"The WB 20th anniversary: Ranking all 32 of the network's dramas from worst to best "
I thoroughly approve of Buffy, Dawson's Creek, and Gilmore Girls being the top three <3 And hmm Felicity is #4, I never actually watched that show, but I've been wondering lately if it might be worth checking out as a lot of people seem to like it? There have been soooo many high-school based shows, it might be a nice change of pace to watch one focused on the college years for a change :P (Oh and Angel is #5, Smallville is #6, Roswell is #10, and Supernatural is #11)

They kept renewing them and they interfered where they could, but I really think they wanted a teen-friendly network of non-scifi/fantasy shows and wished they'd go away, not realizing that teens are as discerning as adults and just want shows aimed at them to be well-done,genre or not.
I suppose, after Vampire Diaries took off, they realized sci-fi and supernatural drama is where they get the fanbase that sticks and put all their eggs in that basket. How times have changed.
I don't know if this new direction happening sooner would have saved SV in the final seasons, but I think the paltry effects budget would have been better, at the very least.

With shows like Gossip Girl, they seemed to be favoured over SV because the demo that they attracted still brought in far more money than Smallville when it came to what they could charge for ad spots during that show, even though their actual ratings always seemed pretty bad to me, but I'm not sure exactly how it all works
