Farscape's Justin Monjo Is Writing A Screenplay For A TV Movie Spinoff

Could Farscape be making another comeback as a TV movie? Justin Monjo, who was a writer and co-executive producer on the original series is reportedly penning a screenplay for a TV movie that would focus on the offspring of two characters from the Sci-Fi show, and the follow-up miniseries Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars.

This news comes to us from Australian site IF.com.au, which offered readers two separate updates regarding the work of Justin Monjo, one of which is that Monjo is writing a screenplay for a Farscape TV movie, which would be a spin-off of the sci-fi series, that aired on Sci-Fi from 1998 to 2002.

It's the "spin-off" mention that's key to the plot of the movie Monjo is reportedly penning, as the story would follow the son of John Crichton (Ben Browder) and Aaryn Sun (Claudia Black), who's said to have special powers which made him a target of the villainous aliens, and resulted in his parents having to hide him on Earth. John and Aaryn married at the end of the original series, which wrapped up in 2002. And then in 2004, a follow-up miniseries, titled Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars left off with the birth of D'Argo, their new baby. According to IT's report, the movie would presumably jump forward nearly two decades, as D'Argo is said to be 19 in this spinoff:

The plot follows the kid at the age of 19 when his whereabouts have been discovered and he rejoins his parents on their spaceship. Monjo says the film would be shot in Australia.

At this point, in terms of its stage of development, it sounds like it's only a screenplay-in-progress, as the site makes no mention of any production specifics or cast availability. So we'll also have to keep an ear out for updates on this news, especially in terms of where it might land Stateside. Presumably Syfy, but it may be too soon to make any assumptions about that at this point. The same would be said about the chances of a TV movie leading to something bigger, which sometimes happens on Syfy. Pure speculation. In the meantime, fans can, at the very least, cross their fingers that this project moves forward. Or not? Vote in the poll and let us know if you'd like more Farscape...

I wonder if they will still include Rygel since the actor who did the voice for him has sadly passed away? I understand the temptation to still use the puppet as they were a signature part of Farscape, but personally I hope they don't just include Rygel with a new voice actor because then he wouldn't be Rygel :( D'Argo (the grown-up version!) will most likely not be in it too unless they try and handwave his death away and come up with a reason that he survived it, so that would leave John, Aeryn, Chiana, Pilot, and Scorpuis as possibilities? Although hmm I guess none of them would appear as major characters if the focus is switching to the next generation?

Not that anything is definite yet lol, but personally I would be very up for more Farscape, even if it wouldn't be quite the same with John's son as the main character. So long as they still write and cast him well though and surround him with an interesting cast then it should still make for a great mini-series. I imagine that they would have parts for John and Aeryn eventually reuniting with their son, and aww I would love to see them again 19 years on and happy in married life :)

Apparently the mini-series would follow up from the Farscape comics, I don't know if anyone on my flist has been reading them and what the story is there?

Just came across avclub doing Farscape reviews :D http://www.avclub.com/articles/premiere,93193/

This comment made me laugh "Crichton's pop culture references make him seem like the kind of dick who makes jokes that he doesn't expect anyone to get, then he becomes annoyed when those around him are bewildered. He is Earth's first hipster ambassador to the universe." Cause yeah it's kind of true. Like I get why he would try to center himself by making pop culture references to what he knows, but in the first season especially why is he always questioning how anyone could not have seen the same movies as he has, or saying stuff like how can you not have heard of John Wayne? Not a complaint exactly as I do love all of his pop culture references, just if you landed in space would you expect very alien creatures to have seen the same movies as you have!

And reading the comments reminded me that the supporting cast character-centric episodes never really worked for me. The writers got some criticism for later shifting the focus almost exclusively to John and Aeryn in seasons 3 and especially 4, but for me the show was at its best when it was John's experiences driving the narrative. It was nearly always less interesting to me when the entire focus of an episode was D'Argo, Zhann, Chianna, or Rygel. Yes the beginning of the series was better at spreading the focus, but did anyone ever really pine for episodes like "Taking The Stone", Vitas Mortis", "Rhapsody In Blue"?

One of the few episodes of that type I thought they carried off REALLY well was Incubator with Scorpuis. Maybe because it was more the case of focusing on the personal history of a character we already knew and were invested in, as opposed to some of the strange alien societies that we were supposed to care about in those one-off seasons 1 and 2 episodes, which generally had big roles for a guest cast that the audience didn't much care about? I always liked the Aeryn episodes though and I suppose she was as much alien as any of them, so I'm not sure what it was about episodes like "Mental As Anything" that send me to sleep, but gosh did they!

Reading the reviews really makes me want to rewatch Farscape from the beginning, but there's sooo many other shows I want to catch up on right now that there's just no way. It's a hard life :P
