Gossip Girl 204

Dan was so annoying in this episode, Serena should have slapped him in that final bar scene!!! But at the same time Serena was also annoying the way that she kept apologising for everything, and Dan had a point when he said that either she was responsible for her friends actions or she wasn't. She acts guilty around Dan all the time, and it's like she wants him to judge and find her wanting. Just as with the kissing Nate in 201, she had nothing to apologise for in this episode and seeing her humble herself before Dan was getting so old. Loved when she decided to return to being her old self. The look she gave Dan at the end as she saunters in, that was perfect and I was cackling at Dan's expression :P And poor Blair, but the scene where Serena wraps the scarf around her was really chilling and well done.

The one thing that does confuse me a little is that I never got the impression that Serena was actively mean in the way that Blair can be. Rather that people follow Blair because they're afraid of her, but people wanted to follow Serena because of her IT factor and apparent effortless charm. It really come across that the other girls just adored Serena, and were thrilled and excited to see her back. Whereas with all of the Blair and Jenny drama last season it never came across that the girls actually liked hanging out with Blair, but simply fell into line as her minions. I always thought that old Serena was meant to be an oblivious party girl where things just fell into her lap, and that she got chosen over Blair without having to work for it, rather than Serena treating it as a competition. But then maybe Dan and his asshat ways drove Serena to take it further than she used too?

Anyway I am loving this new bitchy Serena, finally an actual interesting personality may emerge! She has just been such a passive character so far, the Georgina plot was the worst for her character because it promised major scandal and changes, and instead it was all about Serena crying and not knowing what to say to Dan...Thank God those two are broken up at last

And I'm also glad that Marcus is now gone because that plotline did nothing for me, and I wasn't sure what to make of Blair's tears. Originally she was using him to make Chuck jealous, and actually said to Marcus's face that she doesn't really like him and he's boring. Then she finds out he has a title and decides to stick with Marcus, but since when does that equal actually falling for him? Marcus actually made me appreciate Nate/Blair more in retrospect...I had no emotional investment in a love triangle with him, and found it lame that Blair has apparently lost all feelings for Nate. Chuck/Blair are my ship for GG, but rewatching the season 1 DVDs recently made me think that Nate/Blair had some really nice moments too. It's a shame to totally drop them just because of Chuck/Blair appealing to the audience more.

In fact I seem to find it easy to ship Nate with everyone as I really like him with Vanessa as well, and also hope they do Nate/Serena eventually. And of course Chuck/Nate which I wish the show would focus on more friendship-wise at least. It feels like they used to interact a lot more in season 1 (Nate sleeping on the sofa in Chuck's bedroom!!), and now Serena has kind of replaced Nate as the person Chuck confides in maybe?

But then maybe Dan and his asshat ways drove Serena to take it further than she used too?

This was my thought. He kept saying it was her lifestyle, and she was the one responsible, so why not be those things, right?

It might not have been purely that she had fallen for Marcus so much as how humiliating the situation was, especially when she is so conscious of the war going on between her and Chuck.

(blah to your Nate/Blair liking :P)

Nate is the show's little black dress! Totally! Though he seems really disconnected from the main group this season.

Yep that's what I assumed, but I was kind of surprised to see how condescending and mean she was towards Blair in their final scene, that came out of nowhere. I'd have more expected Serena to want to join forces with her old crowd just to get revenge on Dan or something, the one that actually treated her badly, not suddenly turn into a bitch full-time. But bitchy Serena looks so much more interesting, so I'm definitely not complaining!

And it feels like Chuck and Nate's friendship hardly gets any focus compared to Blair/Serena *sniffs* I mean obviously B/S are the most main characters and that's how it should be, I love their friendship, but I wish we could have a few scenes with Chuck and Nate showing caring for one another as well. The finale was so squeeworthy when they made up finally, and you could tell that Chuck really missed Nate. And now it's like they may as well still not be talking, I hope the Blair triangle hasn't damaged the friendship for good :/

Last episode did feel like the good old days of season 1 with them all back at school, I really didn't care for the Soap Opera feel of Marcus and Catherine. Focus on Blair and school politics, and Selena and Blair rivalry is what will hopefully make the show awesome next week :D

I find myself really liking Nate too. He's very shippable.

