The CW Fall Schedule has been announced

I know that this won't be popular with a lot of my flist, but meh I really feel like the CW have gotten O/T with superhero shows now, Friday is starting to look a bit out of place with the rest of the weeks line-up! :P I'm disappointed that there doesn't seem to be much space for anything else on their schedules at the moment, iZombie, The 100, Reign, and Riverdale are all being held back for mid-season. I assumed that iZombie had been picked up for 18 episodes again like last year, but apparently not?

And it's looking like The Good Wife spin-off is confirmed now CBS plans 'Good Wife' spinoff led by Christine Baranski

[identity profile] malicat.livejournal.com 2016-05-19 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
If iZombie comes back in January,it could get at least 16 episodes like Legends of Tomorrow or The 100!

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-05-19 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope so, when they first announced that it had been picked up there was no suggestion that it would be mid-season only, so I'm kind of bummed about this :( People are saying in the comments that the writing will be tighter with only 13 episodes and that this is a good thing, but I actually found season 2 even stronger than season 1, so I don't know that it's a show that will necessarily benefit from a shortened season when the main arc tends to be quite involved. I remember hearing that they assumed that they were getting 22 episodes for season 2 originally, and so they had to cram everything in to the final episodes a bit/cut out some character scenes which dealt with Liz's family, so it sounds to me like 13 episodes isn't going to be enough to fit everything in

16/17 episodes would be okay, but I'll be disappointed if it's only 13

So iZombie is only going to be like 12 eps?

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-05-19 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I've no idea, but the first season 1 was mid-season and only had 13 episodes, so I'm guessing that it will be the same as that for season 3?

Well, nothing for me on that schedule, since I will drop The 100 after the finale and I'm tentatively interested in Riverdale (I need to see a trailer to know more) and it'll be midseason.

Are you interested in the spin-off? If they had done it two years ago, okay, but right now I can't imagine watching more of anything related to TGW.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-05-19 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll only be watching The Vampire Diaries, and then iZombie whenever it airs. Honestly I do miss the days when the CW (and the WB) focused more on the young female audience, the DC line-up just isn't my thing

Are you interested in the spin-off?

Not really tbh! I'm mostly mildly interested in how they address the finale and where Alicia ended up, but otherwise I'm not not really desperate for more legal cases. I don't think I'll be able to watch it anyway, I had a look and apparently that streaming service blocks access to the UK

I really need to catch up on their superhero shows. I do agree it's kinda taken over their line-up, though I do think CW's a better fit for Supergirl.

Sucks that iZombie is being held back to mid-season. :(

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-05-19 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, it did make sense to move Supergirl to the CW, it just kind of sucks for me personally that half of the CW's line-up for Monday-Thursday only consists of superhero shows! Oh well, it's probably the right business decision when it comes to the ratings

And yeah I would have been more prepared if they had said that iZombie was coming back mid-season in the first place, but I was expecting it to have another 18 episodes, so that was a bit of a downer :( I'm wondering actually if plans could have been changed at the last minute for iZombie or for The Originals when they found themselves needing somewhere to fit in SuperGirl? Like I was saying above, they really don't give themselves enough spaces for new shows when they air no programming on the weekends, and only two shows a night during the week

[identity profile] bm-shipper.livejournal.com 2016-05-19 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind about "the 100" and "Reign" as I'm not watching those shows anymore anyway, but I'm a little sad that iZOMBiE didn'T get a full season. I wish they´had made TVD "mid-season" and instead put iZOMBiE in there for a full season, but oh well...

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-05-19 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I am wondering now if some of the CW's other shows won't be getting full season orders as they have to fit in the mid-season shows as well? Someone was speculating that maybe only Supernatural and the DC shows will get full season orders of 22/23 episodes. I would have expected the CW to announce it in advance if TVD, JTV, and CEG weren't getting full seasons, but then they never said anything before about iZombie episodes being cut back, so who knows

I haven't seen that show, but it's definitely good to see a bit of diversity in the line-up with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Jane The Virgin :)

Yeah I'm disappointed about the mid-season thing for iZombie and TO, although I expected no less for Reign. iZombie does pretty well for a CW show (0.5 demo) and TO does well too when you consider it's in the Friday death slot after TVD (0.3).

I hate the superhero takeover too. :/ It feels so formulaic and overtly cash grabby, I dunno.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-05-20 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I'm puzzled at how iZombie is getting overlooked. I recently read that the network are hoping to get TVD back for another year after season 8, even after Ian and Kat announcing that they'll be done soon, and TVD usually gets about 0.3/0.4 in the demo, so it's like iZombie is doing any worse than that!

