I had a feeling that Damon was too angry in the moment to pick up on Jeremy's ring, so I like that the show confirmed that for us in a pretty intense scene with him and Elena. Nice character growth for him there, but no Damon you don't get to take the moral high ground with Elena and her similarities to Katherine, not after you snapped her little brothers neck

Matt is getting seriously tiresome. I would see his point if Caroline was giving HIM a hard point about staying faithful, but all she did was warn off one girl (who very clearly was into Matt), and he completely flies off the handle at her? Not cool. His reaction in the first scene was ridiculously out of proportion, but in the second scene with the flirty girl (can't remember her name :P ) I got the impression that Caroline was deliberately pushing his buttons to end things between them and keep him safe. Kind of sad how easy he was to convince to drop Caroline though :/ He always seems way too focused on pointing out Caroline's insecurities, and I'm really starting to think she could do so much better. If anything I'm starting to note the great chemistry she has with Stefan, although I'm 90% sure the show would never go there. It was so cute how Stefan was on the verge of laughter with her several times, it reminded me a bit of his more light-hearted friendship with Lexie

I liked Bonnie more this week, I thought she worked well as the realist about the vampires, delivering a stern warning to Caroline about what will happen if she does lose control of her urges again. My only real issue is that I would have liked to have seen the actress play it a little more conflicted between wanting to do what she saw as the right thing and wanting to help her friend. Instead Stefan practically had to twist her arm into giving Caroline sunlight access, but it wasn't just a matter of convenience for Caroline. Without a ring she'd start missing school, no longer going out in daylight, and her life would have been endangered once the council picked up on that, so really she needed that ring

I loved the opening montage, the ending of season 5 and opening of season 6 really seem to be going for the nostalgia factor with all those past clips. It wasn't my favourite episode after though, it felt very slow moving up until the scene where Sam returns. I mean yeah I got that they were trying to build tension, but it still dragged a bit for me *shrugs*

I liked the writing of Lisa a lot more in this episode, it was a relief that they finally gave her more of a personality. I would have liked to have seen a bit more of Dean's interaction with Ben though, the kid hardly had a presence and it was kind of odd to see so little of Ben's miniDean attitude after the show pushed it so heavily in the original season 3 episode. I'm glad they'll be sticking around for a few episodes anyway (after not being sure about Lisa's role in the show last season, they sold me on them). Dean's hallucination was nicely creepy too

I'm really disappointed in Sam and Bobby not letting Dean know about Sam's return. It would be different if Sam was just supposed to be dead even, but he was also in hell (which Dean has experienced for himself) and how could they both leave Dean to believe that his brother was agony in hell for an entire year?? Sam seems weirdly detached anyway so I'm not sure what exactly is going on with him, but I'm disappointed in Bobby! The confrontation with Bobby was nicely done though, I really liked how heartbroken Jensen played it.

I'm excited to find out more about what's up with Sam. I'm hoping for an emotional breakthrough with him soon, although doubtless there will not be another hug when it comes, because this season has already used up their yearly quota *eyeroll* (Seriously don't get what is up with the show only allowing two brothers to hug when one of them returns from the dead. There are other appropriate times for them to hug as well, like say when they were starting to reconcile in season 5, but oh well I guess they are just too manly!)

The Campbell cousins didn't make much of an impression on me, and the thought of them all hunting together doesn't really thrill me, so I'm hoping they will be phased out once Dean is ready to get back into the hunting life with Sam again. I hope they won't be hanging around all season anyway. I think they were part of what made me feel a bit alienated from the episode, it almost felt like the entire episode was an extended dream/hallucination of Dean's, although I presume what they were going for was to reboot the show and introduce a lot of new elements now that the apocalypse storyline is over with. It didn't really work for me in this episode, but I'm reserving judgment on how the season will go after this

Nods. They are sweet together, I just hope it ends better than Lexie.

How come Stefan and Lexi have never come across anyone else apart from the tomb vampires/Katherine who have sun-walking items, and yet it's so easy for witches to cook them up? Are we to believe there's no witches outside Virginia? Or is there a total lack of intelligent thinking behind the show?

I assume because witches generally don't want to help vampires/are natural enemies of them (like the warewolfs?)

