My Oz DVDs arrive!!! Season 3 has Keller holding Beecher after the stabbing for the back cover, season 4 has B/K fighting on the back cover, and season 6 has their confrontation over the parole for the picture *happy*

I've already watched some special features, they have the original audition tapes, and both Adebesi and Said have English accents in RL *surprised* And Kathy Bates directed the wrestling of Beecher and Keller in season 2, with the shirts coming off in slow motion :P I did not know that before!


And okay, question. How come people like Keene and Cyril got the death penalty, and Adebesi cuts off someone's head, yet doesn't end up on death row too? But I suppose that, in some ways, the death penalty would be the better option over some of the prisoners being held in solitary for the rest of their life. That thought *really* depresses me :/


And I forgot how annoying McManus was! I hate hate hate how he acts all concerned for the prisoners, yet when Beecher gets out of the hole he's all "I know" when Beecher says that Schillinger had been raping him. Why the hell did McManus put Beecher in with Adebesi and Schillinger in the first place, when Beecher could have shared his pod with someone nicer like Ryan. (Well er relatively nice that is, but at least Ryan wasn't sadistic like those other two, and would have left Beecher alone!)

Watching season 1 classic Ryan (so weird to think that every death in season 1 traces back to him in some way!), I'm undecided about how I feel with where they took his character later on. I can understand why they wanted to introduce a younger brother to show that Ryan was capable of looking out for someone in his life, but they made Cyril...so annoying at times.

And Alvarez talking about pray for my baby, has to be the saddest scene from season 1 *sniffs* I love him! I think he's actually replaced Ryan as sexiest inmate for me. Beecher isn't as sexy as I remembered unfortunately, and then he will get all hairy in season 2 :/ I think he gets hot for me around the time that he shaves the beard off for the kiss with Keller. And season 4 Beecher I also have happy memories of :D

Huh. I always thought that Alvarez was one of the hottest characters but no one ever agreed with me. Maybe it was the shit-smearing thing that ruled him out in everyone's mind.

It happens IRL too. People with better lawyers get life, or even shorter sentences. People with public defenders (i.e., poor people or people who aren't great at advocating for themselves) get death.

I find watching Oz actors in other roles completely jarring, even now. Especially Schillinger as the M&M. ;)

Nah, Alvarez is totally hot. I almost died when he taught Julie the dog to understand Spanish.

Plus, Kirk Acevedo is probably one of the best actors on the show, which always ups the hotness for me.

:nods: And ooh talking of Spanish, one thing that does disappoint me about the DVDs is that the subtitles were Spanish only. I find some of the accents hard to understand at times, so I'd have loved to have subtitles to put on :/

Also I got quite excited at the mention of featurette, and pictured interviews with a lot of the actors, but it seemed more like a trailer promoting the season...

I think he's really hot, and the show seems to present it that way too with Alvarez talking about how he was the best-looking guy in his hood. His voice is just pure sex too. When he was saying "ain't listening to gossip a sin" I had to rewind the DVD several times just to drool :P


I haven't seen many of the Oz actors in other stuff actually. Although I did see Schillinger playing a guy on Nip/Tuck who get breasts surgically added to him! Hee, an actor with great comic timing

Damn, I need to rewatch Oz again. I'm definitely a Ryan fangirl, but I agree with you on his character. I think they could have done a lot more, particularly with the Ryan/Gloria plot line. I would have liked to have seen more of lovesick crazy stalker Ryan, before she reciprocated, you know? As for Cyril...yeah, Scott William Winters played that way over-the-top.

And yeah, McManus sucks.

Oh, and I don't know if you've watched season 6 yet, but my FAVORITE Oz inmate, Alonzo Torquemada, shows up in a couple of episodes. LOVE HIM. Bobby Cannavale makes me swoon.

Me too! I have seen most of the series at some time or another, but it's been a while, so I'm just catching up on DVD again now :D

Alvarez's ending did seem really depressing as he just gave up. Actually when watching season 1, and Alvarez saying that he doesn't want to end up like his grandfather, just rotting away, but doesn't see it going down any other way, that depressingly reminded me of the season 6 parole officer talking of coming back every year to see how much Alvarez has ripened until he rots :/

But I also loved Torquemada! "you're so fucking hot", "I like straight boys best". And that's a subplot that I'm disappointed came right at the end. I'd be interested in fan fic exploring that, and maybe making it a little less depressing.

Oh Ryan is one of my favourite characters, but Alvarez has overtaken him in the hotess for me *g* I can see why they introduced Cyril, you can kind of tell which characters were meant to be the straight-out villians with nothing to redeemn them (Shillinger, Adebesi), and which were supposed to be a little bit more accessible. So even though Ryan obviously was pretty damn evil at times (loved him teaming up with Adebesi in season 1, and Said warning them both that he has the weak heart, they have the bad heart), they obviously tried to humanise him later on with Cyril, with the Gloria subplot, and then later with the family stories.

Heh, yeah I think the only time I actually liked him was when Said was asking for help, and McManus saaid that you always ask me for favours, and never do anything in return. And then just starts enjoying his sandwich as Said appeals for a favour. That cracked me up :P

I didn't mind Cyril, though I guess I could see how he could get annoying. McManus didn't bother me either. The death penalty can get thrown around rather carelessly in real life. It was bloody idiotic Cyril getting it and Keane was just defending himself.
