I don't download anything, legally or otherwise, but I do buy dvds and books off of Amazon and I will continue to do so through March.
I'm inclined to think we wouldn't be in this bind if people didn't download things illegally in the first place. I've never done it, so I don't see why anybody needs to.
I used MegaUpload to catch up on American shows, I can't bear to wait a year for the DVD's and get spoiled all over tumblr *g* I do buy the DVD's for my shows when they come out, but otherwise they don't give me a legal option for watching before then
I like to discuss my shows with fandom, and it's harder to do that if you're a year behind the current airings
Well... I'm a year behind and I'm just used to that. I just think of illegal downloading as a can't-go-there area and it never occurs to me try it. That way I stay on the right side of the law and I don't do anything to contribute to the problem.
What you do is your business, but I would strongly advise all my friends to quit illegal downloading. You could get your internet connection taken away from you.
(Of course, it would help if everybody had my enthusiasm for spoilers.)
Well I don't mind spoilers for some shows, but for others I find it really adds to the experience to watch the twists as they happen. But it's really being able to discuss the episodes right after they air that I would miss the most if I went back to waiting a year for the DVD's. I used to buy the video boxsets for Buffy actually and catch up with them all in one go! From what I remember Sky brought out the rights for the latest seasons so that the BBC was really far behind in their airings, and the season boxsets then came out before the season had even aired on the BBC.
I just wish that these bigger people weren't so into exclusive distribution deals with Sky or the BBC, so they must decide when we get to watch their content. That might have made sense before the internet and fast d/l speeds became as big as they did, but it feels like a really outdated concept to cling too these days.
I would love if they gave me a legal option of watching tv online with ad's, or even paying for a subscription, but there just is no legal way of watching the American shows I follow
Well certainly they should bring in legal downloading options, but some of the shows I think they want to prevent Europeans from seeing them when they're shown in the US, because they want to air them later in Europe. It's bloody unfair.
That's what frustrates me because it just doesn't work any more and they refuse to see it, so they keep trying to attack the internet instead. The internet and fast d/l speeds has made a joke of these exclusive distribution deals that they are so stuck on, yet there seems to be no effort to find a sensible way of moving with the times and providing a legal way of us watching the content when WE would like too. Instead it's still all about ensuring that Sky or whoever get air all the good films and programs first
I find being a year behind does crimp discussion, but you can still find discusssions to join in. I'd rather be on the right side of the law and not likely to get my internet cut off than be in with all the current discussions.
I know I'm probably pissing you off and I'm sorry about that. But I don't know... this whole Black March thing annoys me. All this pressure to join in this protest... some people don't think about how much reading and watching means to some people and what they're asking some people to give up.
You're not pissing me off ;) I do understand what you're saying and you shouldn't feel pressuried to join in of course, I guess MU has just got me really frustrated with the way that the US government thinks they can take down an entire site like that with no warning. I mean obviously a lot of the content was copyright violations, but many people were using MU as a file-sharing site for their work and personal documents and have now lost everything because of how heavy-handed these bigshot companies are acting in America over protecting their property, while at the same time refusing to move with the times and offer us alternative ways of watching their content legally
Yeah, it's heavy-handed and they should have just shut down the illegal downloading part of the site, which would have taken more work but been a lot more fair. And I agree with you that the companies are refusing to move with the times. It's a global world out there and some people can't face that (Ron Paul and his foreign policy comes to mind). Another thng that pisses me off in this area is DVD/Blu-Ray region coding. That should have gone with the dinosaurs, but it's actually more harshly enforced with blu-ray than with dvd.
Thanks for not getting pissed off with me. :) You're good at being tolerant.
:) Yeah I did buy a multi-region player for DVD's, but now it seems to be all blu-ray these days and unfortunately I could only find a player for UK blu ray. It's frustrating when there are some really nice collections that I would love to buy from America. They always seem to have really nicely put together collections over there, whereas we mostly get all of the seasons in their original packacing shoved into one big box and called a "complete collection"
Yeah, the blu-ray company set the rules that all blu-ray players have to be one region code, so there's no such thing as a multi-region blu-ray player. Which is one of the reasons I haven't switched to blu-ray.
Also, I live in a country badly hit by the global recession and I'm not thinking it's the right time to damage a major industry. Actions have consequences. If the media companies are badly hit by this then the economy will take a blow. And god knows if it can survive another blow. When the economy takes a blow, it's the most disadvantaged people who suffer. If Black March really makes a difference to the industry, it'll be the unemployed, the disabled and the sick who will suffer under austerity measures, in Ireland and elsewhere. No thank you.
Hee I'm kind of the same way, I rarely go to the cinema and it's not like I listen to that much music either. I will mostly be holding off on buying any books through iBooks for that month as my contribution I guess!
I will be doing this just because I'd rather do something than nothing at all. I don't see movies much, but some of the movies I really wanna see are coming out in March so it will be hard, but I will do it to get a point across. The main issue is that there needs to be enough people doing it otherwise it won't matter
Honestly I won't be making that much of a difference either. I rarely go to the cinema, nor do I buy all that much music. Even DVD's really, as I usually save DVD's to ask for as b-day and Xmas presents *g* But I will hold off on buying any books for that month anyway!
