I've just wasted way too much time on http://actualteenadultteen.tumblr.com/ lol, they put together a picture of an actor playing 16 or 17 alongside a picture of what they actually looked like when they were were that age. It's so weird to see Hollywood's example of what passes for teenage in tv and film










I always thought Sarah and Alyson passed okay actually (well Sarah was only 2 or 3 years older than the part anyway), but Nicky and Charisma were ridiculously obvious when they were both close to 30 and still playing 16/17 wtf. And Joss did hire an actual teenager for the part of Kendra unusually, but Bianca Lawson is 31 in the second pic and still playing a teenager...

Sometimes when they hire 25 year olds to play teens, and then 35-40 year olds to play their parents, I get confused and have to stop myself from reading the parents as older siblings . . .

And, holy cow, VK looked like a girl! (And given his current look on Mad Men http://wpc.4d27.edgecastcdn.net/004D27/2013/MadMen/MadStyleS6E11/Mad+Style+S6E11+24.jpg... a guy who probably wishes he had some of his hair back)

And the hilarious part of what SMG looked like at 16 (while playing Kendal on AMC) is that after AMC got called out by the fans as a teenaged Kendal being used as a device to de-age Erica Kane they had to age adjust Kendal upward, to the only plausible age for the character given that Erica had to have given birth to Kendal prior to the show being on air. End result, at 16 SMG was playing 21 year old character!)

In The Vampires Diaries the actress playing Aunt Jenna was actually younger than the actor portraying the 15 year old she was meant to be guardian too...

And I can understand going up to 19 or 20 when selecting for a teenage role, but I draw the line at an actor playing teenage when they're closer to 30 than 20 lol

Hee I heard that! It's so messed up when an actress is playing the true age for once, and it still has to be adjusted *g* Other Buffy actors playing their correct age were Michelle as Dawn of course, although that did result in the writers treating the character as younger than being 14 and 15 really warranted. And Eliza was actually 17 when she was playing Faith and had to be legally emancipated so she could work the hours on-set. I always feel like that's something people forgot about Eliza compared to Michelle though, maybe because she came off as quite mature compared to most 17 year olds?

Bob made a pass at VK's character.

Bob had suggested a male nurse for VK's character increasingly senile mom. Senile mom had started talking about how in love whe was with the male nurse. VK's character called Bob into his office to have a hissyfit about the nurse, and Bob basically said the male nurse didn't swing that way. Then Bob intimated that he was in love... and made a move on VK.

She just doesn't seem to age like us mortal folk *g* Even on Buffy it was only during season 3 that I felt like her being more than 10 years older than the part started to stand out, in seasons 1 and 2 she didn't look significantly older than a lot of slightly older actresses passing for high school girls. And then on VM she was playing 25 when she was around 35 in reality....There's also a clip of her on YouTube when she played a 14 or 15 year old boys girlfriend on Baywatch when she was in her mid 20's

I always wondered if they got a new director of photography in S3. That year, I didn't really buy any of them as high schoolers. I don't know if it was the change in lighting styles, the tans or the clothing choices, but they all looked older than the college years sometimes.

I believe for the first two seasons they were using a lower quality film to save on costs? It used to really bother me in the graveyard scenes when you could barely make out what was going on lol, the show definitely got a lot brighter-looking in seasons 3 and 4. I think seasons 1 and 2 are a big reason why Buffy will never get a blu-ray release, they just don't have the HD footage from that time as everything was so grainy-looking back then

And hmm I still brought Buffy and Willow as high-schoolers,but Xander always looked to me like someone in his 20's who was held back :P And for Cordelia it was mostly the way they styled her that made it impossible for me to buy that she was still a teenager, they did seem to dress her a lot older that season and put her hair up a lot more. And they made an inside joke of it when Wesley assumed that she was a teacher at first

Bianca's finally playing an adult as a recurring character on Teen Wolf but two years ago she was still playing a teen on Pretty Little Liars. I couldn't believe it was her because it was like a dozen years since she was on Buffy playing the same age!

VK's hair on Mad Men is just sad--if he really does shave it, thank god!

Aww, they were so baby-faced as kids I want to squish them! Which is probably why young kids aren't cast. Too much, aww!

SMJ is an interesting case as she played an adult as a teen and a teen as an adult.

Maybe she's just versatile? I remember being shocked to find she was only 14 portraying Kendall. And won an Emmy! Wow.

Eliza was 17? I was just rewatching Dollhouse and thinking, does this woman age? But that explains it. She so seemed like an older actress. But maybe that's just the Faith character, you know?

You know, I remember seeing an episode of Doogie Howser, M.D., and thinking how NPH actually looked like a kid. And looking it up, he was actually 16 when he was playing a 16 year old. Rarely is that the case.

Heh. I could buy Nic as a high schooler... sometimes? Mostly it's his hair and their tendency to make him look like on offshoot of The Outsiders or something. Greased hair in the 90's? Not fashionable, at least around here.

Yeah, Buffy's never getting a BluRay release. Crappy film and no way is Fox ponying up the dollars to redo all the SFX. It'd take a bit more than that to get me to rebuy BTVS and AtS anyway. Outtakes and dailies! I'd want more commentaries but after the Bargaining debacle, I refuse to listen to any more.

Yep, although I'm not sure whether she had turned 18 by the time of doing the darker sex stuff in Consequences? Michelle was pretty much still seen as a kid and was chaffing against it when she was 17 at the end of Bts, so it's just odd when you hear Nicky Brenden talk about the pasties that kept slipping off Eliza during their sex scene in The Zeppo and how much he enjoyed the scene for that reason, it's like everyone forgot that she was barely of age when she first played Faith!

And I would probably buy Buffy yet again if it was released on blu-ray because I am just that sad a fan lol. And they could add new features like the Paley reunion? Although yeah it seems highly unlikely to happen when you look at the poor quality early footage they have to work with. Apparently there might be an X-Files release on blu-ray though...

I always heard they don't like to hire actors who are younger than 18 because of the child labour laws. They ran into problems with Claire Danes on My So-Called Life because she was only 14/15 in reality, and so they added in more scenes with the parents instead to give her a break. She was actually only13 when she filmed the pilot, which was the same age as the actress playing her little sister Danielle was at the end of the series! That always weirds me out!

And the actress playing Maria on Roswell was only 17 when she auditioned, she told them that she was 18 and then there was a huge fuss made when FOX found out her real age apparently and she was totally blacklisted until she wrote the all these letters explaining that she would be 18 by the time they filmed the pilot and her age wouldn't be an issue when it came to the hours they could work her for
