They haven't even finished with the cuts yet, London are supposed to lose up to 19% of the force, and there was already a rise in violent crime as a result even before the riots :/
I'm not blaming the police who are obviously seriously outnumbered and doing the best they can, but this is just pititful when you have a full-blown riot going on and the most they can manage is this
["London are supposed to lose up to 19% of the force,"]
Seriously? lol Morons. Well maybe that won't go through now. They need to take policing lessons from Rudolf Giuliani and sentencing lessons from the US too.
Boris Johnson has now said they need to think again about cutting the London force further, but apparently the Home Offce is still saying the reductions in the Police budget are manageable. I don't even know what to think any more
They said they were ready to deal with it last night, and instead it seems it got worse than ever with three men trying to protect their property being deliberately run over and killed :/
"The urgent need to take action to address our budget deficit is clear from events across the world right now. The reductions in the police budget for the Spending Review period are manageable. There is no question that the police will still have the resources to do their important work. At the end of this Spending Review period, the police will still have enough officers to deploy in the kind of numbers we've seen in the past couple of days."
It's not just her. It's entire CENSORED CENSORED ruling class, Tory Labour LibDem. The roots of this go back decades, and every one of them has put his own little pebble towards making it worse and more certain. A few hundred politicians swinging from lammposts on Whitehall and Parliament Square - each with a journalist and a big business banker to keep him or her company - would be a good start to the job of straightening this country out.
They have no idea what to do with them. I saw one group of riot police heading towards rioters and ordering them to "disperse", as though they were a group of nineteenth-century rebels trying to storm Parliament. Of course, the rioters had already done their looting and wanted nothing better than to "disperse" each to his or her council flat, with all the stuff they'd stolen. The police are as clueless as Alicia Silverstone and not nearly as nice.
Cameron's stupid fucking government ruled out using water cannons or tear gas, yet Cameron insists they'll take all necessary measures. He needs to make up his mind. Because of wimp policing, these thugs don't respect law and order. This is a massive attack on society and indeed civiization, and it needs to be confronted.
I would not use gas or water cannon - the effect is the same. Those are weapons for crowds that intend to storm Parliament or some specific political target. These are just hordest of thieves. You do them a favour by letting them get away. The best thing the police could do would be to surround them, keep them in one place and sqeeze them tighter and tighter - a variant on "kettling". But you may remember that there was an outcry against it a few months ago and the police had to promise to reconsider its use. Plus, at present Scotland Yard is leaderless thanks to the Murdoch scandal, so even if anyone saw the right path, they might not have the authority to follow it AND to defend it from the inevitable critics.
