in fandom any more at all really. I’ve tried with tumblr, but it just doesn’t hold my interest. And I’ve gotten more into following links on twitter this year actually, it’s a good resource for the latest info on shows, but I find it a very isolating experience if that’s part of where fandom is these days. I suppose the discussions that we have on LJ are still favourite online community for me, I feel like I’m just too old and set in my ways to adjust to fandom as it is today

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?

I feel like Alias Grace has been very under the fandom rador, but that’s a show that I’m very happy to have discovered as I absolutely loved it and can’t rave about enough

Your fandom that made an unexpected comeback this year?

The X-Files returning for one more season was a nice surprise, and everything I’ve heard so far has really got my hopes up that season 11 will go smoother than season 10 did

The most missed of your old fandoms?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer as always, the 20th anniversary made me very nostalgic. I must have a rewatch this year <3

Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?

I’m most excited for the new season of The Handmaid’s Tale, and also seeing more of Mulder and Scully in The X-Files. Also I’m getting hopeful for an announcement on more Hannibal now that Bryan Fuller has more time in his hands, plus they have the rights to Clarice now I believe, so it’s really looking like we should get news on a fourth season of some kind soon

Lucifer is an amazing show and literally everyone loves it... at least the people I know and have watched it. I don't know anyone who thought it sucks or anything like that. It's a show I still completely enjoy even in it's 3rd season and it's not that easy to keep my attention for this long because a lot of shows have REALLY sucked in their 3rd season, so... ;-)

I know that several people on my flist are really into it, so yeah I definitely want to try and watch it this year. I did watch the pilot when it first aired actually and liked it all right, the main actor was very charismatic, but then I kept reading complaints about how the comics had been turned into just a generic cop show, so I ended up deciding not to keep up with it. But then since then, it seems like everyone has started raving about it!

What’s The Marvelous Ms Maisel about? I’ve seen it advertised but not sure it’s something for me.

I think this will be the last season of Suits. Now that Megan is in the UK with Harry, she won’t be there anymore and I heard Patrick might be leaving too. It’d make no sense for them to continue it otherwise I don’t think.

Honestly I’m probably not the best person to rate The Mrs Marvelous Mrs. Maisel because it’s a show that everyone else seems to really love, including the critics, but I’m not that crazy about it tbh. I did really like the pilot, but it’s not a show that I’m racing to see the next episode of or anything like that idk. It’s set in the 1950’s in New York, and it’s about the main character deciding to become a stand-up comic and go on her own path after her husband leaves her. It really is a good show, it’s very well written and funny, but tbh I’ve kind of stalled on the fourth episode. I think that I would have liked it more as a movie maybe, expanding on the story from the pilot (which is brilliant and worth watching), but watching that concept in a weekly show isn’t really doing it for me. But then it’s not a show that I would normally have picked up, I only checked it out because it’s by Amy from Gilmore Girls. I’m just not sure that it’s for me

And that’s what I assumed, that Suits would be wrapping up after season 7 now that more cast members are leaving, and anyway 7 years is a good run, but I’ve come across articles talking about how there are no plans to end the show yet, even if Megan and Patrick both leave??? Like okay I can sort of see Suits going on without Rachel (although even that would be a *really* big loss considering that Mike/Rachel is such a big part of the show), but going on without one of your co-leads that the entire pilot was build around?!

If you liked those over-the-top teen soaps like TVD, PLL and Shadowhunters, you'll probably like Riverdale. It gets really good.

That’s what I keep telling myself, it seems like a show that I should love, so I was really surprised at how little the pilot failed to draw me in. I could not connect with any of the characters and honestly it made me wonder if I’m just getting too old for teen shows now :( I don’t see how I can be though! I still love PLL, and I only picked that one up a few short years ago :shrugs:

I'm probably much older than you and I love Riverdale! It's got a great cast and, really, Cole Sprouse as Jughead is just perfect.

Lucifer is so good my 75 year old parents love it! *g* I'm a huge fan of the comics and I don't mind the changes in the mythology or that it's a cop show at all. There's still plenty of supernatural elements.

I’m sure that I haven’t outgrown them at all really lol, I just wondered if that could be the case as it only took the pilot of Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries to hook me, but nothing about the pilot for Riverdale was really drawing me in for some reason. I’m going to try a couple more episodes soon anyway when I renew Netflix

And it’s hearing about the supernatural elements on Lucifer that sound pretty cool! I just remember everyone’s initial impressons being to dismiss it as a big disappointment that they made kind of a generic cop show from the comics, and so people felt letdown by that, so I ultimately decided that I wasn’t going to keep up with it past the pilot as procedurals mostly aren’t my thing. But now I’m reading bits about Lucifer’s character arc and his family etc on my flist, and that’s caught my interest more, so I’ve had it on my to-watch list for a while now

Even those of us who are all about the Marvel Netflix shows weren't that wowed by The Defenders...I'm thinking of it as a necessary plot point which makes way for more crossovers on the individual shows, which is really the good stuff.

Interested to hear what you think of True Blood!

Honestly I think that Daredevil may be the only Netflix Marvel show that I’m ultimately going to follow. I was all fired up after watching season 1 of DD, but since then none of the other shows have really held my interest, even something like Jessica Jones which most people on my flist seem to absolutely love. I liked the character of Jessica, but the series itself just didn’t hold my attention in the end. And The Defenders had its fair share of good character moments, and I would have liked even more focus on Matt and Elektra actually and their connection breaking through, but I just didn’t get that into the plot and all of the mysticism with the hand I guess.

