‘Veronica Mars’ Revival Series Near Deal At Hulu With Kristen Bell Reprising Role’

Rob Thomas’ cult favorite noir mystery drama Veronica Mars starring Kristen Bell is making another comeback, this time as an eight-episode limited series at Hulu.

I hear the streaming platform is finalizing deals for the new installment, with star Bell set to reprise her role as sleuth Veronica Mars. I hear there have been preliminary conversations about bringing back a number of the other cast members from the original series and followup movie

*flails about* this is honestly the best news ever! Now Hulu just needs to put the show on there so I can watch it from the beginning ;)

I’m sooo happy about this, a miniseries is just what I was hoping for :D I loved the movie of course, but a movie didn’t really give them much time to spend on the mystery, whereas 8 episodes should be perfect for building up a really juicy mystery with all of the usual twists and misdirection

I am both excited and ambivalent. I don't know how I feel about this. I think because the Gilmore Girls revival and Xfiles one were so underwhelming ones to me, I find myself wary.

I know a lot of people feel that way about the Gilmore Girls revival, but tbh (with the exception of the musical lol) I really loved it! I do agree about The X-Files ultimately being kind of underwhelming though :/ But even there, there were enough little moments I enjoyed that I always end up all ~glass half full~ about these revivals. I’m super into nostalgia and my old 90’s and 00’s shows I guess, and catching up with old favourites really hits my buttons.

It will be interesting to see what the response is this time though, the movie get a pretty positive response from what I remember, but I could easily see the miniseries getting a hostile reception if it doesn’t live up to what fans are hoping for. There are already so many viewers who believe that only the first season is worth watching, so it’s always been a show that’s had a mixed response to trying new mysteries and formats

I want to be excited, but with all these revivals/reboots and so on, and with how little I cared about the Veronica Mars reunion movie, I don't know how I feel about this. :/

I’m rarely here for reboots, but I must admit that I do have a fondness for revivals that bring back the original characters, so I’m really excited to catch up with Veronica and everyone four or five years on from the movie!

What was it you didn’t care for with the movie? I really enjoyed it at the time just for the reunion and the whole nostalgic feel, but in hindsight the main mystery wasn’t particularly strong. I feel like a miniseries will be better in that respect though, there will be a lot more time to spend on the actual story, plus there will be less pressure to ease new viewers into it with catch-ups

It was just the whole bringing back everyone they could for the sake of a reunion movie aspect, because it was more about that than an actual mystery/plot. Never mind I hate Logan/Veronica as a couple and knowing that they got back together in the movie. Yeah, nope. And I'm not looking forward to seeing that again in any kind of miniseries revival.

Don't get me wrong, it was fantastic that the reunion movie got made from the success that was the Kickstarter campaign, which I definitely think the revival trend started happening because of that. But still. Some things are better off without a revival considering that some of them don't really work (see: Gilmore Girls, X-Files, Roseanne, etc.) Perhaps I'm being too cynical, idk.

I know what you mean, I still love the movie, but I do think that Veronica definitely works better as a tv show. Everything was pretty rushed and low-budget as well, and there were sooo many cameos to squeeze in there as they were so mindful of pleasing the fans who had funded it, presumedly they will have a lot more time to polish things with a limited series

Honestly Logan and Veronica is something that I can take or leave. I seem to completely be in the minority in that I’ve never really felt the same obsessive love for them as the rest of the fandom does (I find their first kiss super overrated...), but I don’t have the same loathing for them that some fans do either. They seem to very much be a love them or hate them ship, while I’m just kind of indifferent and along for the ride I guess lol. They have their moments that I’ve liked, but for someone who is usually a big time shipper, they’ve just never really done it for me for some reason. But then I’ve never cared that much about the ships on Veronica Mars, same with iZombie, I don’t feel like it’s Rob Thomas’s strong suit, it’s following the character of Veronica herself that I’m most passionate about

I wonder how she's gonna do it. Isn't she like THE main character in "The Good Place"? But then again, it's just a 20 minute comedy, so... :)

They mention in the article (sorry LJ won’t let me link deadline!) that it shouldn’t be a problem with The Good Place, they can work around Kristen’s schedule. And yeah I imagine it’s a lot easier with a 13 episode comedy, as oppposed to doing 22 episodes of a drama year round, I remember Kristen saying that she only wanted to sign on for shows where she could do limited runs and get that balance with being a mother as well.

