I don't get this trend of leaving icon posts open for two/three days, then flocking them, making public fic posts, then flocking them. It's so frustrating when I have fic saved in my LJ memories, only to find it's been flocked since when I want to reread it (this seems to happen particularly with Supernatural fandom for some reason).

What happened to the days of people locking personal posts only, and leaving fandom-related posts public. I miss them *sighs*

I don't like when they do that either.
Also I dislike that most coloring tutorials now are just PSD files and you have to join and then comment to get the password?? is this just so they get lots of comments for their community?? So a high comment count means they're a better icon maker? pfft.
Also large icon posts with like 20 fandoms but they all have less than 5 icons per fandom in their batch, I may have unlimited bandwidth but I'm not clicking for like just 3 icons.

Oh I find that very irritating. I tend to go look back several months at a time through icon communities and get frustrated when I come across so many locked posts. If you're that afraid someone will steal something, don't post anything on the internet!

This is why I save fic I want to read as PDFs. Of course this means I have over 1000 of the damn things...

The multi-fandom icon post thing annoys me too, which is why I tried to keep them out of [livejournal.com profile] marsters_daily (and put up with the abuse in return).

I agree!! It's so frustrating! When people do that for icons, I just don't even bother and move on to someone else's icons. There are so many good icon makers out there that I can be perfectly happy with ones that are easily available to everyone. But fic is another thing all together- there are some fics that I bookmark because I want to read them again, and I hate how often I come back later to find out they've been taken down or made private for 'personal reasons' or whatever the excuse of the day is.

Guh, I hate that.
Or even more annoying "the post will be locked in 24 hours". Excuse you, why don't you put a countdown as well?!
I still think the main reason behind that is to get more members in their communities. Bandwidth is usually used as an excuse, because "people hotlinked and now I *have* to do this!!11!", but most of the people who say that don't even seem to understand how so-called hotlinking works, and that they're the ones hotlinking when they crosspost all over (especially if they have a huuuge icon post + gazillion animations). *sigh*
Anyways, yes, it's a big pet peeve of mine. :)
That is why I added "no linking to locked posts", or at least leave them open for a week, as a rule in every com I maintain. It's nice to delete offenders if they don't unlock it after the warning. >:)

I haven't seen any locked fic yet. *knocks on wood*
It only happened with fic posted to one com, but they lock everything R/NC-17, so I just joined and solved the problem. :D What's the excuse behind locking that?

I was under the impression it was done to discourage hotlinking.

Is that not correct?

It's obnoxious to do that.

Ugh. Yes. I figure if they want to hide their icons, they don't want them used, so I don't even bother with locked icon communities.

Also, that's why I started a fic journal when I f'locked my journal. That way the fic is always public and I don't have to worry about it.

I think it's because icon-makers and fic-writers want people to JOIN their communities, so they leave their stuff public for a bit so people can get a taste and then lock them, so if you don't get it within that 2-day period, it's gone unless you join/watch. IDK. The concept baffles me too.

I know! It's annoying. I've noticed it mostly with icon posts. I've always saved fanfic on my computer when I want to re-read it, just in case it's taken down, but I've never noticed a lot of locked fics, except for certain RPS communities.