And yeah at least you would get a wider range of shows if say the CW decided to concentrate on Sci Fi or on drama for example, because there's a lot of very different shows you could get that fall under those categories, but when you're adapting shows like The Flash and Supergirl the formulas are all more or less very similar, so it does feel like the CW is being overtaken with the DC Superheros when it's *every* night but Friday's

Between all the DC and Marvel shows, it's definitely gotten to be too much. Especially if you add in shows like Person of Interest, that Powers adaption, and a few other odds and ends. It's amazing that we have good shows now rather than The Cape or other badly developed junk, but when most of genre tv is all the same flavor it's kinda sad.

It's a flavor I like, but it's too much.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-05-20 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
And it wouldn't be so bad if they were less spread out even, they could have had say Monday's and Tuesday's for Supergirl/Legends Of Tomorrow and The Flash/Arrow, but the way they've been spread out all week does cause me to have a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to The CW becoming the DC hour now. Especially with the CW having such limited slots for shows anyway because of them only airing Monday's-Friday's

[identity profile] ericadawn16.livejournal.com 2016-05-20 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I was looking forward to Riverdale...and holding out hope that Jughead will be the Zdarsky version...

I would be more excited about the spin-off if was on actual CBS and not their App. or whatever.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-05-20 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
Riverdale is the one CW pilot I've been thinking of checking out, the others seem kind of meh, so of course Riverdale would be the one pilot that they hold back! :P Idk it doesn't seem like the CW is interested in reaching a younger demo as much any more when you look at their current line-up, but they've been branded a network for young females for so long that that's still what I associate them with

And yeah same, when I first heard about a spin-off for a streaming service I was actually picturing it as having shortened episodes of maybe 30 minutes in length and being a bit different from a network show of 40 minutes, but I'm not sure how exactly they're going to be doing it?

[identity profile] place-to-hide.livejournal.com 2016-05-20 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I kind of hate that iZombie and The Originals won't be back til mid-season.

I say they should have Arrow & Flash on the same night. Then Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow on the same night. Just seems more fitting to me. I don't understand this new line up on the CW.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-05-20 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah it wouldn't seem so overwhelming to me if say Arrow and The Flash were on the same night, I think that would work better definitely to have them in one block, otherwise it's a bit much when you look over the schedule and its shows with the same theme on every day but Friday's. I guess I can understand the reasoning behind it though, those shows usually have the highest ratings, so I suppose that they want to use them all as lead-ins for their other shows that are struggling. It's really shifting the direction of the network though :(

It makes me sad that iZombie will only be returning in midseason. I wonder why that is?

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-05-20 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe they just couldn't fit it in anywhere else (my guess is either The Originals or iZombie lost their slot to Supergirl's late addition to the line-up), or it was always planned because the ratings weren't what they hoped for? I'm surprised because obviously with Reign and The 100 those shows always come mid-season and its expected, but there was never any hint that iZombie was getting cut back, it aired with the CW's other shows last year and had 18 episodes, so this does feel like the network is now downgrading them for whatever reason

I understand the feeling. I do like superhero shows but not only is it indeed taking over the CW schedule, but the bigger problem is that the writing is so pedestrian on these shows. We tried the two new shows this season and gave up on both halfway through, and finally dropped Arrow as well. A bunch of well written shows will keep me watching even if they are all about the same thing.

It makes sense financially though. Not only are these shows giving the CW visibility in a way they really struggled with for their first 5 years, but because they're WB shows, they're making more money from these than just the initial ratings.

I'm quite surprised they were willing to give CEG another season. That's really a novel show and gave them their first bit of attention from a major award, but I heard the ratings were dismal.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-05-21 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
And also all four of those shows are by the same man (Greg Berlanti), so inevitably they're going to have similar voices. It's not even a mixture of wildly different superhero shows like for example Gotham to go with The Flash, or Jessica Jones to go with Supergirl

It does make financial sense though, so I suppose we can't argue with that :( It's ironic looking because though because Smallville used to get fantastic ratings for the CW, especially when they had big event episodes with other superheroes, but they never had any time for that show. They moved it to Friday's, they refused to spin-off Arrow or Supergirl with the SV characters, back then they only valued the female demo and couldn't care less about SV's higher ratings...

