The Unpopular Fandom Opinion Meme

Name a fandom, and I'll give you at least three of my unpopular opinions related to that fandom.

1. DoubleMeatPalace is one of my favourite season 6 episodes

2. I like seasons 6 and 7, for me the worse season of Buffy is by far season 1. I always prefer to start someone off with season 2 because I feel that season 1 is the kind of cheesy and low-budget show that non-viewers dismiss Buffy as. Yet most of fandom seems to prefer the high school years, and seasons 1-3 are seen as special. Most of the season 1 episodes (exception for Prophecy Girl which I love so much) and yes even a lot of the season 2 early episodes are just cringeworthy to me

3. I found Oz a dull character who lacked personality, and I prefer Tara to him.

2. Agreed. I have love for all seasons, but S1 is the transition from a campy movie to a real series, and thus, campy as fucking hell.

3. Double agreed! *snuggles Tara*

I'm one of those people that think of the high school years whenever I think of Buffy. In fact, I only have seasons 1-3 on dvd. I do agree that the episodes themselves in season one are weak, but the characters more than make up for it for me. There's something about that original gang - Buffy, Xander, Willow, Cordelia, Giles and Angel (later Oz) that was special. I think Buffy just worked better with the high school setting. Something was lost for me in more ways than once season four came around....

DoubleMeat Palace has some value as a satirical episode.

Season 1 is cool. It's the purest BTVS. At the core BTVS is a tongue in cheek show with a strong dose of satire and parody and season 1 was the most that way. The low-budgetness and cheesiness work fine for a satirical show. If you recognize that it's all tongue in cheek and not very serious and trying to comment on the genres and poke fun at stuff and that the cheesiness is intentional, it all works fine. It's a very positive-spirited season. Season 6 has much going for it. From episode 8 onwards season 7 is an abomination that gets worse and worse and destroys the Buffyverse. Can't stand it.

Oz was subtle but he's very human. So is Tara. They're very similar.

1. I like Lana

2. I find Clex an interesting relationship right up to the end, but in retrospect any slashy vibe for me died after season 1. Well maybe after Red in season 2 *g* There was a lot of interesting subtext going on during season 1, but I do think they crossed the feeling over to platonic best friends in seasons 2 and especially by season 3

3. I shipped Lexana

3 Aspects of the show that deserved to be properly developed by the idiotic writers instead of pouring everything into Chloe and Lois and pandering to the comic book nerds with hastily put DC characters for the show

1. Nine >>>> Ten.

2. Hee it's hard to come up with too many unpopular opinions because there's so many groups that seem to share at least one of them strongly, but I guess mine is that I think Martha was overrated? At first I found the hostility towards her before she'd even made her first appearance just ridiculous, but then I found the worship of the character as the anti-Rose before she even appeared, just as ridiculous. By the end of season 3 I didn't think that Martha was all *that* different from the things that people mocked Rose for, but people seemed set on making the character into the anti-Rose, and seeing what they wanted to see. Like yes she was awesome in Smith And Jones, but she did spend most of season 3 crushing and moping over the Doctor just as much as Rose ever did, and there seemed to be this overzealous Martha FTW feeling throughout fandom still. Both Rose and Martha were young girls with crushes at the end of the day, and Donna was the truly perfect companion for Ten in my eyes. I really did like Martha too though (especially her TW appearance), but her fans tend to put me off her when they bash Rose for the exact same things that Martha was also guilty of

3. I didn't ship Ten/Rose in season 2, a lot of the time they actively annoyed me, but I ended up shipping them somewhat in season 3 at the exact time that everyone else was getting annoyed with them.. The whole giggly best friends vibe really didn't work for me as I couldn't see much of anything romantic there, but I ended up melting over most of Ten's references to her in season 3 ("her name was rose", the diary etc). But then season 4 mucked that up, and Nine/Rose are the only DW ship I've ever truly been passionate about anyway

Beecher >>>> Keller. I mean I do like them both, but it seems that most of fandom are crazy for Keller and and prefer him over Beecher. But Beecher has been my POV character from the first.

