‘The Good Place’ To End With Upcoming Season 4 On NBC’
NBC’s The Good Place is ending after its upcoming fourth season, creator/executive producer Michael Schur announced Friday night at the Television Academy in North Hollywood during a panel discussion dedicated to the critically-acclaimed comedy series
“After The Good Place was picked up for season two, the writing staff and I began to map out, as best we could, the trajectory of the show,” he said. “Given the ideas we wanted to explore, and the pace at which we wanted to present those ideas, I began to feel like four seasons – just over 50 episodes – was the right lifespan.”
Schur added that he was tempted to go beyond four seasons, but decided against it.
“At the end of the day, we don’t want to tread water just because the water is so warm and pleasant. As such, the upcoming fourth season will be our last,” he stated
I thought that it would probably end after a fourth or fifth season, so I can’t say that I’m that surprised. I love the show and the characters, but I can’t deny that last season felt like they were starting to spin their wheels a bit with how often they kept going over the same basic story of them all being rebooted, Chidi teaching them philosophy and them all learning to be better people, and Eleanor then being reminded of her love for him. I bet the cast are pretty bummed though, you can tell what a great time they had working together :(
I think season 4 will be a good way to resolve the show though with them all back in the fake good place, only with Eleanor the one in charge this time, it feels like everything has really come full circle
This article has an interview with Mike Schur discussing it more as well

Date: 2019-06-08 12:42 pm (UTC)I like your idea for the ending! I thought they might all end up in the real Good Place (which is then a lot like the fake Good Place) after proving that the point system isn't working properly/the Bad Place is tampering with it.

Date: 2019-06-08 12:51 pm (UTC)I think that season 3 felt a bit off just because they were all back on earth lol, I liked season 3 more after they all died again and were travelling around the real good good place and whoever else, but to me it felt completely unrealistic for them all to meet up in Australia and devote their life’s to Chidi’s philosophy class simply because they wanted to become better people. Maybe at a stretch Eleanor might do that, but Jason and Tahani as well??! I don’t think that concept worked on earth the same way that it did when they knew that they were in the real afterlife and were trying to figure out where they stood as people
Probably the finale (which is apparently going to be an hour long!) will see them all get into the real good place I agree

Date: 2019-06-08 04:11 pm (UTC)It’s different from a lot of other sitcoms which can follow the characters ongoing journeys and relationships, keeping our interest that way, whereas the whole concept behind TGP is of rebooting them so that they can reconnect and learn the same lessons again, and that’s not really something that you can play with too many times without the risk of the audience getting bored
