Smallville's John Schneider Dislikes Man Of Steel's Jonathan Kent

“I love Kevin, and I love what Kevin does. But I didn’t care for one scene in there, where Jonathan was advising Clark to do something that was self-serving, it was tell a lie, I can’t remember exactly what it was. I think Jonathan Kent is the best dad perhaps ever depicted on television. And I don’t mean my work, I just mean the man I was fortunate enough to play. He was a great father, and I don’t think the one in Man of Steel was a great father. He had some flaws that don’t belong in a comic book. I really had wished that had been me.”

Umm I haven't seen Man Of Steel yet and I'm not totally sure what moment he's commenting on, but since when did Smallville's Jonathan Kent never advise Clark to tell a lie or be self-serving, the Kent's on Smallville were constantly advising Clark to lie and telling him how vital it was to always protect the secret?!?

And meme taken from my flist!

If it's the movie and scene i'm thinking of, Mr. Kent told Clark he should have let a bus full of his peers from school drown/be hurt rather than diving down and ripping the emergency door off, because 'what if someone found out'.

I hated that movie, and that scene was one of the reasons why.

Ah okay, that makes more sense then, I was just really confused at John Schneider's quote putting it as Clark being self-serving and telling a lie being the awful thing that Jonathan Kent would never advise, when Smallville's Clark Kent did exactly that for years

That scene definitely sounds pretty dark and un-Superman! I haven't seen Man Of Steel yet, although it's one of the films that I always plan to getting around to seeing one day.

I think i watched maybe half the first season of Smallville, so i have no idea what that Mr. Kent ever said, but - yeah. That scene was *so incredibly wrong*.

Superman would *never* do that, and his dad would never tell him to do that.

I hope you enjoy the movie, when you get around to it. I loathed it.

Yep, I was thrown by the mention of "tell a lie" being a flaw that didn't fit with Jonathan Kent, a major part of the characterisation of the Kent's on Smallville was how secretive and paranoid they were of Clark's secret, they constantly told him not to trust anyone with it and to cover up what he was doing

I've always remembered how Lex was driven insane and given shock treatment by his own father in Shattered/Asylum, and Jonathan's response was to tell a devastated Clark to take some consolation in the fact that the forced ECT wiped Lex's memory of Clark's secret :shudders:

Character I'd let hang from a cliff: I can't remember her name, but the blonde lawyer that always makes a big deal of playing up to the judges and and being really passive aggressive in her insults to Alicia.

Character I'd frak or make-out with: Cary

Character I'd marry: Cary again :P

Character I'd wrap a blanket around: I'll be boring and say Cary again. He always seems to be scrambling to establish himself in the firm, he comes across as such an underdog to me in comparison to Alicia, Will, Diane, and Kalinda being a lot more secure in their positions

5 favorite characters: Alicia, Cary, Diane, Eli

3 OTPs: Hmm I don't really have any OTPS as such with this show, it's more the friendships that I value. But I'm reasonably on board with Peter/Alicia, and Diane and Kurt are also very sweet together

Funniest character: Probably Eli. Or maybe David Lee lol

Prettiest character: Cary

Most bad-ass character: Kalinda

Character I'd like as my BFF: Owen. (I would choose Alicia, but I think that I would be a little intimidated by her quite honestly!)

The scene he's referring to was in the trailer so you may have seen part of it.

Basically, Clark's school bus goes off a bridge and Clark saves everyone. His classmate's mother goes to the Kents and pretty much says, 'Clark has super powers.' The Kents talk their way out of it, but later Jonathan tells Clark that he needs to be more careful and Clark says, "What was I supposed to do? Let them all die?" and Jonathan responds, "Maybe."

Smallville had a similar scene in the season one episode Rogue. The difference being that SV Jonathan backtracks when Clark asks if he should have let someone die.

I have problems with MoS Jonathan, which I won't get into here because I don't want to spoil anything, but I'm okay with him in that particular scene. I feel that we, the audience, are supposed to disagree with him. We know that Jonathan Kent is wrong.

At that moment Mos Jonathan presents Clark with two choices 1) Protect Others. 2) Protect Yourself. Jonathan wants Clark to pick option #2, but ultimately Clark chooses #1. And I love that about Clark, because becoming Superman wasn't his destiny and he wasn't pushed into it. He chose it.

It's the same reason I loved "Rule them with strength Jor-El" when he was first introduced on Smallville, and deeply dissatisfied when they retconned him. I loved the idea of the person sent to conquer Earth choosing instead to protect it.

