So who on my flist is still watching The Vampire Diaries next season?

And how many on my flist are watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., cause I'm seriously thinking of giving it a go now? I skipped it in the first place because I wasn't all that into The Avengers movie, so I don't know if that means that it will be an automatic miss for me...But eh I do usually enjoy Joss's other shows (well at least I loved Buffy and Dollhouse, liked Angel, and Firefly was okay), plus I've seen some enthusiastic reviews for it really picking up in the second half of season 1, so would people recommend giving season 2 a try when it airs?

Me! I'm watching both!

Did you see Captain America: The Winter Soldier? If you liked that movie, you'll enjoy Agents of SHIELD. The events of that movie were carried over into the last few episodes of Season 1, which is why it got so good towards the end.

I haven't seen any of the other Marvel films, I think that's part of why I didn't get into The Avengers that much lol because it seemed like it was more aimed at fans of the existing franchise? I went into The Avengers blind, just knowing that Joss Whedon was behind it and it was getting a ton of praise on my flist, but I struggled to care that much about any of it tbh. That's mostly why I've been avoiding S.H.I.E.L.D because I assumed that again it wouldn't be my sort of thing, but I guess that a television show would be better for growing to care about the characters

I still watch, but considering I never even saw last season's finale, I'm hardly an attentive fan. :)

I watch both. TVD is getting a bit stale for me, probably just because it's been on so long. I prefer The Originals.

I love SHIELD. It certainly got better as the characters developed and the plot expanded. I'm not sure how easy it is to watch if you're not familiar with the movies, though (not just the Avengers; it's completely tied into Winter Soldier and there's a Thor crossover too; the first ep this season has a Peggy Carter appearance--she's from both Capt. America movies and cofounded SHIELD.)

Yes to both!

Now that Ric is back, I'm actually excited for the new season. I'd lost my enthusiasm over the previous two seasons.

And also a definite YES to AoS. I'm a huge fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I guess the show works on its own as well, though. As someone else pointed out, it incorporates the events of The Winter Soldier, but it should be perfectly comprehensible and exciting enough without knowing the movie. But to get the most out of it, knowing the other movies is definitely a plus.

Yeah I found my interest waning towards the end of season 5, it's a shame because I was really loving the first half of that season, but it seemed to lose something after they killed off Katherine :(

I did find myself enjoying the first half of TvD season 5 a lot, but then getting pretty bored towards the end :/ I wasn't a big fan of Enzo and all of the drama there. It's a shame because I really liked him in the flashback episodes and when he was first introduced, but then I found that he became waaaay to much when he was suddenly Damon's new best pal and seemed to be around all the time, the later drama with those two and how super close they suddenly were felt really forced Idk. I need to rewatch season 5 though really, a lot of what happened escapes me now. (And I haven't seen The Originals)

And hmm okay, thanks. Would you say that it's still a reasonably self-contained show that is easy to pick up though, or does it only make sense if you've seen the movies as well?

I'm excited for some stuff, not so excited for all of the Delena in the trailer :P And things do seem to be getting pretty drawn-out now, they're not promoting it as the final season, but I wonder if season 6 is going to be the one to wrap everything up? I don't know what the actors contracts are though, and I *think* I remember Julie Plec talking like her plan was to end it in season 7?

it should be perfectly comprehensible and exciting enough without knowing the movie.

Thanks! I guess I could try some of the other movies, maybe some of them would be my thing than The Avengers was? I just don't find myself watching many comic book movies tbh, the only other ones I've seen were the first two X-men films (loved them mostly for Wolverine and Rogue and for Magneto), Batman Begins (okay from what I remember, but a bit slow in parts), and Superman Returns (eh I think I liked it more than most people seemed too lol, but it wasn't that great I guess)

If you start with ep 1 and go in with the basic knowledge of SHIELD being a spy agency involved with superheroes/aliens etc. and that Coulsen was dead and now isn't, you should be okay. The first episode introduces all the other characters--all new to the universe.

You should have no problem with the first half of the series. It's the huge tie-in with Winter Soldier that might really confuse you. If you don't want to watch that movie, I highly recommend reading a detailed synopsis of it. I actually watched the ep that dealt with the fall out from the movie before seeing the movie and wasn't spoiled and even I, a Marvel fan for decades, was a bit lost.

I don't want to scare you off because I really love the show and it got so very good as it went along. There are plenty of Jossisms (and J. August Richards plays a big role as a recurring guest star and Amy Acker is in an ep so Joss is, as always bringing in his actors) and it's fun and sexy.

They pretty much screwed up the Delena thing with the sire bond, didn't they? I mean, I'm pretty much a multi-shipper on this show. If it's done right, I'll go with it, but I feel like they handled this really badly. Anyway - they'd better remember their strong suits. You know, surprisingly great characters for a cheesy vampire teen drama. I came to dislike characters like Caroline and Elena lately, even though I loved them before. And Elena'd beter rediscover her agency. I wonder why she has to be recued all the damned time now that she's a vampire, when she handled herself pretty well as a puny human. /rant over :P

Well, The Avengers really relies on the groundwork the other movies built. They are all pretty character-driven - and for an ensemble movie The Avengers is too, but I can see why it wouldn't really click when you haven't seen the other movies. I think watching the first Iron Man movie would be a great start. And for watching Agents of SHIELD, both Captain America movies would be good. The first one has a few cheesy bits, but if you concentrate on Steve (and Bucky! And Peggy!), it's actually great. And The Winter Soldier is simply amazing. Holy Moly! Well, if you try some of them out, let me know, what you think! :)

Yeah I was always more of a Stelena shipper, but I thought that Delena had a good build-up in seasons 1 and 3 (wasn't such a big fan in season 2 admittedly), but the writing for them as a couple as been all over the place ever since they introduced the sire bond. For Elena too :(

And thanks for the recs! I'm thinking of giving Winter Soldier a try. I didn't dislike The Avengers exactly, it had some good bits and I remember it getting better towards the end, but yeah overall I wasn't particularly engaged. I convinced my sister and brother-in-law to see it with me after I read all of the gushing on my flist, and they were kind of side-eyeing me afterwards for my choice because none of us were particularly into it :P

For the full Winter Soldier experience, I'd recommend watching Cap 1 as well, despite the slightly cheesy villain. It's the origin story that makes you really appreciate Steve (my mother totally wanted to adopt him) and the events from Cap 1 are heavily referenced in The Winter soldier. Gah, now I'm having a lot of Steve Rogers feelings again. Happens a lot lately, lol.

Tbh, none of the SHIELD characters are that riveting. The only one I care about is Melinda May, and she's probably had less screen time than any of the others.

I can't wait for TVD to come back!

I hope the cliffhanger is resolved quickly, because I don't think my heart could stand much of that into the season.

The actors' contracts end after S6. Kat at least said earlier this year that she plans to quit after S6 and focus on her music career. Also, when they were signing the actors for S7, one of the three (probably Nina) apparently said they weren't sure if they were going to sign for S7. Since then, they've started to say the series might end after S6. There's a theory that it's just a publicity stunt to raise ratings, though.

I always get the impression that Ian and Paul might not sign for more also, Paul especially has been quite vocal on not always being happy with the writing, but I guess that things can always change if they get really good offers (which I would except from the CW to keep the show going) to stay. It would be a shame to lose a lot of regulars, so I hope that they manage to wrap things up while most of the cast is still intact at least.

I guess that the actors leaving the show would be one way to end the writer cheats though, and ensure that the regular characters actually stay dead :P
