Date: 2019-04-04 09:14 am (UTC)I tend to be much more into revivals than straightup reboots, I love things like the Veronica Mars revival where you bring the original cast back and catch up with their lives today, rather than reboots. Although La Femme Nikita was rebooted and I love both versions very much, so it’s not something that I’m not open too if it’s done well, but generally it’s hard to picture in advance a show that you want to be rebooted after you’re already fallen in love with an actor in the role
9. I’m not sure that there is a show that I’ve flat out hated after once loving it. I had my moments of anger at Gossip Girl, Smallville, Pretty Little Liars, but I still re-watch those shows, so I wouldn’t say that I hate them overall, more just some of the storytelling choices that were made
What makes me stop watching is usually when I become indifferent or bored. I did stop watching Torchwood because they killed off three members of the main cast, and after that I just had no interest in continuing to watch after two of my favourites were dead. One character who was killed I didn’t like anyway lol, but the other two were kind of a dealbreaker for me
41. Honestly Buffy! I would make a shockingly terrible Buffy, but it would be a dream fantasy where I could just do my spin kicks and beat up vampires
(no subject)
Date: 2019-04-04 09:31 am (UTC)ETA Oh and also Dollhouse. That feels like a misunderstood show to me, and one of Joss’s most underrated offerings. It often seems like it’s taken for granted that it’s a show that’s seen as a giant failure, but actually it’s my second favourite show of his after Buffy
11. I started watching Life On Mars after I fell in love with John Simm on Doctor Who when he was playing the Master, and yes LOM was a great find. I want through a brief phrase of seeking out John Simm films to watch as well, but these days I probably wouldn’t bother watching a tv show or film just for one specific actor tbh. There’s so much content out there to watch that I’m only going to check something out if the concept interests me. LOM was a nice surprise though, and also led to me watching and falling in love with the Ashes To Ashes spin-off as well
31. From this year True Detective has been my favourite new show by far, I really fell in love with that one. And from last year I really enjoyed Sex Education, The Haunting Of Hill House, Killing Eve, Sharp Objects, and Peaky Blinders. I’m cheating with six lol, but well those are the recent shows that I loved the most XD
42. Absolutely!! I’m starting to get out of the habit now though, and tending to either just stream shows, or buy them digitally. You keep hearing about physical media being a dying medium, and I’ve noticed that there’s much less effort now to include extra features on DVDs and Blu-Rays, so it’s become a case lately of you may as well just buy the episodes on iTunes. I did have a bit of an addiction to buying DVDs for a while there though, and I still have a lot of special and exclusive editions when companies do put them out, although again that is getting rarer, even with complete collections there rarely seems to be an effort any more to add something extra to entice us to buy all of the episodes again :(

Date: 2019-04-04 11:39 am (UTC)LOM was great!
There’s so much content out there to watch that I’m only going to check something out if the concept interests me.
That's so true. I wanted to try out Conviction because it had Hayley Atwell and some other actors I like, but even that wasn't enough when the concept didn't sound interesting and it was received rather poorly.
It's good to see I'm not the only one who still wants to buy shows on DVD/blu ray! Personally, I'm satisfied with a handful of deleted scenes and a gag reel, but even that is getting rarer. I love NBC for putting up The Good Place's gag reel up on youtube.
(no subject)
Date: 2019-04-04 12:06 pm (UTC)I think The Good Place does offer a commentary at least though, as well as a gag reel, but they are becoming much scarcer as more and more people turn to streaming instead. It seems like it’s more just films these days that still offer a lot of extras, but it’s no longer really the norm with tv shows unless the people involved themselves want to make a big effort with it?
Older shows like Supernatural do still go all out because I guess by now they’re just used to making sure there’s extra content available for the fans, but then a new show like Daredevil will offer zero extras, so tbh I still don’t entirely get why people even bother with buying the Blu-Ray. I was really excited to go behind the scenes with the stunts and everything else, but as it is, you may as well just stick to watching the show on Netflix, because it’s not like the physical media offers anything different :shrugs:
And yes that does sadly seem to be the case with Nikita and the CW, but then other shows have still very much taken off on that network and found their niche, so it’s still somewhat puzzling to me how little Nikita gets talked about. I guess maybe it’s partly a case of it being promoted badly?

