Which TV shows did you start watching in 2018?

Feud, Sharp Objects, Peaky Blinders, Killing Eve, and The Haunting Of Hill House. All brilliant shows that had me totally enthralled <3 I don’t think I said anything about Killing Eve or Peaky Blinders at the time though actually, but I really want to start using my LJ more next year and keep it up to date with what I’m currently watching. I may rewatch some of them next year anyway and talk about them then, these shorter seasons of 8 or so episodes make binge-watching so much easier!

Which TV shows did you let go of in 2018?

I’m not sure if I’ve quit all of them for good or not, but at the moment I don’t have any plans to keep up with iZombie, Empire, Wentworth, Suits, or Doctor Who. It used to be a struggle for me to quit shows that I had been invested in, but there’s so many promising shows being brought out by streaming services now that it makes it really hard to stay motivated for a season of tv that you’re not that excited for, and have to force yourself to keep pushing through episodes. I probably will pick up Suits and Doctor Who again at some point though...

And The Americans and The X-Files both ended this year, as well as the premature cancellation of Daredevil :(

Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2018? Why?

The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina was one that I was intrigued by, but then ended up dropping after the fourth episode because I found it all a bit slow. And I ended up dropping out halfway through The Handmaids Tale just because I had problems with my Internet connection, and by the time I was back online again they had already taken episode 205 down 🙄 I’m hopefully going to catch up on that sometime though if C4 ever get it back up!

Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2019?

Too many! I just renewed my Amazon Prime and they have quite a few interesting shows. At the moment Runaways, Homecoming, Castle Rock, The Good Fight, Lucifer, and Person Of Interest are all on my watch list. Ooh and seasons 1-12 of Supernatural are on there as well I recently discovered, so I want this to finally be the year for me to catch up with seasons 10-12. And I noticed they have Buffy in HD, so I’m really tempted to have a Buffy rewatch this year as well. I know that fans hate the changes and how the lighting has been messed up etc, but truthfully I can’t deny that I find that clear picture super tempting when I’m skimming through season 2 episodes to admire the difference. Willow running through the woods in Phases say, or Buffy and Spike’s confrontation in the darkened hallways in School Hard, WOW it all looks soooo much clearer than the grainy and fuzzy old video tape kind of quality that I have on my DVDs.

And with Netflix I’m interested in checking out the new Black Mirror episode, You, Maniac, The Alienist, The Crown, and the second season of The Sinner

And I’m thinking of checking out the first couple of episodes of The Perfectionists which is the follow-up to Pretty Little Lies, but I’m not sure if it’s going to be airing in the U.K. or not? Fingers crossed that Netflix pick it up!

Which TV show impressed you least in 2018?

iZombie got pretty boring and ridiculous with how radically the brains change Liv’s personality now, I dropped out early in season 4

Which TV show do you think you might let go of in 2019 unless things significantly improve?

Well I kind of already did lol with the shows that weren’t holding my attention. Otherwise I consider myself to be currently following The Good Place, The Big Bang Theory, Black Mirror, Veronica Mars, Big Little Lies, Mindhunters, The Handmaids Tale, Killing Eve, The Marvelous Mrs.Maisel, and Peaky Blinders, and right now I have no interest in quitting any of them

Which TV shows do you think you’ll never let go of no matter how crappy they get?

The X-Files honestly, just so long as a revival brings back both Mulder and Scully, I am there 😳😳

Your fandom boyfriend of the year?

As ever I seem to have a thing for the evil characters, so umm Thomas Shelby from Peaky Blinders

Your fandom girlfriend of the year?

And Villanelle from Killing Eve

Your favorite film you watched this year?

I haven’t watched a lot of movies this year at all really, but the one to make the biggest impression on me was probably I, Tonya

Your favorite book read this year?

My Year In Books I’m pleased that I more than met my target with 35 out of 30 books this year, and The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue is the one that stands out the most. It’s about a bisexual teenage Lord in the 1700’s and all of his exploits on his Grand Tour Of Europe, all while dealing with a crush on his best friend Percy. Monty’s narration is just really fun, and it’s super shippy too, it felt a bit like reading a favourite fanfic in book form XD

I also loved Monsters of the Week: The Complete Critical Companion to The X-Files, that gives you a complete overview of the entire series up to season 11, and reviews all of the episodes and movies

Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?

