#LJ20

I’ve been here for 16 years now, I joined in December 2003 right after you no longer needed invite codes to join, and here I am still all these years later.... I first discovered LJ through TWoP of all places, all of the links on the Smallville forum fan fic thread were to LJ and there seemed to be a thriving fandom community here, so I joined to keep up with the fan fic just as soon as it was possible for anyone to start a LJ. My original name was spuffyandclex lol, but I paid for a name change after a few years for obvious reasons *g* Some of my happiest online times have been on LJ, and it’s been the best site to really get to know people and make friends, even if it sadly isn’t as active now as it once was. What first drew other people to LJ?

And here’s to another 20 years 🥂 As long as LJ is still here, I will be here

I'm actually impressed that LJ is still going (strong?). I wouldn't mind if it stuck around ;)
My reason for joining was also fandom related. Someone reported the majority of my wallpapers/graphics on deviantart, so I decided to find another place for sharing these kinds of fanworks and found LJ (through deviantart I think). That's how I got into making icons and it's still the reason why I won't leave, even though DW has icon communities now.

I know it’s died down a LOT compared to what it once was, but yeah I think it’s impressive how many users are still active. Some people on other sites acts like it’s a dying wasteland over here, but it’s never been abandoned to the extent that say MySpace was, it’s just no longer ~the~ place to be online in the way that it once was

I joined September 2003 - and you still needed an invitation code back then which I remember had been incredibly difficult to get. LOL Hard to believe I am been on here for this long ... basically my entire adult life is chronicled in my journal.

Anyway, here’s to those of us who are still around! 🥂

I definitely remember that you either had to pay to join, or get an invite code, and I didn’t really know anyone who could give me one of those, so I was so excited when they finally made it open to everyone

It is hard to believe sometimes that I’m still here, but with how fast social media goes these days and how in-personal everything is, it’s kind of nice to have a slower and comfy place like LJ. With online forums, tumblr, and reddit, it feel like my comments are getting lost in the void, whereas this really feels like an online home where people actually recognise my name and know me as a person to talk too

I joined in 2011 to participate in a fandom fest. I had DW from 2009 and posted mainly there. Around 2015 I started crossposting and got LJ friends and it is a great place to go to now for me. I feel I met really great people here.

I do miss the days when fandom was really active here *sighs* There were so many thriving fandom communities in its heyday

It's a place where you can have a conversation - nothing compares IMO. I like it and I'm staying :)

Yep, I know that a lot of people left for Facebook, but it’s absolutely not the same to me. I like that we can write lengthy entries on LJ, as well as take more time reading others LJ’s, as opposed to how fast your feed flies by on other social media sites with no one taking any of it in

Whoa, those are some seriously impressive numbers in your graphic!

I hope LJ can keep going. I've tried other social media sites and could never connect with them the way I do to LJ. Or maybe I'm just getting old and stubborn. Heh.

Wow... 20 years is a long time... I do hope LJ will live on for a long time... :) I am definitely not going anywhere... =D

I definitely know I came here via a Queer as folk discussion forum when everyone from there joined LJ. Must have been around 2006 or something like that =D

Aww yeah I remember posting on message boards for tv shows and everyone would have links to their LJ’s so that we could find one another, LJ was such a big thing at one point that it seemed like most people online had one

I joined LJ early in 2003 (when invite codes were still going on). I mostly joined out of curiosity, but also due to the fandom communities which I had lurked briefly before officially joining the site. BTVS and HP were the biggest fandoms at that time, with BTVS having just ended. LJ was the first online community I ever joined.

I was definitely lurking a lot at the beginning, I was really into Smallville fandom at that time and mostly just lurking to keep track of the fan fic. I think that I got involved with Buffy LJ fandom shortly afterwards, I remember on Buffy fanboards we would have a thread so that we could all provide a link to our LJ’s and find one another. Crazy times!

I, honestly, don't really remember why I came to LJ. I think it was either searching for something on Google, like a fandom site or something, and that lead me here or it was mentioned on another board I was at.

I joined LJ in 2004, due to fandom. I was obsessed with General Hospital. Before LJ I was on message boards, I think I learned about LJ from people on the message boards. I loved collecting icons, reading fanfic, making new friends. I changed journals because I was young and didn't have the funds for a name change, my original username was iloveric224, lol. Although LJ has died down a bit, I still love it here. I like having somewhere to write about my life so I can look back on it all, and I enjoy reading about other's lives too.

I used to love collecting icons as well! It’s a shame how much that has died down since, I guess most people in the graphics community moved on to making gifs instead? Not to be a snob lol, but the icons provided on tumblr always seem so basic to me, they’re basically just simple screencaps shrunk down a bit, whereas ~back in the day~ there were absolutely gorgeous icons being produced. There are still some amazing icon makers around of course, but nothing compared to how big that community used to be

And same with loving LJ for fan fic too, but I suppose that at least in that case we have a decent alternative set up with Archive Of Our Own

I agree! There are still some great ones, but there used to be icon communities and makers everywhere on LJ! Seems a lot of those people either stopped making icons or left LJ entirely. =/

I guess because you can only have one user pic on tumblr and on message boards, so the popularity of it died down a bit after people moved away from LJ? Icons really are perfect for this site when you can have such a huge selection for expressing yourself with, whereas you’re more limited on other platforms

Yep, it used to be that you either had to get an invite code from someone already on LJ, or you had to pay I think it was $5 to open your own LJ. Dreamwidth had the same system with invite codes when they first opened as well
