‘The Good Place’ To End With Upcoming Season 4 On NBC’

NBC’s The Good Place is ending after its upcoming fourth season, creator/executive producer Michael Schur announced Friday night at the Television Academy in North Hollywood during a panel discussion dedicated to the critically-acclaimed comedy series

“After The Good Place was picked up for season two, the writing staff and I began to map out, as best we could, the trajectory of the show,” he said. “Given the ideas we wanted to explore, and the pace at which we wanted to present those ideas, I began to feel like four seasons – just over 50 episodes – was the right lifespan.”

Schur added that he was tempted to go beyond four seasons, but decided against it.

“At the end of the day, we don’t want to tread water just because the water is so warm and pleasant. As such, the upcoming fourth season will be our last,” he stated

I thought that it would probably end after a fourth or fifth season, so I can’t say that I’m that surprised. I love the show and the characters, but I can’t deny that last season felt like they were starting to spin their wheels a bit with how often they kept going over the same basic story of them all being rebooted, Chidi teaching them philosophy and them all learning to be better people, and Eleanor then being reminded of her love for him. I bet the cast are pretty bummed though, you can tell what a great time they had working together :(

I think season 4 will be a good way to resolve the show though with them all back in the fake good place, only with Eleanor the one in charge this time, it feels like everything has really come full circle

This article has an interview with Mike Schur discussing it more as well

I think four seasons is a great number to round off this show. I already felt like season three was lacking a bit compared to the others and this way they can end on their own terms.

I agree, season 3 was dragging for me a bit in the beginning/middle, although it did pick up more once they left earth, but still I definitely see what Mike Schur is saying in that it’s not a show like The Big Bang Theory or Friends where you can have multiple seasons, it’s got such a focused plot that you want to know when you’ve told your story and it’s time to end it

Something about S3 was off to me, but I still enjoyed the show. I think this is a good thing, especially with it ending on Schur's terms. It was not a show that could potentially go on forever (unlike B99) without repeating too much or simply getting boring. Four seasons is a solid number.

I like your idea for the ending! I thought they might all end up in the real Good Place (which is then a lot like the fake Good Place) after proving that the point system isn't working properly/the Bad Place is tampering with it.

Yeah it feels like more of a drama than a comedy in some ways with all of the plot twists being introduced, so I think it’s sensible of the creators to consider it to be a show with a certain lifespan.

I think that season 3 felt a bit off just because they were all back on earth lol, I liked season 3 more after they all died again and were travelling around the real good good place and whoever else, but to me it felt completely unrealistic for them all to meet up in Australia and devote their life’s to Chidi’s philosophy class simply because they wanted to become better people. Maybe at a stretch Eleanor might do that, but Jason and Tahani as well??! I don’t think that concept worked on earth the same way that it did when they knew that they were in the real afterlife and were trying to figure out where they stood as people

Probably the finale (which is apparently going to be an hour long!) will see them all get into the real good place I agree

Thinking back, I also liked the season a lot more after they left earth. Even though I like Eleanor/Chidi, the season spent too much time on their relationship. And you're right, that felt a lot more like a drama than a comedy show!

I think that I rooted for Eleanor/Chidi in the first season the most, once they actually got together it felt kind of anticlimactic with how much the show clearly wanted to push them as this epic love story, and I just don’t really feel the chemistry there. They are cute together and they have their moments, but I feel like the writing sets them up to be a more passionate relationship than actually comes across onscreen, if anything I think that they work better as supportive friends who always one another’s back idk

Exactly! I like them, but I don't love them. And you're completely right, they did not feel as epic as the show wanted them to be. There was not enough build-up for that or at least it didn't really fit the show's own canon, especially in S3. They really should have stayed friends during the last season, but I am glad that Simone was never turned into the bad guy and Eleanor got along with her.

Meh... I was hoping for at least 5 seasons as that seems to be where most of my shows are ending... like Killjoys, iZOMBiE, Jane the Virgin and even Lucifer, so I had hoped that maybe TGP would get at least 5 Seasons too, but at least they can end it the way they want to end it =D

When season 4 was first announced with no mention of it being the final season, I did think that there would be a fifth season as well, but honestly I can’t say that I’m that upset either at hearing that this fourth season will be it. It is a show where I love the characters and it is a really fun concept, but they do kind of keep going over the same thing again and again with rebooting and learning to be good people all over again, so I have a feeling that a fifth season would probably have stretched things out a bit too much. I like that this way they’re going to finish the show back where they started in the fake good place, and bring things full circle with Eleanor being the one to run the experiment and manoeuvre the humans this time

I haven't watched the latest season yet, but I figured it'd only be so long before they run out of steam given the premise of the show. There's only so far things can go and they can only erase everyone's memories so many times before we're all like, okay. So we're doing this again lmao. That said, I like when shows decide to end vs going on for 15 seasons when they ran out of steam long before the end.

Yeah I do think it was the right decision to end it because, while granted they are big issues that they’re dealing with, it’s still kind of going over the same ideas again and again on whether a person can improve and choose to be good, and I think that the characters have been rebooted enough times at this point to get the message across.

It’s different from a lot of other sitcoms which can follow the characters ongoing journeys and relationships, keeping our interest that way, whereas the whole concept behind TGP is of rebooting them so that they can reconnect and learn the same lessons again, and that’s not really something that you can play with too many times without the risk of the audience getting bored

I think it's good that the show is ending the way they want it instead of letting it go for seasons and seasons. I know some might want to go on for longer, but four seasons is probably a good place to end things, especially with how the story seems to be going.

It does seem like the common sentiment from nearly everyone is that it probably is time to start bringing the show to a close, although it will be missed, and I’m sure that’s the sort of response that they were hoping for. It’s always nice when a creator can end a show on their own terms, and not be either rushed into wrapping things up early, or forced to go on for longer then they had planned

I'm sad the show is ending, but glad that they've got an ending in mind, and are telling the story they want to tell.

Now my only question is what is the ending going to be, because this is a show that has always surprised me and kept me guessing.

My immediate guess was that they all get into the real Good Place for the end, it feels like it kind of has to end that way after everything that they’ve been through, but I wonder if the writers will consider that to be too obvious and expected?

At the very least, they have to reset the cosmic scale to where SOMEONE is getting into the Good Place. They have to fix the system somehow. I've also seen the theory that they will end up alive again, though maybe that's just as predictable since they were already sent back to Earth once.

I haven't finished the 3rd season yet. I like the show, but this feels probably like a good idea since the premise does lend itself to a limited shelf life.

It does feel like the right time, I would far rather have just four great seasons to rewatch, instead of a show that gets dragged on past its prime

I think it's a good place to end. Ha. They can't keep the concept going forever, and this will let them go out on a high.

It's time. I loved the first season but since the end of season two, I've only been watching to keep my husband company.

I will miss watching the actors (especially Ted Danson and Kristen Bell!), but I know what you mean, it does feel like a show that works best with a limited run of episodes, otherwise it will just be going over the same basic ideas again and again

Same, not every show gets the chance too :) Hopefully it’s going to be an epic ending!
