This I don't understand the point of... Like, what does this remake add, that the original didn't have? The dancing in the original is still a classic, there isn't really much in the old movie that is dated to the point, that you can't just watch the original. So what's the point of remaking it?
I mean, I'm not entirely against remakes, esp. in sci fi and fantasy movies, the effects we can do today are just way beyond what was possible in the past.
But Dirty Dancing? And they kept the cast white? Why even bother?
Yep, if they had introduced a different twist then that would be something at least, but there's zero point if they're just doing an exact remake of the original story
I'll never understand why remakes continue to happen, especially if it's from something that's already successful on its own. If it enhances and adds something new to the story, that's fine, but just a remake for remakes sake? Most of those never go over well, and are usually seen as cashing in on the success of the original. It's why people say the industry is running out of fresh ideas and scared of trying something new.
Exactly, this just look it's going to be lifting scenes directly from the original, and at least they could have a fresh take on it, otherwise what's the point?
I did watch an interview on youtube tonight that said the remake is going to add to the original. Apparently it's supposed to show what happened to Johnny and Baby afterwards. Mind you, that doesn't make it any more appealing in my book.
Yeah ending it on the climatic dance scene was the perfect movie ending, I don't really see the point of flash-forwarding six months or whatever to confirm that Johnny and Baby did make it work, imo they only added that so that they could claim that it does offer something more than the original
I mean to be shallow, they didn't even hire someone that was particularly cute! Johnny was meant to be swoonworthy gorgeous to Baby when she first sees him, and this guy...just isn't
(I have to say I downloaded the Promo "Cover" pic on my phone to show on my next convention, though, because i feel like that one looks a bit less "staged" than the one with Patrick and Jennifer, but that's all I will use it for, really...)
Doesn't it look bad! It's lifting the scenes, the songs, basically everything directly from the original judging by the promo, and literally who asked for this!
I have absolutely no interest in watching this. To me any sort of remake of such a classic and iconic movie is an insult to Patrick's memory. He can't ever be copied or replaced.
So many movies and tv shows that I absolutely adore have had remakes-- Point Break, Miami Vice, 21 Jump Street, and I refuse to watch any of them. Give me the originals any day.
I totally agree, a reinterpretation of the story is one thing, but don't just do a straight remake of the entire thing, giving all of Patrick's lines to another actor
Remaking a classic is never a good idea. When has that ever ended well?
The only good thing I can see in these pictures/trailer is that the new female lead seems to be of normal human proportions and not an unhealthy stick insect. That's something, I guess.
She has a nice figure, but she doesn't come across as having a dancers grace to me at all. I mean I know I shouldn't rush to snap judgements just based on the trailer and a few pics, but in the pic from the lake for example she's just kind of hanging there and not even pointing her toes. The comparison to the original is incredibly jarring to me http://www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/0/dirty-dancing-remake-see-famous-lake-lift-recreated/
I'm probably being way too picky here lol, obviously Baby was never a trained dancer, but I always thought the point was that Johnny noticed that she did have some natural ability and that she could move, whereas everything about the remake just looks incredibly awkward and unpoised. It's not the best idea for them to lift lines and scenes directly from the original IMO, because that's just inviting people to notice those differences and feel like the new version doesn't compare
I noticed that in the lake still, too, lol. Not very graceful at all.
I just thought they'd picked a dancer more than they picked a typical actress which would explain the figure. I didn't really watch how she moves in the "moving parts" of the trailer. I just assumed she'd be a good dancer. Oh, well.
It especially stands out because the original image is so iconic, and so my first reaction to the similar image from the remake was almost embarrassment at how poorly it comes off in comparison :P I don't think that Jennifer Grey had any background in dance either (I don't think anyway?), but she worked for the character as someone who was at least naturally graceful and could quickly pick up the moves, whereas the new actress doesn't come across as someone who knows what she's doing at all in that respect Idk :shrugs:
