But I did copy and paste this bit because I thought it was worth repeating:
I am tired of hearing that the internet fans aren't representative of general fandom. Like with Smallville apparently it's only the ugly on-line fans who hate Lana. It's 2004, practically everyone in their teens and early 20s are on-line, and that's Smallvilles main audience. When I first came on-line a few years back I didn't know what words like lol meant, and neither did some other people, so we were gradually learning about internet speak. But think back over the past year or so, how many people are new to the internet and don't recognize what :) or LMAO mean? You hardly ever hear questions like that any more.
Pretty much all Smallville viewers will have access to the computer. Same with Buffy. Internet fandom is not some seperate beast from general television audiences, so the PTB need to stop dismissing the opinions of those wacky internet fans.

The Bad - there are you-r-juz-jellus-coz-she-iz-pretty younglings.
The Ugly - Of the latter, one of them ain't so young, but with a mentality that could underperform another youngling.

Date: 2004-08-15 06:39 pm (UTC)And I'd agree that the 'internet fandom' could be the biggest asset to a network/production company. I mean, how many dvd box sets are sold on amazon.com every year? If I didn't have the net, I probably would never know about all the conventions that I'm able to attend. Those things are big money makers(ok, conventions more so for actors, but still good publicity for shows). They owe a lot to the 'net fandoms' and they should start realizing that.

Dru: Ooh. I'm still lagging.
Just the way she says that never fails to crack me up.
Guess I'll edit the right date in lol.
And it's not even about owing internet fans. I just don't get why I am always hearing that TPTB think the internet audience is separate from their main audience. Because chances are with shows like Buffy and Smallville a huge majority of the audience is on-line. So yes you totally should be using the internet to gage fan opinions, instead of dismissing us as just the net fans, not the general audience.

Date: 2004-08-15 10:56 pm (UTC)See from what A&M say I think they're not just about casual fans, they do want Smallville to appeal to Superman fans and for people to geuinely enjoy watching the show and call themselves fans and buy thr DVDs. They want to appeal to that section of the audience, they just seem to have blinders on when it comes to internet responses being most of the the actual fans of the show, giving their opinions. Internet fans are not the minority, not any more.
I get the impression that the Smallville crew do honestly believe that the Lana hate is just an internet phenomenon and is not that big a deal. It baffles me when they imply that there's hard-core Lana fans watching Smallville, they're just not on-line.

Date: 2004-08-17 04:37 am (UTC)This made me smile. While I've been online for a long time, I am new to message boards and journals. I remember the first time seeing the word 'manip' and it took me a little while to figure out that that was. So... what does OTP mean? I know it's a slash thing. I just can't figure it out.
PS: Spellcheck does not like: LMAO, online, manip or OTP. hmmmm they need to upgrade their checker.
