I don't get this trend of leaving icon posts open for two/three days, then flocking them, making public fic posts, then flocking them. It's so frustrating when I have fic saved in my LJ memories, only to find it's been flocked since when I want to reread it (this seems to happen particularly with Supernatural fandom for some reason).

What happened to the days of people locking personal posts only, and leaving fandom-related posts public. I miss them *sighs*

*hops on grumpy wagon*
I don't like when they do that either.
Also I dislike that most coloring tutorials now are just PSD files and you have to join and then comment to get the password?? is this just so they get lots of comments for their community?? So a high comment count means they're a better icon maker? pfft.
Also large icon posts with like 20 fandoms but they all have less than 5 icons per fandom in their batch, I may have unlimited bandwidth but I'm not clicking for like just 3 icons.

*hug*

Ooh yes that's something else I don't really get. Some people post something like 200 icons (no exaggeration) in just the one entry. I don't get why people wouldn't just post them in two posts if they have that many, rather than save them all for one gigantic post which can take ages to load.

ETA And ditto with posting 20+ gifs in one entry, it always causes me comp to freeze up *kicks it* and I have to keep constantly reuploading the page and starting again if I really want to see them all. Life is hard *g*

Oh I find that very irritating. I tend to go look back several months at a time through icon communities and get frustrated when I come across so many locked posts. If you're that afraid someone will steal something, don't post anything on the internet!

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2010-01-22 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Gah seriously. I guess the motive with icon makers a lot of the time is to get more members for their communities, but what is with this trend of icon posts being linked at public communities, only to find that you have to ask to be added if you actually want to view the entry (and wait to be approved in some cases even). If you want to keep your icons private then KEEP them private, don't promote your flocked entries in public icon communities

I am noticing, at least, that many of the newsletters won't link to closed posts, but a lot of people get around that by doing the 'leave it open to all for a few days' thing. I'm a member of icon communities and newsletters precisely so I don't have to friend a hundred people I only want icons and fics from.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2010-01-22 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
For a while there I got into the habit of just temporarily friending and then unfriending the comms if their teaser post made me want to see the icons, but since some icon communities had this whole wait to be approved by the maintainer deal going on, I generally don't bother with locked icon communities at all now.

Although saying that, the trend these days is tending more towards "open for three days" which is slightly less aggravating. But urgh why does everyone have to follow one another like sheep when it comes to these things

This is why I save fic I want to read as PDFs. Of course this means I have over 1000 of the damn things...

The multi-fandom icon post thing annoys me too, which is why I tried to keep them out of [livejournal.com profile] marsters_daily (and put up with the abuse in return).

I used to save Buffy and SV fic all the time before I joined LJ, but I have since got into the habit of just saving them in my LJ memories and relying on that. I have so many saved on LJ that I would probably cry if LJ ever crashed and lost them, so I guess it might be worth considering a back-up plan anyway *g*

[identity profile] blueleopard87.livejournal.com 2010-01-22 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree!! It's so frustrating! When people do that for icons, I just don't even bother and move on to someone else's icons. There are so many good icon makers out there that I can be perfectly happy with ones that are easily available to everyone. But fic is another thing all together- there are some fics that I bookmark because I want to read them again, and I hate how often I come back later to find out they've been taken down or made private for 'personal reasons' or whatever the excuse of the day is.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2010-01-22 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Urgh I know, the fic that I discovered had been locked today, there wasn't even the option of asking to be friended as the LJ owner "isn't adding people at this time" :/

It's fic being written under a LJ username, it's hardly personal details or writing under your own name, so what's the big deal about leaving it public once you've already put it out there

Guh, I hate that.
Or even more annoying "the post will be locked in 24 hours". Excuse you, why don't you put a countdown as well?!
I still think the main reason behind that is to get more members in their communities. Bandwidth is usually used as an excuse, because "people hotlinked and now I *have* to do this!!11!", but most of the people who say that don't even seem to understand how so-called hotlinking works, and that they're the ones hotlinking when they crosspost all over (especially if they have a huuuge icon post + gazillion animations). *sigh*
Anyways, yes, it's a big pet peeve of mine. :)
That is why I added "no linking to locked posts", or at least leave them open for a week, as a rule in every com I maintain. It's nice to delete offenders if they don't unlock it after the warning. >:)

I haven't seen any locked fic yet. *knocks on wood*
It only happened with fic posted to one com, but they lock everything R/NC-17, so I just joined and solved the problem. :D What's the excuse behind locking that?

