Umm I hate to say it, but The Flash fell really flat for me this week :( The villain just felt too formulaic and was really struggling to hold my attention. It didn't bother me so much in the first two episodes, so I don't know if it's just because of the mood that I was in while I was watching, or if it simply is that the meta-human of the week is getting old for me now. The writing just felt kind of bad in places, apparently the first two episodes were both by the show creators, which might explain why they felt so much stronger to me...
The flashbacks with Caitlin were the better part of the episode IMO, good background for explaining why her character can come across as so closed-off, as well as deepening Cisco's character a little more. Also I found her scenes with Barry a lot more organic then his ones with Iris tbh, perhaps partly because we're seeing Barry and Caitlin connecting for the first time and opening up to one another (plus they both seem quite geeky and compatible in that way). Whereas Barry and Iris already have the childhood friends backstory, so it's more a case of telling us that Barry has always been in love with her, without really showing us why. I'm not really in any shipping corner so far though, and I don't know that Barry/Caitlin necessarily reads as romantic chemistry, but those scenes are the more interesting ones for me to watch at the moment definitely because I'm seeing a friendship start to develop and actually going somewhere, whereas Barry's pinning over Iris is starting to feel a bit samey
I didn't find Iris's scenes very engaging this week at all actually, her relationship with Eddie is kind of dull for me at the moment :/ I was starting to get intrigued last week at where they were going with her character when she was talking about investigating the Red Streak, but I wasn't really here for all of the Eddie romance in this episode, I just have zero emotional investment in that relationship quite honestly. Plus her relationship with Joe feels very off to me disappointingly, I like Joe's fatherly relationship with Barry a lot, but I feel like they write him as waaay too controlling with Iris. It just doesn't make sense that she is so desperate for his approval as an adult woman, the writing comes across like Iris and her Dad are reacting to one another as if she is still a teenager who needs his permission on how to live her life? I could understand if she were a teenager and he felt that she was too young to start dating, but she's in her early 20's and her father is going to be bothered by her having an adult relationship, c'mon?
To end on a more positive note :P I did really like the scene between Barry's Dad and Joe at the prison, and Joe's scenes in general. Also Harrison Wells remains the most intriguing character to me, I hope they start shaking things up soon and make that arc more of a focus. I guess that I'm just more into arc-based stuff, rather than random new villains to defeat every episode. It didn't bother me in the first two episodes, but I just felt like this episode was repeating the same formula again, and I'm ready for something new. I'm probably being way too hard on it though, it's still only the third episode after all :shrugs: (Plus I did watch it after work when I was really tired and struggling to concentrate, so yeah the mood I was in probably didn't help)
Supernatural wasn't all that exciting to me this week either I'm afraid. It was decent enough, and there were some moments that I really appreciated, but overall I think that my expectations were just too high as it didn't absolutely blow me away as I'd been hoping for.Okay honestly I'm mostly disappointed that Sam and Dean didn't get a hug and super-dramatic H/C comforts like in my favourite fics :P Plus I'm bummed that we're losing Demon Dean already :pouts: Thinking about it, it does make sense that they would want to return to the MotW formula at some point and would feel that they need the brothers working on the same side again sooner rather than later, but still I would have liked to have seen Jensen playing Dean as a demon until mid-season at least, we hardly got any time with him at all!
Jensen and Jared both did some excellent work I have to say, I love all the scenes of Sam and Dean, especially Sam trying to get through to Dean when he's tied up, ooh and when Dean is stalking him and trying to kill him. Also the way that Jensen played Dean's expression at returning to his old self again, ouch. It should be interesting to see how Dean is portrayed next episode as it seems like there are still a lot of unresolved issues there with how he feels about being back to his old self. I wish that the episode had ended on seeing Sam bringing Dean food actually, instead of the bizarrely random ending that we did get. (Did I miss something, or am I meant to know that demon from seasons 8 or 9?)
And the pictures that Dean kept were very touching, but heh it kind of took me out of it when they used such recognisable candids of Jensen and Jared smiling at one another. I know they were dressed in character as Sam and Dean, but those pics just screamed Jared and Jensen to me XD. It was sweet though the idea behind Dean keeping those family pics, and Sam coming across them :)
I wasn't really a fan of them portraying hell though, I always liked when we had to use our imaginations more. Like when we got the brief glimpse Dean screaming on the chains at the end of season 3, or Dean telling Sam what it was like down there. Seeing Crowley actually sitting on his throne in hell just felt kind of Charmed-like and cheesy to me I dunno. For both hell and for the angels, I preferred when they kept that stuff more off-screen, the way they choose to portray it just never feels otherworldly enough I guess.
ETA Okay yeah actually I was being too hard on SPN, that wasn't a bad episode at all, there were some very good scenes in it

Date: 2014-10-24 05:47 am (UTC)I think that's personally quite understandable since she seems to be the only thing he has left (did we ever find out where Iris's mother is or why she's not with them? Is she dead too? If they mentioned it, I must have missed it), and so of course their relationship is probably "different" than a normal father/daughter relationship. For me that made a lot of sense. Especially since she obviously hadn't dated anyone seriously before and he wants her to be happy and not get hurt... and I don't think he felt that she's too young to start dating or something like that, but he IS right, it can complicate things that she's dating his partner at work and when things go downhill, then what? He's in the middle... ;-) I think it rather was a problem of "who" and not THAT she's dating :)
I wonder if the "villain of the week" thing is now changing a bit with Wentworth Miller coming in next episode, since he has a multi-season arc.
Also: I think this week's episode was necessary to build up for Ronny's return.
I did enjoy it very much, sorry you didn't ;-)

Date: 2014-10-24 08:27 am (UTC)I don't think that Iris's mother has ever been mentioned, no? And I can understand Joe wanting the best for Iris, at times he just seems way to overprotective towards her compared to how he treats Barry though (him not wanting Barry to tell her the truth about his abilities to supposedly keep her safer also seems like a stretch to me frankly), so I haven't been able to enjoy the Joe/Iris scenes in the same way as the Barry and Joe relationship :/
