The X-Files' Revived Again for 10 New Episodes at Fox

The truth is still out there, and Fox appears determined to find it. Little more than a year after the brief-but-successful return of The X Files, the network has firmed up plans for another limited revival.

Fox announced Thursday that The X-Files will return for the 2017-18 broadcast season with 10 new episodes. Stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are both signed on to reprise their roles as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Creator and executive producer Chris Carter is on board as well. Fox executives have been vocal in their interest to produce more X-Files since the last year, but scheduling conflicts held up any official renewal.

My show is coming back for a ten episode run!!!! :shaking and crying:

I'm so happy :D :D :D The recent announcement of the audio spin-off made me wonder if we might have to wait a couple more years for another tv series, and they decided on the audio adventures to give us something in the meantime, so I was really not expecting them to anounce that they're filming as early as this summer!

I'm seeiously sooooo happy with this news, I can't stop smiling as I type!!! I'm really hoping that they reunite Mulder and Scully romantically in the new series, AND that they find William :D

I'm tentatively excited. I enjoyed a couple of the revival eps (enough to write two fanfics), but I hated the finale. I don't know how they could avoid dealing with it in the new eps, but I hope they do. Just the conspiracy retcon, I mean. Ugh. I will always be on board though if Mulder and Scully are, and I hope they let them finally just be together. There are plenty of other ways to create tension in the show without pulling them apart. In my opinion, anyway.

I wasn't a big fan of the last two episodes, Babylon and the finale, but I'm hoping that ten episodes will mean that they can make the mythology a little more coherent, the finale rushed it terribly. And the MotW's always bring in a good mixture of voices, I'm hoping that Darin Morgan will be back, and maybe they can even work Vince Gillian in somehow, he was talking about being really disappointed that his schedule didn't work with season 10

And I totally agree, they really didn't need to split them up in season 10, at first I was assuming that they only split them up so that they could have a story arc of them working their way back to one another as a couple, but then they never did that much with it :sighs: We know that they can still keep focused on the case and professional, we didn't even know at the time that they were together in season 7 and making a baby lol, so it doesn't have to be this big sweeping change that CC seems to dread so. Just give fans the occasional sweet moment or kiss at the opening or ending of an episode, it really doesn't take much to keep us happy!

I really wasn't expecting an announcement for them filming this summer! It seemed like scheduling was going to be a problem for a while yet

I'm glad you're excited. :-) I was about the six episodes, but those were kinda weird to me. I was happy it was back, but it wasn't the same. But then sometimes it was exactly the same. Too exactly if that makes sense. So many years had gone by. Maybe if they had found William . . .

I watched five of the six and never saw the last one of those and no one said I was missing anything . . .

Glad you're happy too. I didn't really ship them as lovers but I did want them to end up happy and well, them.

Nah the last episode wasn't great lol, you didn't miss much

And I'm a big shipper, so maybe part of what turned me off Babylon (well among many things!) was that Mulder and Scully hardly got any screentime together, and then the finale gave them practically nothing :( That was a let-down when you've got just six episodes, and most fans are excited for the revival for the chance to see Mulder and Scully working together again. But then CC did the same with the second movie as well, and then tried to blame it flopping on Mulder and Scully being a romantic item and losing their sexual tension :deep sigh:

I did too, the only episodes I weren't crazy about were the last two. Well I guess that is a lot when you're talking about a six episode season lol, but still I *loved* the werewolf episode, and I enjoyed the premiere and the other motw episodes enough that I'm definitely excited for more.

I think also that having ten episodes is going to make a big difference, it felt like CC didn't know how to pace the mythology when they had such a limited run last time, but ten episodes feels a lot more like a proper season

The last two are the only ones I haven't seen. Mostly basing my opinion on adoring the werewolf one - that alone was worth the revival. I actually really disliked the first ep.

Yeah, I think having more episodes should hopefully help.

Yep, ten episodes give us the chance to get a bigger selection of different MotW episodes, so there's bound to be a few different episodes that everyone really loves, whereas everything felt a bit crammed in there for season 10

I was so excited about the idea of the first revival but then the episodes left me kind of lukewarm, so I'm happy that we're getting more TXF but I'm not expecting to be blown away by the actual episodes.

I'd say that Babylon was the only episode that I absolutely hated. Well and of course the finale was a bit of a mess too, but I really enjoyed the first three episodes. Actually I've noticed that these days the general consensus seems to be that the Darin Morgan episode was the only one worth watching, but on first airing even the premiere saw a huge number of fans being pleasantly surprised and saying that it felt like old times/the critics didn't know what they were talking about. And most fans liked Home Again and Founders Mutation as well at the time, although obviously they weren't absolute classic episodes by any means, but I did think that they were pretty solid cases. Babylon and the finale just seemed to sour the entire revival for a lot of fans unfortunately. For me though there were still enough positives there that I'm very happy to be getting some more episodes. Especially with ten episodes as well, so hopefully there will be a bigger mix of different writers and some great MotW's with Mulder and Scully, I think that we all got a bit burnt out by CC at the end of that run XD

Well, I'm wasn't too "exited" for the last two episodes, and I felt the finale was a bit too rushed- frankly, it would have worked way better if either it had ended sooner or they had made it last two hours. Too many things, and too little time...
well, we'll see how they'll deal with the cliffanger now....

Oh I agree with that, Babylon was just...odd, and it would have been far better to make the finale a two-parter instead and skipped that episode all together. It came across that they didn't really know how to go about making a season of both MotW and mythology episodes when they only had six episodes, whereas I feel like ten gives them the chance to make a proper season of it, so they should be able to plan the mythology out better

Heh yes, I'm not expecting every episode to be perfect by any means, but we're going to be getting Mulder and Scully back, and there will almost certainly be a few good MotW's in the mix when it's not CC writing, and that's enough for me XD

The delicate issue, aka the George Lucas issue, is that Chris Carter is now a terrible writer for his own creation...if Morgan/Wong, Darin Moran or Vince Gilligan write scripts, will be excited for those eps!

Of course worse case scenerio is CC deciding to write more lol, but then he's always used a lot of writers in the past and wanted to get some different voices in there, so I can't see that changing. Ten episodes should give us a nice selection of different MotW's, and I'll be crossing my fingers that they get Vince Gilligan back for at least one

Yeah I dunno, it felt like the revival was promoted as a one-off originally, but I guess that CC was always planning to bring it back as a continuing serial, being that he deliberately left it on a cliffhanger? I'm calling them seasons 10 and 11 at this point, but who knows what the official title is going to be, season 10 was always labelled as "the event series" on the DVDs and promotion..