I really like Take That’s new album, Odyssey, love those guys <3

Your favorite TV show(s) of the year?

Sharp Objects, Peaky Blinders, Killing Eve, and The Haunting Of Hill House

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?

Losing Daredevil. It’s even more frustrating when season 3 was so strong, it was clearly setting up Bullseye for the following season, and there was just no justifiable reason to cancel it. I was really hoping to see Elektra again too, and get some closure with her and Matt :(

Your biggest squee moment of the year?

Veronica Mars returning for a new miniseries!!!

The most missed of your old fandoms?

Maybe Hannibal? It’s starting to hit me that it’s probably not going to be coming for any more at this point, and I was quite hopeful last year when Bryan Fuller was talking about them now having the rights to Clarice, having talks etc, but that was well over a year ago now...There still hasn’t been any progress that we’ve heard of, so I’ll keep my hopes up for a surprise announcement still, but I’m not holding my breath :sighs:

And Happy New Year, I hope that everyone who is celebrating has a good one :D

Person of Interest is one of my favorite TV shows. I hope you'll enjoy it :)

I agree about iZombie. I have no idea why they changed the effect of eating brains after S2. I do still enjoy the show, but I don't love it like I did during S1 and 2.

The 11th season of The X-Files was a lot better than S10 which had some really bad writing. After finishing Babylon, I couldn't believe what I just watched.

Netflix canceling Daredevil really hurt. S3 was so good and I was really looking forward to more Bullseye.

Happy New Year!

Person of Interest is one of my favorite TV shows

To be honest it’s only the 23 episode seasons that are making me a little wary of jumping straight in at the moment! I’m most drawn to checking out the shows with ten episodes or less first, so POI isn’t at the top of my list lol, but I’m definitely interested in trying to get around to it this year if I can and seeing what I think of it

The 11th season of The X-Files was a lot better than S10 which had some really bad writing. After finishing Babylon, I couldn't believe what I just watched.

Definitely better than season 10 at least! There was only one episode that I outright loved that year (the Darin Morgan episode of course), and then Home Again was pretty good, but it still didn’t feel like enough for a revival series. I was much happier with season 11 in terms of the MotW episodes, I think it’s an underrated one by the fans actually, there are some decent episodes in there. If only Chris Carter didn’t feel the need to make the mythology more of an insulting mess than ever....

Killing Eve was fabulous, wasn't it? I already knew & loved Sandra Oh and Fiona Shaw but Jodie Comer was a revelation!

Not sure if you've heard the CBC podcast series on Nxivm but I've been listening all day and it's riveting (CBC is Canada's equivalent to BBC)

There are so many shows I'd love to get into that are on your list like You and Peaky Blinders (I loooooove Cillian Murphy but I've always been squeamish about how violent the show might be.) I still really like iZombie. I think there was a slight drop in quality in season 4, but I still find it vastly more tolerable than most CW shows and definitely want to see it through with the final season coming up.

I’d absolutely recommend it! I’m such a sucker for those kind of unofficial books for reviewing episodes, and it was great to discover that it was completely up to date and also covers the revival series. It’s actually surprisingly kind on it as well, the one season they are completely dismissive of is season 9, but otherwise there’s generally the argument that seasons 6, 8, 10, and 11 are all better then their reputation (well outside of the mythology at least!)

I was quite amused by some of the reader reviews though, some people got so precious about the authors not praising every single episode, and it’s like really? I love the show, but there were stinkers right from the beginning with The Jersey Devil, Space, Fire! You can still be a fan while acknowledging that?

The violence does get pretty graphic frankly, I love the show, but it might not be for you if you get squeamish at that type of stuff :/

And I’m bummed at how fast I lost interest in iZombie, I used to find it a really fun show and fandom, but honestly I’ve been losing interest since season 3. I thought the second season was fantastic and the arc really kept me gripped, but ever since they dropped back to 13 episode seasons I've found myself struggling to get through most of the episodes. I’m just not that into the one-off cases and personalities I guess, maybe the novelty just wore off for me

Ah yes, I also let go of Suits.

As far as I know, Fuller was in rights talks, not that he had the rights to Clarice now. Admittedly, I could have missed something. The rights to the TV show itself were tied up for two years after the finale date on NBC, and they definitely have the rights back to that now.

