Regarding Duncan, the actor talked about the part a bit when the movie came out, he said that he was deliberately playing Duncan in a dulled-down state because of the anti-depressants, but apparently the network had stepped in by season 2 and asked for the character to be played in a more upbeat big man on campus kind of way. I think the show had lose its grasp on the character by then
And yes, season 1 was always the best, but I don't understand the ranting and anger that you often hear whenever later seasons of VM are discussed. They didn't have such strong emotional beats, but IMO they all had something to recommend them, just as long as Kristin Bell was there to deliver snark as Veronica investigates!

I mean, its not like they didn't include plenty of Logan's screwed up life. So why not show how screwed up Duncan's life was too? I mean his parents thought he murdered his sister and covered it up. Why was there never more to that?
I totally agree. All the seasons had something really good about them, good episodes that just made you really sit up and watch. And of course like you said, as long as Veronica was there, that's what mattered.
