Episode 616 of The Vampire Diaries was sooo good, A+ directing from Ian, especially that final shot! This is shaping up to be one of my favourite seasons yet :D

LOVED humanity free Caroline so much, she was so ruthless and practical that she was somehow way more menacing then the way that Damon and Stefan lose control and lash out at people when they lose their humanity, maybe because she still felt like she was in control of herself and her reactions? Her compulsion of Liam brought back some fairly chilling reminders of Damon's casual abuse of Caroline in season 1, especially when she told Liam how boring he was and compelled him to do whatever she says, while Stefan is fretting over her using Liam as a human bloodbag

It was kind of ironic though that Caroline calls Elena out on always making everything about herself, yet Elena has felt increasingly irrelevant to the centre of the action for a while now, she basically had no real storyline going on in this episode other than reacting to her friends...

The surgery scenes of Liam being forced to cut Sarah were really creepy and horrific :shudders: I also felt bad for Liam when Elena broke his wrists after she found Sarah, isn't that going to completely mess up his future career as a surgeon??? None of it was his fault, so I thought that Elena could have just as easily knocked him out of the way with her vampire strength, even knocked him out, but breaking both his wrists seemed unduly harsh on top of everything else :(

Oh and Kat Graham's acting is kicking ass this season, really impressed at how powerful the storyline dealing with Bonnie's PTSD is. And Bonnie and Damon's phone call at the rave was incredibly cute, I hope their new friendship isn't going to be messed-up for too long :/ Really I don't get why he couldn't have just explained to Bonnie about her seeing Kai again being the only way to find out about his Mother, she probably would still have said no (as she had every right to do obviously), but just springing Kai on her as a surprise seemed like the worst possible choice! It did lead to a fabulous confrontation between Bonnie and Damon though. And Kai and his "feelings are awkward" is still a lot of fun, I may wrong!ship him and Bonnie a teensy bit :hides:

I am a bit confused at where they're going with Damon and Stefan's Mother being a ripper, I'm prepared to withhold judgement for the moment, but that just seems like kind of a random choice to me? And I don't know why the Coven wouldn't have just killed her, unless she was an original vampire and particularly powerful/special, why the need to create a prison world to trap her in?

And finally I can't WAIT to see Stefan and Caroline together with their humanity switched off, very Bonnie and Clyde I hope :D My only question is that couldn't Stefan have just faked Caroline and played at being emotionless, Angelus could always pull a perfect Angelus impression out when needed on Buffy and Angel, so I'm not totally clear on why Stefan had to turn for real? Caroline would have no real way of knowing other than how Stefan was behaving, so why not just act like an emotionless dick until Elena found Sarah and Liam?

And some surprisingly (or maybe not lol, I haven't been keeping up with his interviews recently?) blunt words from Ian on the show ‘The Vampire Diaries’: Ian Somerhalder Spills On Bamon, ‘Twilight’ Digs And Directing

"they were on schedule to write a good episode, and they did...seasons one and two of this show were the best. That’s when Kevin [Williamson] and Julie [Plec] were still writing together, and Marcos Siega was still with us. He was our supervising producer, who pushed for depth and darkness, and scary. So I was hoping that this [episode] could be reminiscent of that...And actually, probably one of the reasons why you don’t see Bonnie and Damon together very much is because I don’t think that the powers that be want there to be much of a Damon and Bonnie storyline, or chemistry, because then it takes away from what I guess is supposed to be, or what people think is supposed to be, which is this whole Damon and Elena thing"

I'm feeling kind of bad for Caroline Dries to be honest, it must suck to have one of your lead actors publically saying that the show was never as good without the original show runners! I know that a lot of fans say the same thing, but when it's one of the actors throwing shade about how the writers were on schedule to write a good episode, that must sting a little bit...And hmm has it been confirmed yet if it's Nina or Ian leaving after this season? Because Ian sounds really over the show in those quotes, but then I also keep getting the sense that the show is making Elena more and more irrelevant and gearing up to write her out of the next season?

I appreciate when an actor calls out a specific plot and gives well-reasoned opinions on why it doesn't work, but with all due respect to Ian, the interview with him came across to me as general dissatisfaction on how it was better when Kevin and Julie were still around, as a writer or show runner on the current show I wouldnt know how to take that because it just seems like he's a little fed up with the show in general and wants people to know that?

Plenty of fans agree with him I'm sure, but I think there can tend to be a lot of nostalgic for the good old days on television shows, just making comments about how it was better when we had these people working on the show doesn't seem super helpful to the people that he's currently working with. I'm sure that everything did feel fresher and more fun when Ian was playing Damon for the first time in early season 1, but no show runner can ever bring that time back for him, even if Kevin Williamson himself returned to the show
