It's been really noticeable this season that Elena hasn't had a lot to do IMO, especially compared to how much seasons 1-4 focused on Elena. It could be unintentional I suppose, they were focusing on Elena more in relation to Damon and the love story in season 5 as well, rather than keeping her as the protagonist in her own right and making her a bigger part of the central arc, but more and more I do get the sense that she's starting to feel a bit irrelevant
I think that they could make it work if they still had Stefan and Damon, as well as Caroline and Bonnie as their female leads, but it would definitely have a different feel about it, and I suppose that they would lose a big chunk of their viewership without the Delena ship. Hopefully they can get either Nina or Ian signed as recurring at least, whichever one of them doesn't want to sign on as a regular, if they can scatter a few appearances of them through the season then that would work better
