Oh, screw that! They gave us the worst finale ever and the Jenry retcon and now the comics are going to put Chloe in a Jimmy comic? I mean, the show makes him her brother-in-law and ten years younger and now... I can't even process it. Ugh! Don't want this.
Thanks for posting, though. I need a little vitriol to get through the weekend.
Can you talk a little about that supporting cast you're building?
One thing we talked a lot about during the pitch process was the idea that, in a place like Metropolis, there are all these young people who live and work in close proximity to these awe-inspiring heroes and villains, and they sort of build up the infrastructure that makes all the high-action stuff we see in comics normally possible in the first place. In a city like this, there would be a lot of interns, entry-level post-grads and junior executives for whom guys like Steel, Booster Gold and Lex Luthor aren't far-away legends; they get their coffee, handle their schedules and write up their press releases every day. The closest real world comparison I can make is to Washington, D.C., where you have all these idealistic younger types doing a lot of the behind the scenes work for The President and The Senate and whoever. Metropolis is exactly the same way, except there, we're talking about The Daily Planet, S.T.A.R. Labs, Steelworks, LexCorp, etc. Jimmy, semi-famously known as Superman's Pal, basically the closest thing he's ever had to a sidekick, would obviously be a very big part of that scene. It's a pretty interesting position to put him in and impacts our story in a lot of different ways.
So it sounds like there *could be* an interesting role for her character there. But at the same time, I am annoyed if they do make her the same age as Jimmy after SV had to completely retcon Jimmy/Henry because of him not being the right age. So DC are going to make Chloe younger than Clark now? That doesn't seem very fitting...
Wasn't that the plan some time ago, too? Chloe being some younger person than Clark that went to SV high and starting at the Daily Planet? I just really want them to respect her, darn it.
Yeah I remember hearing a few times about Chloe being introduced to the comics and it not working out, I'm not sure why?
And my guess is that they're steer well clear of reporting and the DP for Chloe, and have her as a techie character and involved with computers in some way
This one seems to suggest he'll have her back to her roots reporting, but not for the DP.
" She is from Smallville. She is a reporter. She is still the same fearless, funny character that she is on "Smallville" and that's something that I take very seriously. I definitely want all of the "Smallville" fans to check out the book."
I'm glad to hear that, that someone recognizes she is a reporter, but not so happy they're going to tease some romantic history. Does he not know about Jenry?
I'm seriously torn.....I've wanted Chloe in the Comics for forever....but as an adult/Clark's best friend. This could be okay if done right or It could be as disappointing as SV themselves. I'll hold off final judgement for now until I see the final print. Maybe now they'll make a Chloe action figure ( do you hear me sdcc2011?)
Yeah I'm the same way. On one hand it's squee at Chloe being in the comics medium. But my immediate reaction to it being associated with Jimmy Olsen is blegh :P Still just as long as she's not playing his love interest than I'm not totally opposed to it, but I do think they should have kept her as the same age as Clark
Taking her out of Smallville and out of Clark's past is a mistake, in my opinion. Not only does it take away the Chloe and Clark relationship & friendship that I love, but it takes away the Watchtower & JLA history that she has, which is another area of her character that I love.
I'll be interested to see just how much younger they make her- and I sincerely hope that they don't make Chloe/Jimmy a relationship again, because DO NOT WANT.
And the character totally needs better hair. If you're really going to make Chloe younger, give her flippy hair.
Apparently there are legal reasons for why they have to avoid Allison's likeness, because then she would have a claim on copyright of her image and could get royalties
Yeah I would have been happier if they had introduced her as Watchtower and working with the JL, but then I guess that would have got the comic purists whining again because of Oracle already having that role. It seems that whatever they write in for Chloe, there will be someone that already has that role...
Yeah, sure. Cause having forty different Flashes and ten different Robins, as well as multiple Superboys and Wonder Girls, that's okay. Having Chloe have a similar role to one of the existing women in the DC verse is just out of the question.
I maintain that they should have started her out in Birds of Prey. Oracle would have found a talented smart woman like that and put her to good use.
And why the HELL can't she be the same age as Clark? Or just below him? There were other people in that school besides Pete, Lana, and Clark. Amazingly enough.
Having Chloe have a similar role to one of the existing women in the DC verse is just out of the question.
Well now, you know it's just unheard of for two women to be involved in the same profession ;)
And yep, they could have very easily introduced her as a childhood friend of Clark's, or even as Lois's cousin. I'd have thought that would have appealed to SV fans a lot more than the Jimmy Olsen connection. I mean I *presume* the goal is to entice SV fans, in which case it's probably not a great idea to just use the name but not keep the character history at all concistent
Srsly, guise, there are literally two Kara Zor-Els in the DCverse right now.
I'm not so sure why it would have been so threatening for Lois to have a cousin (they could do some Chlo-Lo, or a Chlo-Lo-Lu vignette) or for Clark to KNOW someone else of the female persuasion from high school. He's not a bad looking guy, even with glasses. I really don't see a JO connection bringing people in, whereas BAMF!Chloe or even Lois' cousin Chloe would have done a lot more for them.
It's like they think that it might work, but they're going to half-ass it anyway.