Date: 2019-04-04 12:17 pm (UTC)okay... 16, 17, 43
and yes... I'll probably snag this. ;o)

Date: 2019-04-04 12:43 pm (UTC)I also want to watch Roswell, Legacies, and The Perfectionists if they get added anywhere. Oh and Pose, True Blood, Hart Of Dixie, The Conners, and Bates Motel. So yes, just a few shows there :P There really are so many shows that it can feel quite overwhelming at times, so I usually end up constantly shelving the shows that are 22 episodes or more as they feel like such a big commitment, instead I just end up watching the shorter seasons of 12 episodes or less (usually on Netflix) that are easily bingeable
17. I would say Netflix, they always seems to be adding new shows that really catch on and get everyone talking, whereas I tend to keep Prime more for their back catalogue of shows, most of their originals seem really obscure. I do love The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel, but that’s been about it so far. I was actually excited for Hanna, but then I found the first episode a bit slow and couldn’t really get into it. And most of their other originals don’t appeal to me at all, a lot of them seem really crime and action originated which meh, although I might check out the Dark Tower series when it gets made (kind of disappointing casting though...)
And with Hulu I’m a big fan of The Handmaids Tale, but otherwise I can’t think of much, although obviously I don’t get access to all of their offerings probably as here in the U.K. we have to wait for it to be picked up by another streaming service or channel. I did watch the first two episodes of The Runaways (included on Prime here) and it was okay, but I didn’t get that much out of it. I don’t mean this to sound dismissive to those that do enjoy the show, so I hope it’s not taken that way, buuuut if I’m completely honest I think it’s a show that I would have enjoyed more when I was younger. As it is, I found it a little bit hard to connect with at my advanced age. Sometimes shows with younger characters do really click with me still, but that wasn’t really one of them tbh
43. Well this is kind of a sad sack answer, but I don’t currently have any friends to watch tv with :P When I was younger I did try and introduce a friend to Farscape (the premiere and Won’t Get Fooled Again) and Angel (Faith two-parter from the first season), and I got the impression that she wasn’t that into them as she never asked to see any more at least. In hindsight they probably weren’t the best episodes to start out with idk
Also introduced my sister to Buffy with Surprise/Innocence and that went much better, I watched a lot more episodes with her after that on my old VHS collection. I find it a bit distracting watching tv with other people though I guess, because if they’re a newcomer to a show then I’m always very aware of their reactions and whether or not they’re enjoying it, and I’ve never actually sat down with fellow fans to watch a tv series together that we both enjoy

Date: 2019-04-04 05:27 pm (UTC)For me, there's actually another problem: Not every physical release is available in Germany. Awesome, right? I recently ordered The Americans in the UK because the complete set is not available here. The Good Place S1 and S2 aired here, but the DVDs you can buy on Amazon are (UK) imports.
I suspect the same thing about Supernatural lol
The fans are used to getting all these extras and I'm pretty sure the DVDs and blu-rays actually sell rather well. I also buy them...once they cost less than 10€.