And I think it's really interesting how there don't seem to be any lingering feelings good or bad b/w Nate, Blair, or Chuck over how things went down. It's possible that I might have missed the blow out from all that though.

I'm completely frustrated with how things ended w/ Nate and Vanessa and that horrible woman. Nate's still under aged, isn't he? Seems like they have a lot more options besides just letting her win. She's basically blackmailing, using coercion and duress, funding prostitution etc.

This is why I can only watch GG in spurts, I can't stop thinking about the real world. But I keep getting sucked back in.

Dan is very condescending and jerky when he knew going in what her lifestyle was like.

Well last season Blair was clearly heartbroken when she lost Nate in 113, and she was still hurt at seeing him with Vanessa. And then suddenly in 201 it's like she's not even bothered at the possibility of Nate/Serena happenning??? I thought they could have got some more mileage out of that triangle personally, especially as they seemed determined to introduce another triangle with Marcus to keep Chuck/Blair separated, and I'd have been much more interested if it were Nate being used there.

And I don't understand why Dan would be so awful to Serena because when has he ever seen her be actively mean in the way that Blair can be, yet he assumed that she was also out to get Amanda. The worst he could say about the Serena he knew is that she can be somewhat privilaged and entitled sometimes, not that she would condonme an innocent girls hair being burned off

I think that it's not so much love as hurt pride. She wanted him to see her as "good enough". She wanted him to recognise the version of Blair that she shows everyone - perfect and at the top of her strata - and he humiliated her by sleeping with the Duchess. Add to that that it came through Vanessa, and it was all over.

I can't believe that the writers think that people like Dan in all his self righteous glory.

Oh yeah that makes sense actually, and it would be another blow after Nate cheated on her her as well/chose Serena over her, and Chuck ditched her

I don't even know what to think about Dan, he's presumedly supposed to be the male lead as he's the only one to be in every single episode, and he's just soo ridiculously judgmental. His judging wouldn't be so bad if he was dating someone like Blair who really can have the spoilt princess attitude, but Serena is always being nice and trying to say she's changed, and Dan gives her a hard time over everything, even something as silly as buying him an expensive watch. I don't blame her for turning bitchy towards him at the end because the whole time they were together and Serena was working on changing, all he could say was that it would never be good enough, like she should feel guilty for having more money than him. Serena was never a bad enough person to deserve his attitude, and his whole putting her on a pedestal and then punishing her for failing to live up to his standards, is just so distasteful. You'd think the Georgina plot would have made Dan question why Serena felt afraid of his judgement, and tell Serena that he he never wants to feel she has to hide any of her flaws from him. But it's like he's incapable of being self-aware enough to look inward, it all has to be about the rich peoples flaws, never mind the reasons why Serena wouldn't trust him to confide in

Maybe it was because I watched it at, like, 2 am, but this episode seemed a little odd to me. Everyone kind of jumping to random conclusions, Dan especially (more than usual).

I also felt the same way as you about "mean" Serena. I too got the impression that her reign was kind of...effortless. That she didn't have to be bitchy, she just had to exist and people would fall in line with her. We'll see, I guess.

It was a lackluster episode for me, but I am always happy to see Dan get put in his place (and have it actually get through his skull). I'm also happy that I don't have to watch real-life couple Blake and Penn make out anymore, because it was grossing me out a bit for some reason, lol.

I felt that they were working a little too hard to make Dan the bad guy actually, I've never disliked him as much as I did last night :/ They never want to blemish Serena too much (the Georgina subplot being the perfect example of that when Serena supposedly "killed someone", and instead it was all about Georgina manipulating the weepy Serena as her victim). But after giving Serena that final push from Dan they did seem prepared to drop the whiff of Mary Sue, and go all out with bitch Serena, so yay for her getting a more interesting personality *g* I just hope that it lasts for a few episodes at least

And hee yes, the D/S making out did start to feel a little gratuitous this year

And this is why I don't bother with the comics :P It has no relevenace to the show IMO, and hasn't Joss even admitted that they wouldn't count as canon if he ever did do a film?

He said he'd be willing to dump the comic story if he needed to for a film, which is pretty much admitting they're not real canon.