Interesting! Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the Smallville Kent's didn't have a similar viewpoint, they just didn't want to look/feel like awful people by actually saying it. But for all that we were told that Clark learned to become Superman from the example that Jonathan set, his parents were hardly gung-ho at first when Clark did start rescuing people. They are really freaked out when he saves Whitney from the burning car explosion in the second episode, and Clark was always their first priority over others. Not that that's necessarily a bad PoV to have for a parent, but I definitely feel that becoming Superman and saving lives was more or less all down to Clark, his parents were generally more concerned with freaking out over what if someone saw their son doing something heroic

Yet in interviews you get the impression that the show (and the actors) did believe that they were presenting it as Clark learning to become Superman from the example that Jonathan set for him, and eh I just don't see that. IMO they would have kept Clark safely hidden away on the farm with them forever if it were up to them

"I think Jonathan Kent is the best dad perhaps ever depicted on television."

Wow. Gonna have to disagree with him there!

Haven't seen MoS but SV Jonathan was always encouraging Clark to lie and to think that the effect this had on others (e.g. Lex) did not matter at all as long as Clark was OK

Totally agree! I suppose that you can argue that he was a good father in terms of being loving and protective towards his son, but all too often he was a hypocrite IMO who thought that he was a better man than he was. Everything about the Kent's seemed so insular and close-minded to me, Clark didn't even get to know his Grandfather because Jonathan had got in a punch-up with him years earlier

Jonathan ended up in prison in Rogue when he still couldn't control his anger, his final death was a heart attack when he lost his temper with Lionel, yet the show wanted to tell us that Clark could hold himself back from losing his temper because of the lessons that his wise and great father taught him!?

As someone who hasn't seen MoS so I know no context, I totally agree with you. Jonathan was one of my least favorite characters because he made such crappy decisions and was so hypocritical of others. And he put his son first in a lot of situations which makes sense, but he did it knowing the effect that it would have on others, the effect it would have on Clark even when he was trying to protect Clark from himself. Like when he didn't want Clark to play football in S4 and Clark has to literally explain I can hurt anyone by shaking their hand, I had learn to adapt to that, you trust me to do that why can't you trust me to do this?

The best version of Jonathan I remember is from Lois&Clark. But even that version is hazy in memory, so no guarentees.

Also meme? that i'm totally stealing.

Yeah I always thought that the Kent's from Lois And Clark, and Clark himself for that matter, were closest to how I would picture them from the comics. SV's Jonathan and Martha always had a darker streak running through them to me in just how far you could imagine them going to protect their own

Character I'd let hang from a cliff: Jonathan of course :P

Character I'd frak or make-out with: Lex

Character I'd marry: Clark

Character I'd wrap a blanket around: Lex

5 favorite characters: Lex, Chloe, Lana, Tess, Alicia

3 OTPs: Clark/Chloe, Lex/Lana, Clark/Lex, Chloe/Davis, Chloe/Oliver

Funniest character: Erm I dunno, none of the characters were all that funny to me. I guess that Lois and Jimmy were the obvious comedic characters, but sometimes I find their kind of comedy a bit much, it was usually more the situations in SV that I would find funny when the writers weren't forcing it

Prettiest character: Clark

Most bad-ass character: Lex

Character I'd like as my BFF: Chloe

Good answers all around. I especially love your 5 favorites (so many ladies and so much love deserved for them and a mention of Alicia, which should happen more.) and your OTPs. ;D

Yep, its been a while since I've seen it but over all, they seem to represent the best imo. And the crush on Dean Cain I've had since I was super little agrees about him too. One thing I loved about that was that for him he was CK first and Superman second and it was alway important to him that people saw him that way. And yes, SV defenitely had a darker edge on the Kents, slightly less with Martha, but even with her too. Hers was just a little less obvious than Jonathan's, I think.

I have way too many OTP's for Smallville lol

The plots for Lois And Clark hadn't aged that well for me when I tried to watch the first season 1 again a few years back, but I did always like the characterisation of Lois and Clark definitely, I always had a crush on Clark :P

And even Martha from SV definitely had a darker streak than you might expect, i.e when Annette talked about Martha being attracted to Lionel partly out of gratitude at him being there from the beginning and fixing Clark's adoption, even though really he only did that so that he could hold it over Jonathan's head as blackmail material to take over the Ross's land and spread his influence in Smallville. So again IMO it's an example of the Kent's being very much family first, even when protecting Clark actually completely screwed over their friends

I liked the dynamic between Chlex in terms of them snarking at one another in their scenes together, but I never shipped them romantically, I was more of a Lexana fangirl *g*

And I did like Chlollie as a ship, but admittedly I wasn't as into them as I had been with Chlavis (who had AMAZING chemistry). Chlollie were cute though, but I wish the writers had spend more time on developing them, the whole friends with benefits thing seemed really rushed and practically happened off-screen. It seemed like there wasn't much space for anything but Clois in season 9 :(

And yeah, don't get me started on Chimmy lol

I'd have to point you to apeygirl's fantastic "Deep in the Bottle" and "Depths We Sink to." These fics made me a Chlexer, and I've never regretted it. It's impossible not to love evil Lex totally into my fav blonde. Warning, they are NC-17.