Date: 2019-04-05 12:13 am (UTC)I recently quit watching iZombie, Wentworth, Empire, and Doctor Who, none of which were particularly dramatic ~break-ups~, but just shows where I found myself needing to play on my phone more and more because I was bored paying attention to the episodes.
I also quit Torchwood and Misfits after the cast changes. I stuck with Misfits for the first three seasons, including the one where Nathan was replaced by Ruby, but there were just too many changes with season 4 to be losing Simon, Kelly, and Alisha, it had already lost its original feel for me after Nathan left tbh. And similarly with Torchwood I begrudgingly stuck around for Children Of Earth after Tosh and Owen were killed off, but then losing Ianto as well was just too much, it no longer resembled the original show
4. My comfort show would be anything light I guess, sitcoms especially I could sit and bingewatch for hours, particularly Friends and The Big Bang Theory. Also the early seasons of Gilmore Girls very much have that feel for me as well
(no subject)
Date: 2019-04-05 12:30 am (UTC)8. I...actually can’t think of any? I usually only start watching a show because it sounds intriguing, so it’s rarely a case where I was expecting to hate it, I wouldn’t really bother with a show in the first place if it sounds that awful to me lol. Certainly though there have been shows that I wasn’t expecting to love as much as I ultimately did. True Detective and Sex Education were recent shows where I wasn’t super excited to check them out, I mostly started watching Sex Education for Gillian Anderson, and True Detective because of how much critical praise and hype it has gotten, and I ended up enjoying both shows a lot more than I was initially expecting
26. Hmm I don’t think I do really. And heh yes, I picked this name out years ago on a whim, and it’s just kind of stuck with me as my internet name everywhere. It can be a little awkward though if you do tell people what it directly translates as, I really don’t even think of its origins much any more *g* Farscape fans do seem to appreciate it though, I still get the occasional person on reddit or ONTD saying they think it’s a cool name

Date: 2019-04-05 12:40 am (UTC)21. I’ve really enjoyed most bottle episodes, there’s something special about just keeping the focus on your core characters and watching them interact only with one another. I loved Fly from Breaking Bad for that reason, and bottle episodes were always something to look forward to on Friends and Community as well
It seems like they have a rep for being throwaway episodes to save money, but generally I find it’s more the case that the writers are really trying their best to get creative with them and make them something special

19. if you could write your own TV show, what would it be like?

Date: 2019-04-05 02:32 pm (UTC)(no subject)
Date: 2019-04-05 05:45 pm (UTC)28. I don’t, but I probably should! Sometimes I put them on temporarily if I have rewound a scene a few times and still can’t catch what was said, but generally I find it distracting to have them on all the time.
40. It’s hard to come up with an exact number as it depends on the show, but I guess around four-five seasons?
(no subject)
Date: 2019-04-05 05:58 pm (UTC)Also I’m really bitter on Amy Adam’s behalf that she hasn’t had more awards love for Sharp Objects
35. Hmm I guess it depends on the show. Honestly I don’t like really long episodes because sometimes they can drag a bit, and some Netflix shows do tend to be badly paced in that respect when they don’t have any rules about needing to tighten things up and edit down to an exact length. Most shows are around 40-45 minutes, and I guess that’s about the right length for me. I’m also happy with 25-30 minute episodes though, Russian Doll was a good length of episode as that was a season that you could easily bingewatch in an afternoon
I do think that some half hour shows on network television are getting a bit short to fit in all the commercials though, The Big Bang Theory are barely 20 minutes even any more
(no subject)
Date: 2019-04-05 06:13 pm (UTC)23. I would say Buffy and X-Files, both theme songs are so iconic that you instantly find yourself recognising them and bopping along if you hear them in a ringtone. It’s a real shame that most shows have dropped opening credits and theme songs now
25. I...can’t really think of any? Well I guess maybe Anthony Hopkins or Jodie Foster lol, it would be kind of cool if they made a cameo appearance in a new season of Hannibal
(no subject)
Date: 2019-04-05 06:19 pm (UTC)And also Dollhouse! I think it’s a real shame how quickly they had to rush through everything in the second season, you could tell that some of those plots had been intented to be gradually build up over 5-7 years, and instead Echo for example suddenly became someone with full self-awareness in the course of two episodes. It felt like they sadly had to skip and rush through a lot of cool stuff in order to get to the intended endpoint in 13 episodes
23. Answered above as well, it’s Buffy and X-Files :)

Date: 2019-04-05 06:44 pm (UTC)30. I used to be unsure about that, but I did watch Re:Mind on Netflix last year and that was all in Japanese. Unfortunately the show itself wasn’t particularly good in the end, but it wasn’t as distracting as I thought it would be following along with English subtitles, so yes I would definitely do that again as Netflix seem to bringing out more and more international shows. Elite is in my to-watch list for once, and that’s set in Spain
19 is answered a few comments above :)

