It doesn't sound like we will be able to access the stuff I am actually interesting in watching, probably the home video's that people make of themselves is all that will play for us :/

Yup. Basically we're screwed if we want to watch fan made vids or music vids or anything that is actually interesting. Great!

I hate it when certain sites are blocked for certain countries. You can still access them, but you'll need proxies and stuff, and that's always so annoying.

So much for the free accesible internet. *rolls eyes*

Do you know about the three-strike policy?

ISPs in countries such as New Zealand are pushing back against "graduated response" policies that would create a three strikes and you're out policy terminating subscribers based on unproven allegations of copyright infringement...Quebecor argues in favour of certain instances of ISPs controlling content, including anti-spam or child pornography blocking. Moreover, it suggests that copyright policies that build upon the graduated response policies in other countries should be added to the list of content controls that benefit society.
The nastiness in this is that all of the smaller ISPs either run on Quebecor's infrastructure or Bell's, and Bell throttles the speed. Bell does this with every ISP that runs on their infrastructure too.

Are they going to block youtube entirely? I can't imagine how hard is for those who are going to put the lock in the connections. How are they going to know?

Wow! That sucks. :(

It sounds like they're planning to do that "this video is not available in your country" annoyance for any video featuring music :/

Duh, YouTube, THE evil. And this, this sucks, big time.

But, I hate YT anyway, for all that it is, and this is part of the reason why.

I don`t post my Videos at YT, and now I`m reminded why not.

But at the same time with plunging CD sales, the labels hope that YouTube, which benefits from millions of visitors seeking music videos, will serve both as a promotional outlet and a key revenue source.

It's been a long standing rule that companies usually pay for commercials and advertisments to promote their products. YouTube is promoting the RIAA's product for NOTHING! The majority of companies in the world would kill for that kind of promotion but no, not the RIAA. They want YouTube to pay them to promote their own artists. I understand copyright and all that but the RIAA couldn't have dreamed up a better advertising tool than YouTube. The RIAA should be kissing Google's feet and begging to have all their artists videos uploaded there.

Instead what do they do? They try to extort as much money as they possibly can from Google until it's just not viable for Google to continue to pay for promoting the artists that are signed to the record labels. It's completely ludicrous. Only the RIAA could possibly be so greedy as to shoot themselves in their own foot and take even more away from their own bottom line.

The most horrible part of this is that now, music fans can no longer go to YouTube to see that new artist they heard about, and that hurts the fan and the artist. If only the artists could sue the damn RIAA for hurting their ability to promote themselves.

I can't wait for the RIAA to fall....

It's even stupider that it's such a big deal to *watch* music video's for free online. I mean downloading obviously hurts them saleswise, but the premium video's are ones the record companies themselves upload, and are free promotion for them!

If people can't stream the songs on YouTube, aren't they more likely to try downloading them instead? And by d/l they're gonna get the actual files to listen too, and be less likely to buy the CDs.

Hopefully it won't be as bad as I feared. I think it's mainly going the hit the premium video's which the record companies themselves upload, so if anything it's more of a loss to the recording artist than it is to the consumer. They're the ones who will lose out on free promotion because of their own greed

So far I can still view fan music video's at least *crosses fingers that will continue*

Sounds like it's not YouTube's fault, but the PRS' if it is true that the latter is demanding a prohibitively high increase in licensing fees. It is a business after all and YouTube has to do what's best for them. I wonder though whether this move is an attempt to force the PRS to reduce their demand. One can only hope that it is.
