Actually, my choices are 2, 4, and 5. As if the combat boots weren't horrifying enough, I just saw the B/X print. Yech. No thanks.

To be fair though, even before we had any details, I knew it wouldn't feel like canon to me even if Joss had written only stuff I liked. If Spike shanshued, maintained his superpowers, and hooked up with Buffy, I still wouldn't consider it canon.

I can't answer your poll! There is not a choice for 'I will read them because I'm a completionist, but I will probably bitch about them too and maybe even wish they hadn't been written.' ;-)

Also, I REALLY need to find out what the deal is with them. When are they being released? Where can I get info, oh knowledgeable one? *g*

I'm a bit torn, so my answer wasn't 100% accurate. I'm definitely curious so I'll give the first few issues a shot but I'm very hesitant to accept them as canon. I guess I'll just have to wait and see...

There's lots about them in Sci Fi mags and Buffy mag at the moment, they're being promoted quite heavily. Have you seen any of the scans?

Probably not. But the angsty promo with Xander in heartthrob mode (http://lusciousxander.livejournal.com/47772.html) is enough to convince me not to take my chances.

So they are now going to write Xander as male lead, after 7 years of it being Angel or Spike. Just in comic book form. I wonder what NB will take that.

Yeah, even if Spuffy happened in Spuffy comic form, it wouldn't be the same somehow. Although, saying that, I wouldn't be amiss to some Spuffy in the comics still! I did used to enjoy the Spike/Dru comics. But it still wouldn't be canon to me

The stories they seem to be doing, aren't the ones that I'm particularly interested in, but I'll see what the reviews are like I guess

Yes, I'm going to see what the reviews are like, and if they do sound good, nothing stopping me from picking them up and enjoying them :D But my canon ends with Buffy smiling in Chosen, with limitless possibilities in front of her. I wouldn't want to impose a strict canon interpretation on that ending

But Joss writing a comic or novel, I'm less sure about. It doesn't seem to have much to do with the actual show, not when the Buffy tie-in stuff was always treated as extras, and often contradicted the main storyline on the show. The original description of Spike killing two slayers for instance. I never got the impression that novels and comics were supposed to be Buffy canon, or that Joss ever even read them

I'm torn. I mean, it could be a positive jump start for new fic; however, I invested so much time into the television series and the characters the actors portraying them made come alive. It's kind of like recasting an actor mid-series. Probably not a good idea.

I don't even consider BTVS: The Movie to be canon. I've never seen it.

If the creator ( and by that I mean Joss not FOX etc ) writes it and deems it to be canon then to me it is canon even if I didn't like the storyline

The problem I see basing it on actors is that at the very very least SMG wants a number of years away from the role and James has his 5 year limit though I'm sure both could be amenable if there was sufficient incentive

I actually really loved the Tales of the Slayers and Tales of the Vampires comics. Still, I'm not sure I'll be interested in anything sans Spike. If this had been a year or so ago, I would have been freaking out over the comics (probably in a bad way), but right now I feel like I've got enough distance to just not care. For me, the show's canon is the show's canon, and the comics, even Joss comics, don't really affect it.

No, I haven't scene any yet. I'll have a hunt on the weekend. The mags we get here are about two years out of date, so not much use!

Oh, thank you! It looks intriguing. I think I'd view comics as somewhat separate from the show given that you can do different things in that medium. But I'll be interested because it's Joss--I'd like to know what he does with the concept.

I'm not sure. I tend to the opinion that the creator has the right to say "This is canon," regardless of changes in storytelling methods, but from a reader's POV, some canon is more equal than others. For example, is the movie canon? Buffy did burn down the gym according to TV canon, but did she really run away with Pike? And there's the fact that four million people a week, or whatever it was, saw the TV show; only a few thousand of those will be aware of the comic, much less read it. So if I use Comic canon in a fic, will most of my readers accept it as canon, or even realize it's canon?

I'm so happy for new Buffyverse from Joss that I can't even tell you. There's nobody who does it better.

Joss has said he intends to write Spike into the story - 'they're working on it' - getting the rights to Spike's character back.

I'm going to be here for the ride.

There's no real Buffy without SMG. If it's not on the screen it isn't canon.

And no the film isn't canon. It contradicts canon and it tries to pass off somebody who's not SMG as Buffy.

Joss isn't the be all and end all of BTVS. BTVS was a creation of multiple people, not just one man. SMG was at least as important as Joss in making the show, the central character the all the show revolved around was a product of Sarah's talents. I couldn't care less if Joss writes something, doesn't make it canon.

Btw, you should see some of the canon debates I've had with Doctor Who fans. Yikes.

I suppose that I really like Chosen being our final look at Buffy, as her new life is just about to begin.

If Joss had, in an interview, sat down and said how he saw the characters ending up after Chosen, that's sort of the same thing as the comics trying to continue Buffy officially IMO. Not exactly obviously, but for me Buffy was the show produced by the actors and the ME writers, not just Joss's vision alone. I mean Joss was the creater, but then there were a lot of other writers contributing, so I saw it more as a joint effort going into a tv show. So just Joss alone now writing the comics, isn't part of the tv show canon for me. A movie written by Joss, and starring the actors, probably would be though.

Right. Well also Joss and ME always seemed very into allowing the viewer to take away the interpretation that they like. So Buffy's official story ending in Chosen, works for me in that way. Whether Joss want to then write a comic on how he think it would have continued or not, ultimately I don't include that as part of my tv viewing experience with Buffy

I get what you mean by the fact that it was also the vision of other ME writers and of course the actors contributed as well

Well in this case other writers are contributing so that is like the tv show

Has for no actor contributions well there is events in the tv show that we were told happened ,like Xanders adventures between season 3 and 4 or implied happened like Spike hooking up with Harmony (in early season 4 ) that we accept as canon

I'm pretty iffy about season 7 being canon. It was so awful I often like to pretend it isn't there.

Actually, some of them did. I only know this, because I own a few of them. I mean, they weren't the exact storyline, but they were written close enough to fit the time-frame. I have one on Dru&Spike, and then a few others.

Oh I do have that Spike/Dru comic set between seasons 2 and 3! I think it was called Painting the town red?

I can't remember if it's that one or another one. But, I know that I at least have one of them and I think one of Spike himself. ;)

And I know I have one on Cordelia and one of Willow "set during Bargainings", because it's a picture of her from the episode on the cover - or well artwork depicting that era and time frame.