And I've heard spec that they keep JTV and CEG because they're the only shows that bring them critical acclaim and golden globes, as opposed to their supernatural shows rarely getting awards recognition. It doesn't look like they're planning on investing in CEG long-term though if it's been moved to Friday nights?

I think that's around the time that it usually airs? That show has always been mid-season, I don't think that they've ever aired it in September for whatever reason

The first thing I reacted to when I saw their lineup was the lack of iZombie until mid-season. I think it'll be better as a viewer because hopefully it'll mean fewer gaps between eps but I don't want to wait that long.

I dropped Arrow this season but am still watching The Flash. I've been dvr'ing Legends of Tomorrow to see if I like it but I gave up on Supergirl after a couple eps because the writing was shitty. The CW doesn't have that much for me at this point, although I'm interested in checking out Frequency and probably Riverdale.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-05-21 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
That's true I suppose, the gaps do get annoying when they bring a show back for two weeks, then take another break, I'm mostly just worrying about how much the episode order might have been cut :( If it's 16 episodes then fine, but meh I don't want to go back to a half season of just 13 episodes...

I watched about 10 episodes of The Flash, but in the end I concluded that it just wasn't my thing. And I must confess that I only watched the pilot of Supergirl, I found the writing too clunky to continue with it. Those shows are clearly great adaptions when it comes to bringing the comic books to life, but frankly I found the writing of the characters on The Flash a bit shallow and hard to get invested in, so it wasn't really for me. I guess I prefer my comic book adaptions a little grittier and with more of a real world feel, whereas I get the impression that part of the appeal of shows like The Flash is that they do such a great job of feeling like they're bringing the comic book to life and making viewers feel like they're watching a live-action adaption of them?

The Good Wife spin-off

WHAT WHAT WHAT?

I mean, Diane Lockhart deserves her own show, the goddamn queen... and I guess I'm happy that Lucca might get some character work other than Sassy Black Friend and weird Alicia/Jason shipper??? But overall I need help reacting to this.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-05-21 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems pretty random to me too, apparently it's going to be set a year after the finale and feature Diane and Lucca, but TGW never really struck me as a show that had a ton more storylines left to tell, I thought that everyone involved agreed that it ended at more or less the right time? I could actually understand spinning Lucca off more as she's a pretty new character and there's a lot of different places they could go with her, but Diane was such a major part of TGW that I can't help feeling like this will just be more of the same old drama with the law firm, I'm curious as to how they plan to make it its own entity when it features a major player from that law firm

I'm interested to see how CW fits all these shows in midseason.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-05-22 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I'm wondering how that's going to work, someone suggested that maybe some of the shows like JtV and CEG might have shortened seasons of 16 episodes, that way they could end them earlier and fit the mid-season shows in their slots

[identity profile] orangerful.livejournal.com 2016-05-22 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to wait until midseason for iZombie to come back??!?!??! Did CW not watch the finale?!?! I need to know what happens next!

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-05-22 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, it's just cruel to make us wait until next year!

[identity profile] janetmaca.livejournal.com 2016-05-26 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
The 100 seems to be always held back to that time, but it works with the episode order it gets. I'd say no complaints from me but damn, I don't know what to do with myself without that crippling anxiety. lol That being said, I'm not a fan of the superhero genre so the CW seems less and less like the network I'll stick with.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-05-26 09:45 am (UTC)(link)

I hear you about the superhero oversaturation :/ I actually LIKE superheroes and DC comics, but I can't stand the ones on the CW--they either bore me entirely or I actively dislike them, and I can't really put my finger on why but the general tone of Legends of Tomorrow/Arrow/Supergirl just doesn't work for me.

JtV and The Originals is about the only thing I watch on the CW anymore but I'm sorry to hear about iZombie :/ I'm not even sure how all those shows are going to be able to return in midseason, and keep up with the ones who are still airing. I was really excited for Riverdale too, so I'm sad to hear about it getting sidelined into a midseason show.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-07-08 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I like some superhero shows (Daredevil for one!), and I used to enjoy Smallville back in the day as well, but I guess that the CW shows all feel really similar to me because they're all created by Greg Berlanti and all have very similar tones. I don't really know how to explain it, but it seems to be very much based on tha feel of comic books being taken directly from the page to live-action? And for someone who isn't a big fan of comic books, that was never going to appeal to me.

I'm definitely watching way less on the CW than I used too, just TVD (which is probably ending soon anyway) and iZombie