I’ve only caught up to the first half of season 6, so I keep thinking that I should at least finish season 6 and see Mike and Rachel’s departures, but yeah I don’t feel very inspired at the moment. For me Suits is one of those shows that has just gone on too long, I find it bizarre that they’re still pushing on without Mike

And I don’t remember all of the details with Hannibal now admittedly, but it seemed like there were talks being teased in 2017 and that things were about to progess, especially with Bryan Fuller being available again after American Gods fell through for him, but then idk I would have expected an announcement by now if anything came of those talks? I still hold out hope for more someday in the future, but it doesn’t sound like there’s any immediate plans at the moment

Honestly, you're not missing much on Suits. You know Mike and Rachel are going to leave, and it's pretty much exactly what you can imagine. And of course Jessica has already left for her own spinoff, which I have NO interest in. Her leaving last season already made the show feel weaker.

I find it bizarre that they’re still pushing on without Mike

This, basically. For me, the show was Mike and Harvey. And well, I'm not that interested in Harvey on his own.

I was intrigued by The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina when it was first announced, but the more it started to become like Riverdale just on a Netflix budget the less I was inclined to watch. And based on the things I've seen and heard, I'm not really missing much since nothing really interesting happens? idk :/

Losing not just Daredevil, but Netflix just canceling their Marvel lineup is definitely the biggest disappointment of the entire year when it comes to shows. It's probably the worst business decision Netflix has ever made, imho. It benefits nobody, and it's just a lose-lose situation no matter how you spin it. And the fact that it blindsided everyone is even more heartbreaking. :(

I agree about Killing Eve. Loved it and fell hard for Eve/Villanelle.

At this point I worry about Bryan Fuller who has been fired/left four or more projects. One was with Anne Rice so that doesn't count. Because Rice..well. I've given up hope on Hannibal the show, but the ending was perfect and we can always imagine they lived and that Clarice came along.

I loved Sabrina, but that's me. I kinda love the cheesy Riverdale.

I gave up on izombie too. Couldn't see the show I loved anymore in it.

Totally the same for me, it was the two leads together and how they balanced once another out that drew me to the show. I love Harvey, but watching with just him seems like it would be a very different show. (Oh and I've just realised that I meant season 7 actually, not season 6 lol). I can scarcely believe that they’re now in their eighth season and counting!

Yeah I think that maybe I’m just not the target demo for the show, it does feel a bit CW’ish to me, I especially don’t care about the scenes with her school friends. Idk I felt like they really over hyped how dark it was too. Obviously it isn’t an outright sitcom like the old 90’s series was, but lol saying Hail Satan a lot doesn’t exactly make it some dark and gritty reboot either

And I totally agree, it’s really frustrating since people have come out and said that Marvel were blindsided by it all too and it was totally Netflix’s decisions, I just don’t understand why they couldn’t at least give the Daredevil writers the heads up and let them plan out one final season? These kind of arbitrary cancellations are not what we used to expect from Netflix, but frustringly it seems to be happening more and more lately with their shows

Yeah, exactly. I know that the CW was originally wanting do the show before Netflix snagged it up, but I just feel like The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina could've been interesting had they separated themselves from the Riverdale-esque factor and just been its own thing. Less teenyboppery and more mature in tone and writing. Such a wasted opportunity, imho.

I feels like a stab in the back by Netflix, in a way, because they didn't consult the creators behind these shows about the possible decision. I mean, Netflix cancelling things on a whim isn't new for them (as unfortunate and ridiculous as that is), but this is their Marvel lineup which is incredibly popular and successful. The people behind these shows relied on Netflix for the support. I know that the nature of the industry isn't fair, but it's still incredibly disrespectful to completely cancel them without talking about it beforehand to allow there to have been some kind of way to wrap things up. Now these shows will go on unfinished. And if it's true that Marvel is blindsided by this as well, then it's all on Netflix. They done fucked up big time on this one.

(In truth, these streaming wars -- companies trying to make their own streaming services and competing against each other for property -- is such a bad idea, and it's causing more harm than good, just as everyone predicted it would.)