Katherine was pretty cunning and brilliant so she obviously managed to get Emily on-side in someway, but I'd imagine that it would be harder for most vampires to find a witch willing to do it for them. Bonnie still had to be talked into it, even when Caroline was one of her best friends

That doesn't necessariy work as an explanation, because Damon had a witch as an ex-girlfriend (Bree, acted by the actress who acted Jasmine on Angel). Clearly witches and vampires do get along sometimes. I find it hard to believe the situation in Mystic Falls with vampires and witches allied hasn't been duplicated somewhere else.

Bree liked Damon, but she was still planning to betray him so I never got any indication that she would have trusted him enough to make hm a day-walking ring. I agree that the alliances could have been duplicated in some cases perhaps, but I still don't find it hard to believe that it's still pretty rare

Don't forget that the writers have talked about how Damon is supposed to take after Katherine as he learned everything about being a vampire from her (and they asked Nina to base her Katherine performance on Damon's) so they might both find it a lot easier to charm the witches than say the average tomb vampire. And I don't think Stefan would have got hold of a ring on his own either

["but I still don't find it hard to believe that it's still pretty rare"]

Pretty rare isn't the same as unique.

It's possible Bree wasn't able to make sunlight rings or she might have made one for Lexi. But I find it hard to believe Emily and her family are the only witches out of the whole world or whole USA who can do it. They just haven't been shown to be that unique. They're not Willow at the height of her power.

As for Damon and Katherine's charm, I'm sure there's other vamps as charming.

I haven't seen either of these shows yet this season, but I have all three episodes of Vampire Diaries to watch and I'm looking forward to them.

Reading your review made me kind of angry at Matt! I like Caroline. It sounds as if I will agree with you - I think she could do better.

SPN, I'm waiting on my boyfriend and my best friend's opinion before I bother. Last year disappointed me so much......

Well a lot of Caroline fans on my flist still seem really into Matt/Caroline, so it might just be me *g* I just find his treatment of her pretty condescending I suppose, it feels like he's always focusing on her bad points rather than the good points, and always complaining about her insecurities etc. In the second episode it was kind of weird too how he was making a big deal about Caroline being touchy about the curtains being open in her hospital room. Okay we know the real reason why she was freaking out, but it could have just as easily been sensitivity to light after the head trauma of her recent car accident, yet his reactions always seem so *put upon sigh* my girlfriend is acting like a crazy freak, instead of worrying if she is okay and asking why the light is bothering her

They were incredibly cute for a few episodes when they were first bonding in the bar/bonding over junk food/kissing after the dance, but I haven't really cared for Matt's attitude much sense. This season he tells Caroline that he loves her at end end of episode 2, then the very next episode sees him end things because of Caroline warning off a girl who was blatantly flirting with him. Same as season 1 when the double date see him and Elena get very nostalgic together and instead of them dealing with it as equals (Matt acknowledging that he did get a bit carried away with nostalgia, Caroline acknowledging that she needs to get over her insecurities with Elena) it always seems to end up with Caroline's feelings being dismissed in a really condescending way

And I wasn't a big fan of season 5 of SPN because of the horrendous pacing, but I'm hoping it will play better for me on DVD as there were episodes I really liked. A lot of people have pointed out the premiere was supposed to be deliberately off-kilter because of both Dean and Sam bonding with their new families, so I'm hoping the show is going somewhere with it. But I must admit that I didn't find it the most exciting episode

(Hello!)

I'm waiting a little bit to see more of SPN before making more of an opinion on it.

But I do like Lisa. I liked her a hell of a lot in this episode. They did very well setting up that Lisa knew of Dean's world, enough to ask him about it and trust him when he asked her to take Ben out. Very much an adult relationship. I enjoyed it.

I just can't make out much of anything else. We'll see though!

Hey :waves:

I wasn't so impressed with Lisa suddenly being introduced last season because it came across as typical SPN to just produce this mother for Dean to turn too, with no discernible personality, who was happy to open her doors to him out of the blue, but she definitely did come across a lot better here. I loved their talk on the staircase

I know *sighs* I just feel like this show is basically build around the triangle with the main three, plus they have Katherine around now as well to mess with the brothers, so it would end up taking away a huge chunk of story if Stefan ended up paired with Caroline. (Ditto Damon/Bonnie which a lot of people seem to ship). So I suspect the show is always going to have Elena as the only one for Damon and Stefan

I am hoping for lots of good friendship scenes for them now that Caroline is a vampire though. If things get messed up with Katherine then she's going to need someone to turn too who understands
