I like Fringe a lot, though I have to make myself disregard the blatant offenses against science. If you don't know -- or don't care as much as I do -- about them, the show becomes a lot more fun.
If you're not good with gore, it's probably not too recommended either. because there is quite a bit of it. But the characters and their relationships are great. Sometimes funny, sometimes touching, and always slightly mysterious.
X-Files meets something like the 4400 or Mutant X (or Eureka) is an okay first-order approximation.
And Joshua Jackson is pretty good in it. At first I had trouble getting rid of my image of Pacey, but the character is different enough that it won't be a problem for long.
I haven't watched Fringe in a while - I lost track of it in the schedules and then never caught up. I'm going to get the DVDs though. I think it's great! It's ridiculous and truly hilarious - the plots in season one were like B-movie horror stuff, blob monsters and spike monsters and other monsters. It was hilarious. And the characters are great. Josh Jackson's character Peter is HOT, but the real draw for me is Olivia, the lead. Because she's more awesome than all the awesome in the world, for real.
It's like the X-Files in the sense that there's a conspiracy at the heart, but the X-Files was much more earnest. Fringe is the X-files' dorky but loveable cousin.
Hee! I hope you like it. It's basically just a fun, fun, FUN show, and if you go into it with some humour you should hopefully find it okay. If you're looking for a serious show, probably not so much. :D
LOL at the 'lasted '8-10 episodes and got bored' comments. It did take me a while to get into it first season- though by say 6 episodes in I was really warming up to the characters. And it does pick up steam. But you have to give it a while. A friend warned me of that when I started it, or I wouldn't have stuck with it.
I think it's fun, I like all the main characters, and by the later half of the first season, the arch really started to grab my interest.
It's not X-Files level of clever, but it's worth watching.
I missed a lot of the first season, like others, I felt sort of bored, but I heard it really picked up towards the end of the 1st season.
I did watch nearly all of S2. It was awesome and completely riveting for me, especially the second half of the season. I surprised myself by being really excited for the 3rd season.
It is similar to X-Files, and Joshua Jackson - awesome. I utterly adore him on the show.
That sounds promising actually. I've noticed that many shows that start off really confident and with an amazing first season, very often start losing their footing after that. Whereas the shows that start off slowly, well they either stay bad :P, or start really improving once they sort out where they want to go. So it's not always a good thing for the first season to be really awesome because that generally means it will be the best season the show ever did, and there's nowhere to go from that but down
I'm also in the lasted-9-episode-and-was-bored-out-of-my-mind-so-I-gave-up club. :) I really tried to like it, but it just wasn't happening for me. I watched it with one of my best friends, a big X-Files fan, and she really hoped it would be a show like the X-Files she could get into, but she gave up after some 7 episodes. So yeah, the beginning is definitely kinda slow and boring. lol I heard it picks up in season 2.
People are saying it gets much better in the second half of season 1 too, so it might be worth checking out again ;) Maybe it's just one of the shows that does a lot better with a central arc
You have to give The Vampire Diaries a try then! It really is a lot better than you might think. It starts off being kind of what you'd expect in the first 5 episodes or so (with lots of voiceovers and journal entries, and the overuse of fog machines). But they have since acknowledged that they were just trying to keep it clse to the books, but realised that it didn't translate well on-screen. The mythology actually starts getting really interesting if you give it a chance
I have sooo much to catch up on first though :P Even with Fringe, I'll have to leave it for a bit cause so much still waiting to watch
I brought Veronica Mars on your rec ;) So there's three seasons of that show still waiting to be watched. Also I need to get started on season 5 of The Wire
I love it. It startsoff a little cliched but MAN, it really picks up, and by the end of season 2 I was like “GIVE ME MORE. NOW.” I ca't wait till it starts again.
I'm looking forward to getting started on it now :D The general consensus does seem to be that season 1 wasn't great early on, but it does get especially awesome in season 2
I think they were getting their feet in season 1. The thing is, you have to see it, because they *do* build on things that happen then. But it's worth it. TRULY.
This is the show I'm most looking forward to returning!
