In this show, morals is replaced with Elena. Elena is a vampire, so vampires are good (Enzo included *rolls eyes very, very hard*) and vampire hunters are evil. I feel like it's especially bad this season, but from what you say, it was there all along (maybe not as visible and frustrating as right now).