I need to stop spoiling myself for True Blood lol, I ended up watching a ton of different clips on YouTube recently (mostly with Eric and Pam predictably), and now I *really* want to watch the series. I just have so much else to watch at the moment...I’m going to renew Netflix soon to catch up with The Good Place, Black Mirror, and wharever else I decide to binge-watch with that months subscription, plus I have the complete set of Pretty Little Liars that I recently brought and should really finish re-watching before I buy any more DVDs. Whenever I do end up getting the True Blood box set anyway, I will definitely be writing my initial impressions on Live Journal :)

Sure, that *cough TRY THE PUNISHER cough* makes sense. The Hand is the worst villain in the 'verse so far and it's the one that's had the most screentime, which was frustrating. Fortunately, they're gone now, although so is Elektra so unfortunately we can't get any more Matt/Elektra either.

True Blood's freakishly addictive, although for me it lost the shine after the first couple seasons. I wasn't that into Eric and most of the other characters turned into hopeless assholes so it was hard to decide what to cling to.

Sadly I do tend to be drawn to asshole characters, so it’s mostly been Eric and Pam clips that I’ve been spoiling myself for so far *g* I have heard a lot of people saying that True Blood wasn’t that good after the first 3 seasons though, so I’ll have to see what I think of it!

And I have thought about watching The Punisher, but yeah idk. Again it’s mostly the character moments that I think I’d be drawn too (specifically Frank and Karen), but I’m not sure if the main plot would really hold my interest, and the reviews seem very mixed. I might give it a shot though when I next renew my Netflix account

I couldn't really figure out the problem that the negative reviewers were having with The Punisher, since they'd use words like 'boring' and I just didn't know where that was coming from. I found the plot surprisingly engaging, if somewhat hard to follow, but anyway the character moments were enough to carry it for me. Even beyond Frank and Karen there were some great new ones and a lot of care put into their relationships.

This is a good meme.

I agree with you about Big Bang Theory. The geek in me enjoys some of the jokes, but it's running out of steam a bit now.

I had nostalgic feelings about Buffy after all the stuff for the 20th anniversary, especially the TV marathons too. That was a such a big fandom for me and really the only one I've been so invested in.

Lucifer is worth a watch, even though it can be a big silly. Another good series on Netflix worth checking out is Travellers.

No-one seems to like Tumblr that much. I'm amazed it keeps going.

Honestly TBBT has become more of a habit for me now, I don’t find it particularly funny most of the time really, but I do like following Sheldon and Amy’s relationship progression, as well as Penny’s character. And the episodes are so quick to get through, some of them barely even last 20 minutes, so it’s not like it’s a time consuming show to keep up with! They should probably think about wrapping it up soon, but I can understand if the actors want to keep it going for longer, a sitcom must be such easy money for an actor

And it seems like a lot of tumblr consists of younger fans who don’t remember anything other than tumblr for fandom, while older members are nostalgic for the proper communication that we had on LJ, but don’t bother trying to revive their LJ because it’s seen as a ‘dead platform’. I wish that something else could be set up for those who prefer words over images, and there was one blogging platform that I saw mentioned a few times as possibly the next big thing for fandom (not talking about DW, but some other site I can’t think of the name of now), but nothing ever seems to come of those attempts

As you can probably tell from a lot of my entries, I am absolutely obsessed with Riverdale. It does take a few episodes to find its groove though, I remember when I first started watching - it took me till episode 4 to get really into it. I think that's because that was a Jughead-centric episode. ;)

It amazes that people continue to stay on tumblr because a lot of people seem to hate it, I've tried several times to go back and try to get into the fandom community on there and I never last very long, it's just too negative for me.

It is really frustrating when you see people on tumblr talking about missing LJ and wishing that fandom could migrate back here, all while themselves only posting on tumblr and completely neglecting LJ! I’ve seen so many notes on tumblr posts mourning what we once had with LJ, yet people can’t seem to be bothered to try and create any kind of better platform for fandom than tumblr, I just don’t get it. And of course most younger people only really know how fandom works from tumblr now, so they won’t even know how good we once had it on LJ

I really enjoyed the first couple of episodes of The Marvelous Mrs.Maisel, I don’t know why I can’t get past the one that I’m currently on :( It is a fun show, it just doesn’t seem to be one that I can binge-watch for some reason, so I’ve taken a break from it for the time-being

And the first episode of the X-Files seems pretty divisive so far but, from what I understand, the MotW episodes coming up are a LOT better, critics have really been raving about them feeling like the X-Files of old, so that’s something to look forward too :D

Ya, the super-fast dialogue leaves me exhausted after one ep. I definitely won't be binging this one. It reminds me of West Wing, in that regard.

Oh, good to know! I didn't diligently watch the original, just caught reruns when it was on, so I bet I wouldn't mind too much if it's a little different.

I think the upcoming episodes have more of that old feel in terms of the scares, the M/S banter etc, so that’s something to look forward too :D

And it could be that the dialogue was part of why I needed a break from The Marvelous Mrs.Maisel, it’s such a well done show that I really want to like it more than I do, I just haven’t made much of an emotional connection to it so far I guess.

That’s the part that interests me more! It was hearing that every episode has a different police case of the week that put me off it for ages, but I noticed that it started getting a lot more praise by its second season