Date: 2019-04-05 06:50 pm (UTC)I also really enjoyed the soundtrack for Big Little Lies
And 19 is answered a few comments above :)
(no subject)
Date: 2019-04-05 07:07 pm (UTC)For me I find that it’s really just sitcoms where I’m happy to sit through 22 episodes or more, otherwise I find that in most cases you can get a much better show with 16 episodes or less in a season
37. Actually I don’t think that there is really? At least I assume the question is referring to brand new shows being released that I’m excited for? I seemed to have more upcoming shows that I was excited for last year, I was very hyped for Sharp Objects for example because it was based on a book I already loved, plus it involved the director from Big Little Lies, but I can’t really think of anything new that I’m particularly excited about at the moment. There are some returning shows that I’m very much looking forward too though, particularly Killing Eve, Big Little Lies, Peaky Blinders, and Veronica Mars (idk, maybe the Veronica Mara revival counts as new?)

Date: 2019-04-06 09:00 pm (UTC)Yeah, that was a slightly odd question, although I do know shows that either were follow-ons to shows people loved that disappointed them -- I know I lot of people who hated Legend of Korra for not being more like Avatar: the Last Airbender, e.g. Or shows that are adaptations of beloved books or continuations of beloved franchises, I guess. (My answer to this question would probably be Game of Thrones, which I do not HATE, but I did stop watching after season 1 and have no interest in returning to it based on the direction the show took.)
It can be a little awkward though if you do tell people what it directly translates as, I really don’t even think of its origins much any more *g*
Haha, yeah, I could see that XP
And I'm with you on liking bottle episodes -- I feel like, with less Cool New Thing and Flash Bang Stuff to distract the eye, the writing and the acting has to work harder, and so they often end up being interesting stories with some very memorable scenes.

Date: 2019-04-07 11:53 am (UTC)34. And I guess that any show that I’m a big fan of it would be cool to get a peak behind the scenes, so I would probably say Farscape or Buffy
38. And that’s hard to narrow down when there are so many little changes you’d like to make with different shows! I guess if I picked some shows at random lol, I would say that with Gossip Girl I would have changed the writing of Dan as Gossip Girl so that it was something the writers had in mind from the beginning. I don’t hate the idea of him being GG, but it would have been nice if the logic had tracked more, instead of it being obvious that they pulled it out as a twist at the last moment. For X-Files I would have changed the cliffhanger ending, and I would have given Mulder and Scully a more satisfying wrap-up with them as a definite couple and properly reunited with William. Even if it would probably still have a tragic ending, I would at least wrap it all up properly and not just have Scully dismiss William as her son all together. And with Buffy I would have replaced the attempted rape with a scene of Spike trying to bite and turn Buffy instead

Date: 2019-04-08 07:39 am (UTC)I don't have any new shows on my radar either at the moment, but I am often bad at keeping up with what is coming. As with you I look forward to the return of shows: Victoria and Call the midwife are two such shows.

Date: 2019-04-08 10:22 am (UTC)It feels to me like longer seasons really work best with the old style of television where you’re just getting a new episode to enjoy every week, and not picking it apart too much. But yeah when I’m binge-watching I often find myself skipping certain episodes, and it really standing out to me which episodes just feel a bit pointless and not contributing much to the overall season. It doesn’t have to just be about advancing the seasonal arc either, character work is important too of course, but there are some fillers episodes that really do neither, and those do tend to stand out to me when you’re binge watching an entire season one after the other

Date: 2019-04-09 02:43 am (UTC)45. Well this is super unpopular lol, but I really don’t get the overzealous fandom love for Firefly, and how it comes up all the time as the greatest injustice of a cancellation ever. I had a really hard time getting into that show, I had to basically force myself through the pilot episode only because I had brought the DVDs and was determined to watch the show in its entirety, I would have given it a miss otherwise if I was watching it on FOX with the other live viewers. I do think it got better as it went along, but the first four or five episodes are just so dull to me that I really don’t get how it’s developed this reputation as being the most perfect and flawless 13 episode show ever produced. I wasn’t much of a fan of the whole cowboys in space theme either, I thought a lot of that was just really corny