It seems somewhat similar to the way they were going to bring her in the last time, as a junior reporter at the Daily Planet--- only this time, we have some sketches of her?
For as many places as they could fit a character like Chloe into the DC Universe- with the Birds of Prey, where she'd rock, from one of the multi-verses that they've developed recently, or anything....bringing her in this way seems unoriginal.
I can't get too worked up til it's actually published and I can see what they do with her. Jimmy's probably my least favorite Superman universe character to have her interact with- if she has to be younger, I'd rather have her interact with Kon or Kara. Maybe she will.
The age is what's bugging me the most :/ After 8 years of her role being closely associated with working with Clark, it feels wrong to then introduce her to the comics as the same age as Jimmy Olsen when the real Jimmy Olsen on SV was a young child in comparison to Clark and Chloe (I would presume she will be around the same age as Jimmy anyway?)
LOL Yes I do hope they continue working on that design because I'm guessing they're going for the high school Chloe look, but the resemblance there is practically zero. I'm surprised they didn't give her flippy hair at least as that was pretty closely associated with season 1 Chloe, and could have looked cute in a comic book drawing. The cut in that pic looks way too boyish to me, I don't think she's ever had it cut as short as in that pic
Remember the huge fuss that A&M made in the Exile commentary about how Allison cut her hair short over the season 2 hiatus and they didn't like it. That was as short as her hair ever got, and I always thought that style was still quite flattering and stylish. The haircut in that link rather looks like generic young tomboy to me
Tying her forever to Jimmy Olsen when they have so MANY avenues of awesome to use is INEXCUSABLE. She'd better not be his love interest. I'm for serious. Do NOT cross me on this one, DC. I've taken way too much from you douchebros this week already.
Yeah I'm not even going to be touching it if she's playing his love interest. I'd much rather she played one of the " idealistic younger types doing a lot of the behind the scenes work", and was an interesting character in her own right that Jimmy just happens to meet for some reason or another
SV's Chloe was never paired with any guy (well for longer than an episode) before season 6, and a lot of people weren't thrilled with how they portrayed her with Jimmy or with Davis, so I'm sure they can do better than presenting her as a love interest in the comics. There's so much more they could do with her character
You're right about how she was single for about half the series. Bringing in Jimmy just to be her LI was pointless and dumb, and I think bringing HER in just to be a LI is pointless and dumb. NO ONE cares who Jimmy dates. It would be much better for her to be her own character. This is probably rule ONE of writing any character. Think of who the character IS, by themselves, what they think and can do, before you decide to force plot devices on them. If you don't have a character established, you can't predict how that character will behave.
And they have a kick ass character in Chloe already. It would be foolish to introduce her to a new audience without showing them who she is. I don't really like her being stuck in Jimmy's comic anyway, and would much rather have seen her taken into Birds of Prey, but I'd settle for an idealistic spitfire with some of that classic Chloe spunk from S1-3.
She's fun. She's incredibly clever. She's quick. She's very ambitious. She's very idealistic. She's very principled. She has a lot of passion for what she does. I'm jumping ahead a bit, but we definitely see her being a journalist. That's the stuff I always liked about her on the show, especially in those early seasons, her real determination.
But more than that, like I said, she's fun. She always had the best lines on the show. She's a very entertaining character. So yeah, it was a no-brainer.
This actually makes it sound pretty cool? He sounds like a legit Chloe fan anyway as I'm surprised they're introducing her as a reporter after even the show tried to skirt around that whole aspect of her character
But urgh at this part
On "Smallville," Jimmy and Chloe had a romantic relationship. Will that be explored in the co-feature?
Yes. Her and Jimmy have a history. That's all I say about that for now. But her and Jimmy definitely have a history...Here's what I'll say. Chloe's relationship with Jimmy is what drives the entire story, their history and the current status of their relationship. It is the impetus for everything that happens.
Did everyone just forget that Chloe was with Henry, not the real Jimmy?!
Maybe the history will STAY history, and she'll get to have the dignity of dumping him and not wanting him back. :P His description does sound promising, but I can't get my hopes too far up.
He does sound like he really is into Chloe's character and gets her, but yes, gah at the Chimmy connection. It's pointing more and more to them being paired up in some way, and seriously DNW
I'm surprised he talks so much about loving early season Chloe (and like I said, I do believe he's sincere there), and yet plans to pair her with Jimmy. He could just as easily have her as single and awesome, and still involved in the comic
And just to add that Here's what I'll say. Chloe's relationship with Jimmy is what drives the entire story, their history and the current status of their relationship. It is the impetus for everything that happens.
makes it sound like he thinks that makes a good teaser/will entirce the fans. But for all his joking about Chloe fans being hardcore, he never picked up on how unpopular Chimmy as a romantic couple were?! Seriously the writers joked in interviews about it, as did Allison Mack when she was asked about it. Much of fandom was screaming in outrage when it became clear that the engagement and wedding would go ahead. It's not exactly a secret that Chimmy never took off in popularity compared to any other Chloe ship
Pretty much. Having "Chimmy" drive the comic and her entrance is MASSIVE FAIL. Having that become DC Comics canon when there is so much more to Chloe's awesome is also fail. I just don't get DC at all.
