I just finished watching the second season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel recently on Amazon. I’m not sure how many on my flist are watching this one though (you really should be!), at the moment it very much feels like a show that the critics adore, but the general public never watch :( In spite of all the awards attention, it’s not even Amazon’s most binged shows of the year. It’s really a shame because it’s such a beautiful show, and the dialogue is soooo witty and great. Just the pilot is perfect and should be enough to hook anyone, and then I ended up falling in love with season 2 even more

I have to say that the secondhand embarrassment was too much for me though when Midge started performing at her friends wedding in the third episode, I had to cover my face after she started joking about how she didn’t have sex with the priest. I get what they were going for with Midge getting so carried away with the stand up that she’s starting to lose her sense of what’s socially appropriate, but I don’t entirely buy it when she’s still very prim and particular in her everyday life, it felt like the writing turned her into too much of a cartoon there almost

Midge’s parents were the cutest though when they reconnected in Paris, and then such awesome teamwork at the university after they threatened to kick her out <3 I also absolutely loved the Catskills episodes, the cheesy holiday camp reminded me so much of Dirty Dancing!

Not sure yet what I think about the ending though, on one hand it was clearly more about Midge choosing to go for it with her comedy career, but on the other hand I do feel a bit uneasy at how attached the writers seems to be to Joel’s character. It’s strange to me how they've given interviews talking about how Midge was never happier than when she was with Joel etc, because I don’t feel like that’s what they’re showing on screen at all? If anything she spends a little while hesitating over his proposal in the flashback until he pulls out the grand gesture, whereas she says yes right away and is over the moon when she gets the chance to go on tour with her comedy routine. It comes across to me that the husband and the kids were more something that she felt she should have as part of the perfect life, but comedy is what she is truly passionate about. And again with Benjamin, she seemed more excited about planning then wedding then she did about the man himself! And also her lack of interest in being a mother is almost a running joke. So yeah some of the bts interviews feel a little strange to me, because I feel like what they’re showing on screen is Midge feeling happier and more excited than ever now that she has found her calling in life and broken out of what society always told her that she should do, but then you get the creators saying that oh but of course she will forever miss that life that she once had with Joel as that was when she was at her happiest??

And honestly if I can be shallow for a minute, I feel like Amy is setting Joel up as a kind of Christopher figure (Gilmore Girls reference!), but the actor is really not handsome or charismatic enough to pull it off and let the audience in on what Midge sees in him. On paper I get that Joel is the man that she loves and still finds herself pulled towards, but it doesn’t really come across for me when the two of them are on screen together

If I ship her with anyone in fact it’s Lenny Bruce, now that is a sexy man! :P Those two have amazing chemistry and banter, and that sequence of Midge watching his routine singing about how alone he is was really poignant. It’s interesting to see how similar it is to the real Lenny Bruce appearance actually, they lifted his singing directly from the real version

Of course the central relationship of the show really is Midge and Suzy though, and I absolutely love their friendship and how close they are, in spite of being complete opposites. Major aww to how awkward Suzy gets when Midge gives her the ‘friendship bracelet’! Seeing them on tour together with Midge struggling with the crappy motels was great too. I noticed they specifically dropped hints there that Suzy has never had an intimate relationship with anyone, and I really hope that the writers develop her character more in season 3. At least we meet her family in season 2, but it still feels like we don’t know enough about her really
