Yeah I was surprised when KW talked about how that's how he wanted to end it, and they ultimately decided they didn't have the time without Nina, but I wonder if Julie and the other writers were just humouring him there? I'm a big Stefan shipper, and I'm really annoyed at how the show ended up completely dismissing their supposed epic love story in favour of Delena, but the fact is that they did change Elena's feelings for Stefan, and they did show Stefan moving on, so I don't see how it would have been possible to come back from that at this point? Even human Elena was still into Damon only back in late season 6, so it would have been a pretty random choice to suddenly switch the triangle like that after how preoccupied the show has been with Delena for the last four years
Mind you I did like a fake spoiler I read somewhere of how human Stefan and Elena both end up having their memories wiped, and meeting again as humans in the last moments of the show, I think that could have been a pretty bittersweet way of bringing things full circle, but idk. It would have been hard to convince the audience of the merits of that ending after so many years of telling us that Delena is the love story of the show, most of the viewers would have ended up feeling cheated I think, and it would have left Damon without much of an ending after he was so wrapped up in Elena and seeing her again. Actually I wouldn't have been opposed to Damon/Bonnie in season 7, but it pretty much always was Damon/Elena still, so again I don't see how else you could have ended the show for them by then :shrugs:
