I'm been thinking more and more about buying a kindle, I was just wondering if anyone has any info on how easy it is to transfer fan fic into a kindle? And this might be an odd question, but can you then divide them into categories? Part of what I like about LJ memories is that I can store fic as angst, AU etc, and keep the same types of fic grouped together.

I've had my Kindle for a few weeks and I'm loving it so far. Transferring fanfic on to it is easy using Calibre (which is free to use) to convert the files into a format the Kindle can handle (.mobi is the best format to use). You can even upload your files direct to the Kindle using the Calibre software.

As for dividing your fic into categories - yes, you can create folders on your Kindle, which is a great way of keeping everything organised.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you need a url for the Calibre software. :)

Thanks for the response! I've been thinking about getting one for my birthday next year, but to be honest I don't find myself buying all that many new books lately. (Partly for reasons of storage LOL, in which case the kindle might encourage me to start buying more of them!) But it really appeals to me as a place to store fan fic *dork*

And hmm so if a fan fic is in seperate chapers on LJ, you just save them all and Calibre will transfer them into a complete document for the kindle?

I totally wanted an e-book reader to read fic first and then books.

I usually make one file with all the chapters or parts of the fic, then I convert it in Calibre to transfer them over to my IPAD.

Thanks for the help :) And yeah I find myself reading way more fan fic than actual books these days. Part of it is that I have shelves full of books (as well as er piles of books on the floor cause not all will fit on the book shelves) which puts me off buying more new books, so the kindle can help out in that respect *g*

But also I guess I've kind of got more used to fan fic these days, and being able to pick out exactly what I like and would be interested in

You'd need to save them as a complete file first. Calibre will then convert the file into your desired format. The Kindle will read pdf files, but I've found it much easier to convert them into .mobi first, as the Kindle handles that much better.

I've uploaded all my favourite fanfic on to mine, and it's so much more confortable to read on the Kindle than on a computer screen. And you have the added bonus that you can take your fanfic with you and read it anywhere! :)

Wow! How do you create the folders and move docs to those folders? My sister and I couldn't figure it out for her DX. Is this for the newer Kindles?

I think it's for the newer Kindles, but I read somewhere (probably on the Amazon forum) that the older models can be updated via software - but I don't know how true that is.

On my Kindle you can create folders via the menu button. There should be a 'Create New Collection' in the menu list, which can then be named (for example 'fanfic'). It's then fairly straightforward to add your uploaded files into the collection. It's a great feature and has worked very well so far!

You can get the software upgrade for the Kindle DX here - this will allow you to have collections and some other new features.

Hi! I have a program that converts files for my Kindle but I don't think it's Calibre and my files always end up getting a little wonky on the formatting. Would you mind linking me up to the Calibre software? :)

Hi!

Here you go: Calibre

Hope it works as well for you as it does for me! :)

It's pretty easy to transfer fic to the Kindle DX in PDFs via the USB. You can also download Calibre to convert fic into the Kindle Mobipocket form and use the USB to move it to the Kindle DX. I'm not sure about the newer Kindles.

You can't group or categorize it though. It all goes into one folder. That's frustrating.

If you have a Kindle 2 or 3, you can upgrade your Kindle software and then use Collections. I think the DX also is eligible for this upgrade.

I've had my kindle for about a week now and so far I'm really loving it!!

One feature that really appeals to me is that you can get the opening chapter (i think it's the first chapter) of any book without buying - and then if you like it you can get the whole book and if you dont no expense :)

The grouping/categories is quite basic but easy enough to use... you can just make a category and then decide what books go into that folder...

And as someone already said Calibre is perfect for file conversions.

Ooh, I'm glad to see all the responses to this. I've been drooling over the Kindle 2 in my local Best Buy store for a couple weeks now. It's so slim & sexy. Does want. :)

If you're gonna get a Kindle, get the 3 - it's cheaper and far better!

I have written SO much about kindles. Yes you can transfer. Yes you can categorize!

If you are going to buy one, can I point you here? :D

(I answer lots of q's in that post, but feel free to ask me more)

Also, I have tons of Kindle links here: http://www.delicious.com/txvoodoo/kindle

Hee I know, one of your recent entries on kindles was part of what started me thinking about them more :D

It won't be for a while though, I'm thinking of making it a birthday present for next year. And thank you for the links! Oh can I ask, is it possible to skip straight to a chapter, or do you need to read through chronologically? Yes I am one of those people who nearly always reads the end of the book first :P

You can skip to various places in the book. Skipping to a chapter depends on the original formatter - if they included a linked table of contents, you're good. Not all publishers do, but that's not a Kindle issue. If the publisher put it in, it's generally there in all e-formats.

Thanks! If I could be annoying and ask one more question, can you bookmark favourite pages from a novel?

You can indeed! And you can "clip" pages, or make highlights.

You know those book quotes I posted? I copy/pasted them from my Kindle highlights :D

I have a kindle which I love but I feel like I don't even know half of the things it can do. LOL. For instance I've never actually used it to put fic on but now that you mention it that's a wonderful idea. It appears from other comments that you can do folders which...I sort of didn't know? But that's awesome. I know that you can use conversion software to convert into Kindle-friendly files. :)

Heh I feel like that with a lot of these gadgets I buy. I'm not very adventurous, so I usually just end up using them for whatever originally appealed to me about them, and not exploring them any more than that

I originally heard about the kindle a while ago from one of my Chlark friends talking about uploading fanfic to it actually, so I've always known that was a feature of it. I was just curious about how easy it was to do

And apparently creating folders is one of the features with the newer kindles only, so it might not be on yours I guess? I'm surprised that wasn't a feature before because it seems a bit disorganised to just have all the books and documents in one folder to find. I have all my books organised into categories on the bookshelves anyway (is that really sad :P ), so I'd definitely want to be able to do the same on the kindle to help me dive into exactly the type of books or fan fic I feel like reading that day

I recomment Calibre and Mobipocket Creator (if you install it, choose the Publisher Edition when asked during the install - it offers more options)

Also, Archive of our Own now offers downloadable fic in Kindle-usable format!

You may not have the latest Kindle software on your Kindle, which is what's required for Collections - you can find latest software here. Note that if you have a Kindle 1, you're out of luck, but all later versions allow this.