I wanted to love Chlollie, and even read some great fics for them, but the lack of screen sizzle left me cold. I actually liked Lollie a lot more. I'd have loved a Lollie and Chlark world. :)

As for Chlavis... I loved them. Lol, so much so I'm 100+ chapters deep into writing their story. Obsessed? Maybe...

Yeah, S9 and S10 really was all about the Clois. Didn't hate Clois, but didn't love it either. It just didn't feel natural. Maybe because we had 8 seasons of Clana? I wanted to like Lexanan too, but Lex just seemed so cold in S6. Couldn't do it.

I loved Aaron Ashmore in other roles -- Warehouse 13 comes to mind. So not sure why he was such a fail for me on SV. Maybe it was just his character? Jimmy's character wasn't very likeable, even when they were clearly trying.

I thought that Chlolloe had great chemistry in the scene that Allison directed when Oliver shows Chloe how to shoot a bow and arrow, but they didn't have all that much to work with after that sadly

And I liked Jimmy in scenes with Clark when he was being a fanboy about Clark having powers, I wish they had developed their friendship more, instead so much of his character seemed to be about being the jealous and possessive boyfriend who was constantly putting Chloe down :(

And Clois felt pretty forced to me, it felt like they didn't spend enough time setting up why and when they fell for one another, they coasted too much on their comic book history

Clearly, with the moral superiority implied by that comment, he was making it in character as Jonathan Kent.

In all seriousness, I'm not surprised he would say that. there was definitely a huge divorce on SV in between the characters the writers and the other people working on SV thought they were creating and the characters that actually appeared on our screens.

Yep, the show unfortunately always seemed quite blinded by Jonathan's hypocrisy, particularly when it come to making secret deals with Lionel and then taking out his guilt on Lionel's son from the moment he met him. Apparently we were supposed to buy that Jonathan preferred to believe in people most of the time, but that he somehow just had a sixth sense about the Luthor's

Urgh I know, as a Lex stan I would boil over sometimes at how rude and judgemental he was. Like one minute he would be acting decently towards Lex and shaking his hand, the next he would be tearing his cheque up and making snooty comments about "I don't imagine you would" when Lex said that he didn't understand what the problem was.

And lol remember how the show made it so that the only time he would give Lex a chance was in the AU of Lexmas where Jonathan was the town mayor or something and Lex was penniless, THEN he was happy to act all welcoming and gracious about inviting Lex into his home, but god forbid you have money and make Jonathan feel like you're lording it over him and his salt of the earth ways

Man of Steel was just terrible. It was like the anti-Superman movie. Evrything that makes him the character he is supposed to be is corrupted. He is dark and broody. In fact, for like the first 20 minutes he doesn't talk at all. And that warm and loving upbringing Clark had? Nope -- you got Johnathan telling him to let people die.

Basically, if it was a Batman movie, you'd see have seen him with 2 machine guns mowing down people coming home from the theater.

Character I'd wrap a blanket around: None of them tbh lol, Blair kinda early on I guess, but by the end it wasn't really the show of woobies for me!

5 favorite characters: Blair, Serena, Dan, Jenny, Lily

3 OTPs: Blair/Dan, Serena/Blair, Serena/Carter. Although I wasn't really OTP'ish for Serena/Carter, but they were my favourite Serena pairing and I was disappointed that the show dropped them. Also used to ship Lily/Rufus and Chuck/Blair, but I was soured on both of them by the end. It was still sad that Rufus and Lily didn't end up together though, that felt really random

Serena/Carter was such a beautiful, beautiful thing. In the entire show, he's the only guy who really rocked Serena, who affected her after the fact. It felt like that was the case yes, in the first three seasons he usually made a few sporadic appearances every year, but once his film career took off I guess that he was no longer available? It's such a shame because I loved that early season 3 arc with him and Serena ("Who is he not to want you" :swoons:), but in his final appearance it seemed like Serena seriously falling for him was all wiped away in service of her relationship with Nate. And Nate/Serena were somewhat cute together, but I could never get all that excited for them

I was never all that into Nate/Serena either- for her, it seemed like a safety net, and for him, he just hero-worshipped her too much for it to be a realistic relationship.
