I felt like the show really was fresher in the first 4/5 seasons, they just got kind of bogged down with the angel storylines coming up again and again so that after a while it got quite boring to me, it’s hard to keep the same sense of awe and mystery as they had in season 4 when angels were first being introduced as a concept. And same with Crowley and his demon minions in hell, I believe that even the actor said that he decided to leave in the end because the character was just going round in circles. Frankly I don’t know why angels have to be such a major part of *every* season, other than maybe as a way to give Castiel more of a role I guess? And the same with Crowley until the actor himself decided to leave, they do seem to have a tendency to overuse the supporting characters and drive certain storylines into the ground when they are fond of the actors
In retrospect I’m shocked that Bobby was ever written out in season 7, even though the actor was clearly another favourite with the cast and crew, although hmm Sera didn’t seem very popular as an executive producer (Jensen in particular was quite honest about not being particularly happy with those seasons), and then she did depart in the same season that she killed off Bobby/attempted to write out Castiel. Purely speculating here, but I wonder now if both of those decisions were factors in everyone on the show quietly deciding that she was attempting to shake up the status quo a little too much
