I read an article with them saying that they basically decided to avoid the subject of race because they wanted to keep things diverse on-screen, although I would have thought that they could still have kept it diverse with the flashbacks and with the casting of Moira, but without avoiding the subject of race all together? For instance instead of having Moira as just another handmaid, maybe they could have adjusted her story slightly in the present-day, following her as she gets shipped out to the colonies...
