It just all feels a little too calculated to me, like the writers are desperately trying to replicate what the fans liked about Damon's banter, about Damon/Alaric's friendship, even Klaus/Caroline. I did like his character when we first introduced to him, but it feels like a little too much thought then went into how they could make him a regular and insert him into the other characters lives. The whole bromance with Damon was way too sudden for me, and it just felt forced when he was fighting so desperately to overcome compulsion for Damon last season. I don't know, maybe the difference also is that him and Damon bonded more in those years that we didn't see as much of, so it feels less organic then say the friendship with Alaric where viewers watched them gradually growing closer
