I'm not sure. I tend to the opinion that the creator has the right to say "This is canon," regardless of changes in storytelling methods, but from a reader's POV, some canon is more equal than others. For example, is the movie canon? Buffy did burn down the gym according to TV canon, but did she really run away with Pike? And there's the fact that four million people a week, or whatever it was, saw the TV show; only a few thousand of those will be aware of the comic, much less read it. So if I use Comic canon in a fic, will most of my readers accept it as canon, or even realize it's canon?
