My biggest issue with Damon is the idea of playing him as a romantic lead and an ally for the main characters despite the fact that they never really gave him a redemption arc. He's shown very little remorse for any of the awful things he's done. And the fact that we got to season 5 and he was still lashing out by torturing/murdering people whenever Elena hurt his feelings also doesn't say much for him.
I honestly wouldn't care if the show still painted him as a villain but he really hasn't been written that way since early season 1. Damon made a great villain but once they started writing away from that, I started having issues with him.
Season 6 was the first time I can remember where he didn't randomly lash out and go on a killing spree just because Elena hurt him. I expected him to after he learned she erased her memories of him, but he didn't. So finally I thought we were getting some character growth with him but now it looks like they're going back on that for season 7.
