Let go of the woobie is worth a read. It references Lex a lot, as well as Spike, Brian from QAF, Logan, and Draco. I loved this

the writers instead chose to highlight his wicked ways by suddenly revealing halfway through season four that Lex... had one night stands! With several different women! And he gave them diamond earrings afterwards! Send some of that evil my way, why don't you? Clark's pissy reaction to the news that his single, adult friend had sex was hilarious, mostly because he came off as jealous rather than indignant.

And lol does anyone know where Big Dumb Alien originated? Isn't it usually used as a term of affection? Well except in season 3, when Clark shoves Lex aside and Omar recaps it as something like, "Watch out. Big Dumb Alien coming through" *giggles*

I think the writers lost the hope of making Lex unlikeably evil when they had his daddy strap him down and electrocute him. Also I think the writers have deliberately given half the Lex-evil story to Lionel because it makes for a better story.

My brother theorised that the writers *know* Clarke is coming across as a complete shit and are doing it on purpose to show the personality sacrifices needed to become a superhero.

The article is wrong about Draco, though. After five books of being a complete little sod, he finally lived up to some of the fans' hopes by bursting into tears before a big confrontation and being reluctant to kill people. It was almost certainly out of cowardice, but it did give his fans a little something to work with.

It sounds like the author is reluctant to reform him now, in case it sends out the message that bad boys can change

You're probably right, but the alternative is more disturbing -- that no one is actually capable of changing for the better.

*sniffs* Poor little woobie...

Oooh you know what would have been cool? After Asylum, the asylum stay was only refered to in terms of Lex needing to put his dad away.

But the end of Asylum was pretty chilling with the slightly lobotomized Lex we got. And it was weird that the ECT would take away exactly the right memories, and nothing else. If Lex had huge holes in his brain from then on, like say if Clark brings up Helen, and Lex just stares at him blankly. They didn't really do much with consequences of what the ECT did to him though.

LOL! That would be cool.

He seems to have forgotten all about Lucas. And about those guys who wear uniforms like cops, but you can hire them and they like keep people from barging into your house and hitting you in the head and kidnapping you and stuff. What are those called again?

That's not from the ECT, that's from all the concussions :p

It would be a good plot for the ECT to have messed with his memory. I don't expect too much from 'Smallville', because they have about two bad episodes for every good one, but I think they knew what they were doing when they made him so sympathetic. Whether it's right or not, Lex can only look good in comparison to his father.

During the season 3 controversy with "Clark the asshat" and "Lex the woobie" my Clark friend was really upset after Memoria and ranting on she doesn't know why the writers are doing this. They made Lex so much the sympathetic hero of the story there.

Even JS has said that they are great at writing Lex's journey, but are failing at Clark's. And he made those comments during season 3. Of course season 4 didn't do many favours for Lex's character either

I can't believe they don't notice how rude Clark is. They're good at a lot of other things, so they surely can't belive that the way he accuses Lex of murder and then takes his money is admirable. Possibly they have the idea that he's the Designated Hero and therefore everything he does always looks right.

I'm more okay with Clark this season. But honestly in season 3, they were very often having Clark accuse Lex of things that he hadn't done. And then Clark carrying on like a petulant child and never offering Lex an apology.

I saw a parallel betwen seasons 3 and 5, with Cyborg seeing a Lex that is guilty of the accusations. And he pleaded innocence and convinced Clark he was telling the truth, in exactly the same way he did in season 3 when he actually was. I think Cyborg has several reminders of the past clex interaction, and it does make you think about what came first. The accusations, or Lex living down to everyone elses image of him.

I'm not making excuses for Lex, just. Well thinking back in season 1, Lex wanted to prove himself to the town of Smallville. He constantly reached out to Jonathon Kent, wanting to try and change his impression of Lex. Time and time again Jonathon slaps him back, by the time of season 2 Lionel is mocking Lex and pointing out he will never be accpeted by the Kent's, and just accept his own nature. Which is, when it comes down to it, the same lesson Jonathon has ben giving Lex. By the time of season 3, post-Asylum, there is barely any Lex/Kent interaction. Lex has given up there. He is still trying to impress Clark, but more and more Clark isn't buying that Lex has good intentions. I think that does make a difference. If neither of your father figures believe in you for a start, ot keep giving you second chances (Vortex, Obscura, Prodigal), only to jerk you around later. If your friend starts constantly accusing you of being some scumbag.

I know when my family are screaming at me for things I haven't done, it really doesn't give me the incentive to be a better person for them. Usually it just makes me angry, and to not want to try. And Lex does keep trying, however half-heartedly, for a long time. And that's when literally everyone is smacking him down, and even his friends aren't in his corner.

Even now, Clark doesn't say make comments about Lex is better than the experiments, or doing so and so would be a wrong thing to do. He just basically tells Lex "you are a bad person". There really aren't a lot of places to go from there, but down. And maybe Clark is too young to handle this well, so we should sympathise. But he appointed himself as Lex's moralising teacher. He was "self-righteous" enough if you like, to think that was the job for him. Instead of just trying to be Lex's friend. And ultimately IMO he botched it.
