Vince Gilligan Talks ‘Breaking Bad’ Regret, Hints at Mike’s Return in ‘Better Call Saul’

[W]hen I heard anecdotally that a lot of people were of the belief that the whole thing had been a dream, then I was kind of scratching my head because that to me as a fan of storytelling, that to me, is the antithesis of a satisfying ending. [...] It certainly doesn’t work well for me that these people I’ve invested all my care and close attention to for years on end, that nothing they’ve accomplished happened to be real: It was all some bulls— dream. [Laughs] I was like, “Are you kidding me?” Who would find that… what’s the word?… fulfilling?"

Yes! I always thought those weird theories that the critics were coming with on how it should have ended seemed like the most unsatisfying way ever of ending the show

Although Better Call Saul is set, for the most part, in the days before Walt broke bad, Gilligan admits that he and co-creator Peter Gould have been “turning over” the possibility of jumping to other points in the timeline.

"We think, by and large, this show will be a prequel, but the wonderful thing about the fractured chronology we employed on Breaking Bad for many years is the audience will not be thrown by us jumping around in time. So it’s possible that we may indeed do that, and we’ll see the past and perhaps the future."

Who is planning on watching the spin-off? Tbh I'm not all that excited for it at the moment, I may or may not watch depending on if I hear good things about it. I like Saul a lot on BB, I'm just not sure if I'd be that interested in a show centered around him :shrugs:

And my computer still seems cursed :( I've ran malwarebytes and it says there's no virus, but I still can't use a search engine without internet explorer closing down, I can't highlight and copy or paste on individual LJ entries, not can I select pics or mood (I have to use my ipad for that). Plus I can't edit my posts at TWoP. I'm wondering now if it could be an IE problem, maybe I need to update it or something...

I think I might check out the spinoff later if I hear good things about it...I worry that it'll flop hard, though. Sophomore syndrome, or something...you know?

"It's all a dream" would be the worst possible ending, followed by "they were dead all along." I loved the ending, personally.

I'll check out the prequel; I don't have high hopes, but it's the closest we'll ever get to more BrBa.

Oh, are there spoilers in here? I've only seen season 1...

I don't tend to watch spinoffs, even if I really loved their mother show. Never watched Caprica, Angel or Ashes to Ashes, even though I loved BSG, Buffy and Life on Mars. So I may try the Saul show just out of curiosity but I'm not expecting to love it anything like as much as Breaking Bad. But it does seem like a good opportunity to flesh out Mike's backstory. I'd like to see the ABQ world expanded beyond the White, Schrader and Pinkman characters.

I can't see the question Gilligan was asked (for some reason, that link just gives me a blank page), but I don't recall ANYONE saying they wanted "the whole thing" - by which I assume he means the whole series? - to be a dream, just the final episode.

The point wasn't "that nothing they’ve accomplished happened to be real" - it was that Walt's (somewhat unrealistic) victory in the last episode was actually just a figment of his imagination, that actually he froze to death in the car in New Hampshire. I think that says a LOT about Walt as a person, without negating anything that's come before, that he would envision this big "out with a bang" ending for himself that never happened.

I think it also makes a statement that's relatively consistent with the rest of the series - that he still views himself as the hero, but what he actually deserves is to die alone and never accomplish what he set out to do. It says that there is no easy way to fix all the wrongs he's committed, and that the people he loves just have to live with the consequences of his actions, even if they didn't deserve it.

Don't get me wrong - I love the ending as is. However, I do think the dream theory was pretty fascinating. Breaking Bad, as a whole, and this final string of episodes in particular, has not been the kind of show that pays off with a happy ending - so the idea that the happy ending is all in Walt's head kind of makes a good deal of sense. I can see why some people would think it's MORE logical and in keeping with the series' themes than what actually happened.

Which version of IE do you have? Because a lot of websites have stopped supporting anything older than IE10. Although your problems don't really sound like they would be related to a browser version - more like the software itself being corrupted. If updating IE doesn't help, you could try to install Chrome or Firefox - if the problems continue, then the problem goes deeper than the browser.

I'll probably check out the spinoff, just to see. I mean, I don't expect it to be epic or anything, but I also don't expect it to be horrible. And I do wish they'd bring Mike back for it.

I agree -- Saul was a great ensemble character, but I have no interest in watching a show that centers on him.

Also, the actor who plays Mike was on Community this week, as a criminology professor, or as the show insisted, "teacher". (I love the characters on that show, but they clearly know very little about, well, colleges.)

I think I would like to watch Better Call Saul as not entirely a BB spinoff, but an independent storyline on its own with the common thing being the character Saul. As much as I would love to watch something based on BB, I think it's really over and that's it. Trying to extend it will be to give it life beyond what it's supposed to be.

I don't know what Windows you have, but have you tried using Microsoft Security Essentials? If not, can you get a download of Chrome or Firefox setup files somewhere?