:D :D :D My only tiny concern at the moment as that it’s going to be on Hulu (which is US only), as opposed to Netflix...I’m hoping that they might be able to come to some sort of arrangement for the international fans, otherwise it will be frustrating not to get to see it and discuss it at the same time as the US fans

I keep wondering if it is a good idea to watch this show for the first time now since I like Kristen. First I was interested when I saw that people were still making icons from it, then the movie happened and now they'll be a revival...

And then there is this gif:

I mean I’m super biased here obviously, but I would 100% recommend Veronica Mars if you’re a Kristen fan! It’s SUCH a great showcase for her being snarky and sassy and with the quick comebacks!

ETA Sorry for all the edits lol, I was attempting to embed a VM video, but LJ refuses to cooperate. This is the direct link anyway :P

I'm sadly not feeling the same thrill tbh, just because I don't really see the need for this... ?? I didn't have strong love feelings for the movie, but it was a good place to leave off (nothing unresolved), so this reboot seems to me pretty surplus.

Will still watch though, lol.

Hmm I didn’t feel that it was all that resolved, it ends with getting Veronica back in place as a PI and vowing to fight Neptune's corruption, so it felt like just the beginning of the story to me

Hmm I do remember Rob Thomas saying that with the movie they originally had an idea for a Veronica mystery that didn’t really use most of the rest of the cast, but then they ultimately decided that they needed to include everyone that time around as it was what the fans would want, so I can see the return of old favourites being cut back a bit this time if he decides to go with a different idea. I hope that he would still consider having most of the actors back though, it wouldn’t really be the same without them, and it’s like it would feel forced or anything as Wallace is the high school coach, Mac is working with Veronica, and Weevil and Keith are both still living in town, so it should just be a natural thing to work all of those characters into it

Huh -- well that IS a surprise alright. I assume that because both shows run small seasons she's going to be fitting that into filming The Good Place? Because I'd sure hate to see that going away.

The article mentions that it won’t be an issue with TGP thankfully! Presumedly they should finish filming that by the end of 2018, it’s only 13 half hour episodes after all, so that gives them quite a few months to film VM in the first half of 2019, although I’m not sure how soon exactly the plan is for VM

I’m a little bit nervous as well definitely, I hope they produce something that will really live up to the legacy of the original series, but my hopes are pretty high at the moment that Rob and Kristen are going to make sure it’s work that they’re proud of

This is what the vague VM mentions I've seen over the last few days was about! YAY! Now to figure out if hulu lets you do a month/makes it easy to cancel subscriptions....

I’ve seen VM fans talking about that, and apparently you can very easily just subscribe to Hulu for one month to binge watch all the episodes. I do wish that it could be on Netflix instead though, it’s annoying how inaccessible Hulu is in comparison, I’m still waiting for them to make it available in the U.K. :(

I'd say I'm surprised, but I'm not really that surprised given the reception the movie got. Did take a lot longer than I expected, and didn't peg Hulu as the one to pick it up since I always forget they're still around.

That said, revivals seem to be hit or miss now- X Files being a stellar example of things that can fall flat on their face.

Same, it’s always a delightful surprise when you first hear the news, but part of me was also expecting them to do more eventually just based on what Rob and Kristen have said. Kristin especially was so passionate about always being up for playing Veronica, and she frequently talked about them not wanting the fans to be the ones asked to fund it for a second time, but how they planned to to do it differently with the next revival of VM. So it seemed pretty concrete that we would get more eventually. I was hoping for Netflix over Hulu though!
