I know that I've got a LOT of problems with viruses and spyware on my computer, I was hoping downloading AVG free trial today would help, but when I click on whole computer scan it just cames up like 2 seconds later with "Scan Interrupted. No threats were found". And when I click on fix it comes up with "Could not finish automatic state repair"

I know it's only the free version, but I don't really want to pay for the full version when it hasn't done much to impress me so far that it can clean my computer. Can anyone recommend any effective anti virus programs?

I'd recommend eset. It's used by many companies and you can test it one month for free. It will also warn you, if the old anti virus program wasn't removed properly, so there shouldn't be errors on account of that.

I like Avast on my computer.

But if it's doing what you say, you may be better served to go to antivirus.com and run their online scan first. It often works when the one on the compter won't.

There's Super Anti Spyware for spyware, which is free and gets rid of a lot.

I have always had major problems with AVG. It either doesn't run or screws up my computers. Installed it on one of the computers in my house the other day and now the computer won't even work. It's installed on the computer I'm using now and the program randomly stopped running and I can't even remove it. In my attempt to remove it, I got a virus which I managed to remove with avast!

So I seriously recommend avast. It's free and works great. When I got the virus, my computer slowed down. It wouldn't do a system restore, it froze and I had to unplug the computer. I managed to log on long enough to open avast and did an immediate scan. It didn't even finish the scan before catching the virus and quarantining it which aloud me to run the computer long enough to do another system restore. I did another scan afterward the restoration which caught 3 more viruses. It then asked me to restart and do a boot-scan which scans the computer before windows even starts.

So yes, avast is great. I highly recommend it.

I used to have AVG and there were viruses that kept breaking through. I've had Norton for the last few years and I haven't had any bugs since.

Argh I've tried to run the AVG scan in safe mode and it's still closing after about 1 second, I think my comp must REALLY be a mess :/ I'll give eset a try instead, thanks!

I got rid of AVG two years ago. I use AVAST! which seems quite efficient.

Whatever you do, don't get Norton. If you decide you want to remove it at any point, it's virtually impossible to do so.

I've never had too many problems with AVG, but then I'm pretty careful about viruses. I did get a bad virus once and found the only solution was to Google my problem, and then use the step-by-step methods suggested to remove it. Honestly, if it's a deep seated problem and not just some spyware, that's really the only way you're gonna get rid of it. However, I'd recommend trying an online scanner (http://www.bitdefender.com/scanner/online/free.html) as the ones you download can often get corrupted by the viruses already on your computer.

I've d/l Avast, but it's not running a scan either :/ It comes up with "Unable to start scan. There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint manager"

Urgh I'm starting to think I may need to send my comp off to be repaired or something, it's looking like it's completely messed-up. I'll give antivirus.com a shot

The free version of Malwarebites Anti-Malware has always worked great for me: I usually use about 3 or 4 different programs, but this one always seems to catch trojans, etc. that slip past the other scanners.

try antivirus.com.

IF that doesn't work, I'd probably take it in. I had something similar happen to me a year ago and all they could do was wipe the hard drive. (Luckily all my files were saved though I had to reload all my programs).

I used to use AVG, but a couple of years ago an expert warned me that they had gone off their game. He recommended Avast, I use it, and I have had no problems so far.

Hear hear. The bloody thing has been compared to a virus itself, and it gave me the worst case of screen crash I have ever seen or heard about - the screen looked like a really bad LSD trip.

I had always thought that AVG was the free one that everyone recommends, but yeah it seems a lot of people commenting haven't been impressed with it. Mind you I think my comp is a big part of the problem as well, I knew I had spyware for ages now and a lot of it, but now I've definitely got a virus and nothing seems to be getting rid of it. I can't even go to amazon's website anymore, I keep being redirected to a page asking for my contact details and claiming my account has been blocked (which amazon has confirmed didn't come from them).

How long did it take for scans to work for you on avast? I don't know if I'm just being impatient or if it's not working very well, but I've had a quick scan running for over an hour and it's still on 0%, so I don't know how long I should wait or if something is wrong? It seems to be running sooo slow, but it's also saying that 195 infected files have been found so far which is a bit worrying when it's still saying 0% at the top!

My computer did come with norton and my brother advised me not to use it, but now I'm really kicking myself for not having any virus protection. I should probably have just installed norton in the first place :/

I think I just have so much crap on my system now that I don't know how to go about getting rid of it all.

Thanks for the link! Im running a scan in safe mode at the moment with avast which is taking forever, if I ever get through that then I'm going to give an online scan a try. I'm up to 226 infected files now and the scan is still running at 0% eep

I'm trying avast, but I'm not sure how well its working so far. After an hour and 20 minutes it's only tested 7.1 GB of data, and umm I have almost 500 GB on my comp so it doesn't look like I will ever get through the scan at this rate!

I'm sure it's something to do with how corrupt my comp is though, with just that small amount tested its already found 377 infected files...

I can't remember how long the quick scan took but the full computer scan took about 5 hrs on mine and for about 70% of that time, it said 0% so I don't think the % thing is all that accurate. As long as it's running and finding stuff, it should be fine.

The length the scans take may vary depending on the speed of the computer and if there are a lot of infected files, it is likely to take longer.

If it takes an abnormal amount of time (Like a quick scan definitely shouldn't take longer then 2 hrs), I'd recommend stopping the scan because I think if you stop the scan, you can quarantine/heal whatever infections were already found which may help speed up the computer allowing you to run another scan.

Ah okay, thanks! The 0% was just worrying me because it seemed to show no progress at all

And I just ended the quick scan now after almost two hours of it running and it did come up with the option to quarantine all which hopefully worked (although it crashed after that so I'm not totally sure if it worked or not :cries: ), but I'm restarting the scan now and I'm just going to keep ending the scan and getting rid of current infections after every few hours I think. Thanks fr the tip :)

If you have Windows, there's also Windows Malicious Software Removal, which isn't anti virus that you continually run, but is a Windows program you can download when your computer is having serious problems. It worked for me once. Worth trying.

I think the problem with free avg is that it's been around so long that these nasties have found ways around it. I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and made by microsoft, so I think it works well. But it does take up a bit of space if you're working with an older computer.

in germany, the most popular antivirus is avira
https://www.avira.com/en/index
https://www.avira.com/en/for-home

they have lots of useful separate tools here too:
https://www.avira.com/en/downloads#tools

I used it for many years, but then , microsoft security essentials came around, and since my computer is running with windows, and MS essentials even received good ratings after years of loosing against avira, i switched over.
additionally i run every month Malwarebites Anti-Malware