2. I don't wish that season 6 had never happened for B/K. Most of fandom would seem to prefer if the season 4 parting had been their final scene, but I loved the B/K we got in season 6 in all of its dysfunctional glory. Keller tying up Beecher backstage *thud*, never being sure if it was Schillinger or Beecher that Keller was conning, that final balcony scene. I loved it all, and thought it was a very fitting end for where B/K had always been headed

3. I really dislike Leo Glynn. Not that he is necessarily a loved character, but most people seem to prefer him and think he's more worthy of respect than McManus, and just no. I hated the way he treated Alvarez because of his grudge against Latino's. And I hated his attitude on prison rape and its "leveling effect"

4. And the most unpopular opinion of all :P I liked Kenny...

1. While Chuck/Blair are my OTP, I like Nate/Blair as well, and am not always thrilled at the way the writers handled that ship. Particularly in early season 2 when they seemed to forget all about N/B even having a dating history, and instead introduced the Lord for a love triangle with Chuck. Season 1 was a sucess originally partly because of the Nate/Blair/Serena love triangle and then the Nate/Blair/Chuck love triangle, and they shouldn't have been so quick to drop either of those triangles

It was wrong to end N/B on Blair being heartbroken at Nate dumping her and having no closure in her love for Nate, and then suddenly season 2 switched it to Blair needing Chuck to say she loved him and having no interest in Nate whatsoever, even when that was totally inconsistent with season 1 and not build up too at all.

2. I'm getting sick of all the Dorota worship from fandom, and the show making her and Blair into a comedy double act does the character of Blair no favours, especially when GG is supposed to be a dram and not a comedy. I much prefer season 1 when Doroto was actually used as a mother surrogate for some poignant moments like when she was the one Blair talked to about her college dreams, or Blair buying her a Xmas present. I find the attitude towards Dorota in season 2 highly distasteful, and I hated when Chuck and Blair bartered over her like she was Blair's property instead of a paid employee. It wasn't cute to me

3. I really liked Jenny in season 1, she was one of my favourite characters and I loved her whole arc of trying to become like Blair, I feel like they should have done more with that arc which pretty much ended in 14 episodes. Most people seem to find Jenny cooler this season, but I found her storylines dull and out of place. GG is supposed to be about following the lifes of the rich and dysfunctional characters, not tedious episodes on jenny working to be a model, oand running away from home. It felt like she had a place in season 1 as that followed her whole downfall of wanting to become more like Blair and her crowd, but she just feels too outside the main plots in season 2. And I hate how they've been influenced by the actress by giving Jenny all those bizaree fashions, it sometimes feels more like they're writing for the actress more than the character that Jenny should be

Lets bring the big dogs out

These are two easy ones:

Lost
Heroes
I've never seen Heroes actually, but I did watch the Pilot for Lost a while ago now, and I remember my first impressions were pretty unpopular. I found Hurley really annoying when he kept running around saying Dude like a fool, and Jack and Kate were the characters that interested me the most. My flist seemed quite bemused by those opinions *g*

I haven't seen the rest of the series yet, although I have been thinking of catching up at some point

1. I really dislike Zhann, I find her smug, self-righteous and infuriating. Her voice alone grates on me

2. I love Sikozu, she was one of my favourite characters on the show, and I shipped her bigtime with Scorpuis

3. I never found Stark annoying once, I always thought that his crazy ranting was really endearing.

Oh I've never actually read those books, although I've got a vague idea what it's all about from my flist. I guess my unpopular opinion there is that I think there's a weird double standard from Buffy fans who mock Twilight and make video's showing how Buffy would clearly have a bitch please reaction to Edward, while totally ignoring the Buffy/Angel romance that is seriously not all that different from Twilight in my humble (or should that be unpopular :P) opinion

Buffy did it better of course, but the concept is not exactly a million miles away from what Buffy did.

Oh and really unpopular opinion is that I didn't care for Mason that much, and most of fandom seems to be in love with him. He was all right at times, but most of the time he seemed a bit of an idiot