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2010-01-22 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Suddenly locking all of your fic seems more prevalent with SPN fandom, I've come across it a few times now, and I don't remember that ever being an issue in Clex fandom. Maybe it's because people feel more dodgy about writing SPN fic as it often involves RPF or wincest, but so long as you're not putting your actual name on it then I don't get the big deal

[identity profile] black-panda-ops.livejournal.com 2010-01-22 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I was under the impression it was done to discourage hotlinking.

Is that not correct?

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2010-01-22 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure what the reasons are, I've always figured it was just to get more members for the icon community, but duskwillow has said that people say it's because of hotlinking too

I wonder why pimp the locked posts in all these public comms though if hotlinking is such an issue. Either people want to keep their communities private or they don't, it's this promoting locked (or about to be locked) entries to the public that gets annoying.

And with fic, I'm less sure of the reasons why people lock those entries later, but in those cases you often do end up completely end up losing access to fic that you might have really enjoyed reading :/ It's not as often that fic is posted at a community that you can join, and getting people to add you to their individual LJ's isn't always easy

[identity profile] ladydreamer.livejournal.com 2010-01-22 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It's obnoxious to do that.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2010-01-22 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
It all seems to be getting almost elitist in some ways, people used to pretty much always post their fandom related works publicly when I first joined LJ, and these days there are probably more locked icon communities than there are open ones. And if people really do want to post their work privately then I can respect that, but it usually seems to be a case of having locked communitities as a way of getting as many members as possible to join your comms. People have locked communities at the same time as pimping every new icon batch they make at all the public comms, and "join to see". Although I know that the GG general icon community came up with rules on don't link locked posts, so now the "it's being locked in three days" posts are more common

[identity profile] ladydreamer.livejournal.com 2010-01-22 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
When I have the choice, I tend towards making the rules against locked post. How annoying is it to have to friend everyone?

[identity profile] isilweth.livejournal.com 2010-01-22 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. Yes. I figure if they want to hide their icons, they don't want them used, so I don't even bother with locked icon communities.

Also, that's why I started a fic journal when I f'locked my journal. That way the fic is always public and I don't have to worry about it.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I wish it was more of a trend to post fic in a seperate community. I always thought the point of posting fic was to get as many people as possible reading and enjoying it, not just the exclusive few that have been given access to locked personal LJ's

[identity profile] starry-dawn.livejournal.com 2010-01-22 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's because icon-makers and fic-writers want people to JOIN their communities, so they leave their stuff public for a bit so people can get a taste and then lock them, so if you don't get it within that 2-day period, it's gone unless you join/watch. IDK. The concept baffles me too.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's even more aggravating with fan fic because so often it's posted on personal LJ's, suddenly the person locks it all, and then doesn't want to add any new people :/

[identity profile] sol-se.livejournal.com 2010-01-22 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate that. Arg.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad people are agreeing anyway, I was half expecting to be bitched at for my entitlement *g*

It just set me off today when I clicked on a fic in my memories to reread and "you do not have access to this entry". It's fanfic for goodness sake, not entries on your personal life. Why do people suddenly feel the need to lock fandom-related things like that

[identity profile] withafireinside.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I know! It's annoying. I've noticed it mostly with icon posts. I've always saved fanfic on my computer when I want to re-read it, just in case it's taken down, but I've never noticed a lot of locked fics, except for certain RPS communities.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I've only really come across this with SPN fandom where you save fic in your memories, then go back to find that it's been locked since and almost impossible to get access to. I haven't come across it with fic in my other fandoms, although yeah the locked icons are a trend everywhere