I mean... "iZOMBiE" is in it's last season anyway, and that's the main reason I'm sticking with it, but if it ends with Liv/Major being endgame (which it most likely will), I'll be mad as hell... oh well...

I really like Take That’s new album, Odyssey, love those guys <3

I was never a huge Take That Fan when I was younger (like when they got famous the "first time"), but I did enjoy some of their songs and loved "Willowen", and I loved their reunion when they were 5 again. I'm not sure I'm interested in only 3 of them as Mark and Robbie were always the biggest draw for me and their deep friendship, and yeah... I love Mark Owen and his voice. "Ask him to" is one of my alltime favorite songs... it's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard... but it was from his solo time...

For me the biggest problems of iZombie in season 3 and then season 4 (where I stopped watching too) were a) not using their best character - Ravi - as he should have been used b) the brains taken over Liv's personality completely and even worse, the brains were no fun anymore and c) they forgot how funny Major could be

I'm still so angry about Daredevil. And now they are releasing The Punisher in a few weeks without any promotion so it couldn't be more obvious that it's already cancelled and Netflix doesn't give a shit about it anymore :/

I was hoping that Bryan Fuller would be ready to pick up Hannibal again once he was free from his other commitments, Hannibal does seem to be one of the few projects that he stuck with and still seems very passionate about, but I’m not sure if getting more is still a strong possibility or not any more as it’s been so long now since the third season. I am happy with the third season finale if that’s the only ending we get though

That’s the biggest issue I have with it as well, it seems like Netflix only decided to cancel at the very last minute as they let the writers go as plotting out half of the fourth season before suddenly pulling the plug. They could have at least told the people working on the show in advance if a season was going to be the last one, that gives the actors a chance to say proper goodbyes on set, as well as giving the writers a chance to wrap everything up properly. The way they handled it instead feels very disrespectful to the people working on the show

I feel like they got a bit stuck on ideas for new brains after the first two seasons lol, they had some great combinations in the beginning, but it did seem like they started running out of steam after that. Everything became a bit more heightened and played for wacky comedy later on, whereas they had some quite interesting and moving cases originally

And Netflix have really disappointed me with how they have handled Daredevil, I expected more of them than to just act like a typical network and cancel a bunch of shows out of the blue :(

I think the problem now is that we're literally drowning in things to consume? Like before there was only so many shows that were worth checking out, but now there's stuff left and right that everyone's raving about, and no one has the time to keep up with everything.

Ugh, I'm still irked that we're getting not one, but two seasons of the Punisher and no Elektra spinoff. Not anything against the Punisher, since it was a solid season and show, but come on. I wanted to see more Elektra.

Yeah, I've heard rumblings about Fuller talking about Clarice? But that was it, but given that he's stepped away from American Gods, I guess that frees him up for another Hannibal sequel?

Happy 2019!

I feel exactly the same way, with Netflix especially there are so many shows that sound right up my street and that I definitely want to check out, but so many nights I end up feeling overwhelmed and just bingewatching old comedy episodes instead. For some reason starting a new tv show feels like this exhausting commitment in a way now, even though these are shows that do interest me in the descriptions, but there’s just sooo many to check out that I don’t really know where to begin *g*

And I definitely wanted more Elektra :( She was such a big part of Daredevil season 2 and The Defenders that it just doesn’t feel right to end her story there with no closure. I read that the actress wasn’t able to return for the third season because she was pregnant, but I suspect that Elektra did factor in to the season 4 that they were already starting to plan out 😢

And I thought that Fuller being freed up for Hannibal was a good possibility, but it was Oct 2017 I think when you first heard about talks beginning, so idk all I can really take from that is that they didn’t progress that far in the end? I know that Mads always seems very busy though, so I suppose that actor availability is probably still a big issue as well...

...I was definitely having to turn away from the screen a lot when the anticipation of a scare was getting to be too much! And it was definitely really emotional, I ended up caring about the family so much....
This was me for the whole series, lol. XD
I had to cry at the end so, so much. But I wouldn't watch it again. I can't deal with creepy things anymore.

Me, too! :D
I finished The Mist (not good), watching 3% right now (not bad) and a German Series about a famous Hospital "Charite" (very good)!

I think I could watch it again now that I know when the scary bits are about to happen, it was the not knowing that was getting me really tense XD
