Comic-Con: 'The Vampire Diaries' to End With Season 8

"We all have discussed it and we've made the decision that this is it," Plec told fans Saturday. "This is going to be the final season of The Vampire Diaries. It's bittersweet and emotional and we're all going to be crying in a minute. It's been a beautiful run.... Get ready, because it's going to be an epic ride."

The final season also will be a shortened one, consisting of 16 episodes. The show returns Oct. 21 at 8 p.m.

While once the cornerstone of The CW, The Vampire Diaries, based on the books of the same name, has, like many other veteran series, begun to show its age. In the past few years, the drama was bypassed as the network's most-watched show by The Flash as The CW has made DC Comics fare (including Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow and CBS import Supergirl) a priority.

“The Vampire Diaries has meant so much to so many fans around the world, and has meant so much to all of us at The CW,” network president Mark Pedowitz said in a release shortly after the news broke at Comic-Con. “I am a huge fan of the show myself, and I’ve seen every episode. So I am very happy that we can give Julie and Kevin the chance to finish their story the way they have envisioned, and to give viewers a fantastic conclusion to eight spectacular seasons.”

I haven't had a chance to watch the panel yet, but supposedly Kevin Williamson will be coming back for the final season as well? I'm happy that they're going out on their terms anyway, it feels like it's time. It was always my hope that the writers would know from the beginning of that season when the show would be ending, so hopefully this will give everyone a chance to work towards the ending and wrap things up properly.

And TVD being cut down to 16 episodes clears up what some of us were wondering about the number of shows that the CW renewed, it sounds like TVD (and possibly other shows?) will be finishing early to make way for the many other shows on the schedule. Honestly I'm a little bit surprised that they didn't want to end with the usual 22 episodes, but still 16 episodes isn't a bad number, and it will be a good thing if it means taking less weeks off in-between episodes! I assume they wouldn't be taking so many breaks anyway, that they'll want to finish the run early next year so that they can introduce their mid-season shows to the schedule?

Aww yeah Katherine's ending was a tough one, I know that several of my friends dropped out after that :( It still seems so arbitrary that she was the *one* character that we saw getting sucked into Hell and eternal torment, so I'm half hoping that they might use the finale to address Katherine's fate as well as Elena's, and maybe give her a better ending? Who knows though, they did seem pretty definite at the time that that was it for Katherine :(

At the moment I'm expecting them to build up to the Delena reunion for the finale, and for Nina's return to mostly be about that...

That pissed me off so much. When I heard that happened I was absolutely outraged, because out of all the horrible, manipulative, sadistic, murderous characters on that show why was Katherine the only one who seemingly deserved that kind of fate? Especially after everything that she had gone through, everything that she had endured herself? Such unfair, double standard bullshit (exactly the kind of thing I expect from TVD, unfortunately). If they do address it, I feel like it would be too little, too late.

And ugh, DNW on Delena. If anything, I would rather Damon go to Hell forever in exchange for Katherine. But that is just my wishful thinking.

Oh I totally agree, the show treated Katherine with such terrible double standards to such an extent that they seemed to forget that she wasn't in the wrong with Elijah and Klaus , she was fleeing for her life from Klaus's plans for her. How dare she take her life into her own hands I guess, and not trust in Elijah's promises to save her. Season 5 did a lot to humanise her character when she became human again and met her daughter, but then the show seemed to want to conveniently forget all that and make her the *one* villain that deserves to get sucked into Hell

I wasn't happy with where the show ultimately went with Damon and Katherine either, but at this point I expect the finale to go all-in with Delena, it's what most of the viewers will be hoping for
