Comic-Con: 'The Vampire Diaries' to End With Season 8

"We all have discussed it and we've made the decision that this is it," Plec told fans Saturday. "This is going to be the final season of The Vampire Diaries. It's bittersweet and emotional and we're all going to be crying in a minute. It's been a beautiful run.... Get ready, because it's going to be an epic ride."

The final season also will be a shortened one, consisting of 16 episodes. The show returns Oct. 21 at 8 p.m.

While once the cornerstone of The CW, The Vampire Diaries, based on the books of the same name, has, like many other veteran series, begun to show its age. In the past few years, the drama was bypassed as the network's most-watched show by The Flash as The CW has made DC Comics fare (including Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow and CBS import Supergirl) a priority.

“The Vampire Diaries has meant so much to so many fans around the world, and has meant so much to all of us at The CW,” network president Mark Pedowitz said in a release shortly after the news broke at Comic-Con. “I am a huge fan of the show myself, and I’ve seen every episode. So I am very happy that we can give Julie and Kevin the chance to finish their story the way they have envisioned, and to give viewers a fantastic conclusion to eight spectacular seasons.”

I haven't had a chance to watch the panel yet, but supposedly Kevin Williamson will be coming back for the final season as well? I'm happy that they're going out on their terms anyway, it feels like it's time. It was always my hope that the writers would know from the beginning of that season when the show would be ending, so hopefully this will give everyone a chance to work towards the ending and wrap things up properly.

And TVD being cut down to 16 episodes clears up what some of us were wondering about the number of shows that the CW renewed, it sounds like TVD (and possibly other shows?) will be finishing early to make way for the many other shows on the schedule. Honestly I'm a little bit surprised that they didn't want to end with the usual 22 episodes, but still 16 episodes isn't a bad number, and it will be a good thing if it means taking less weeks off in-between episodes! I assume they wouldn't be taking so many breaks anyway, that they'll want to finish the run early next year so that they can introduce their mid-season shows to the schedule?

Hi hon! How are you? Good to see you post! I have never seen TVD but it's been rec'd to me in the past. Perhaps someday!

Thanks :) It's been a nice and relaxing week so far, I've had the week off work, so I've just been doing a lot of lazing around in front of the computer or the tv mostly lol

Lazing is often the best!!

It's probably for the better, though I'm not personally concerned since I stopped watching a year ago. It seemed fitting to stop when Nina left.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-07-23 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Nina has apparently always said that she wants to come back for the finale, so Elena should be back for the end thankfully! But yeah 8 seasons is a good run, it's hard to enjoy a show once it's been stretched out to nine, ten seasons or more, so I'm glad that TVD is ready to come to an end now. It probably was one or two seasons too many, but there were enough good episodes and arcs mixed up in there (the season 7 episode with Damon re-living the same day again and again was one of the best they ever did!) that I'm going to really miss it once it's wrapped for good :(

Indeed ::sighs:

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2016-07-23 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I never went past the third season, I think. I only watched the scenes with the characters that were relevant to me, but imho the show went downhill pretty damn fast, and even worse once Nina left (well, once they killed off Katherine I was like, lol nope bye). I know it's supposedly been said that Nina would return for the series finale, so I wonder what they're gonna do.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-07-23 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww yeah Katherine's ending was a tough one, I know that several of my friends dropped out after that :( It still seems so arbitrary that she was the *one* character that we saw getting sucked into Hell and eternal torment, so I'm half hoping that they might use the finale to address Katherine's fate as well as Elena's, and maybe give her a better ending? Who knows though, they did seem pretty definite at the time that that was it for Katherine :(

At the moment I'm expecting them to build up to the Delena reunion for the finale, and for Nina's return to mostly be about that...

[identity profile] rogueslayer452.livejournal.com 2016-07-23 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It still seems so arbitrary that she was the *one* character that we saw getting sucked into Hell and eternal torment

That pissed me off so much. When I heard that happened I was absolutely outraged, because out of all the horrible, manipulative, sadistic, murderous characters on that show why was Katherine the only one who seemingly deserved that kind of fate? Especially after everything that she had gone through, everything that she had endured herself? Such unfair, double standard bullshit (exactly the kind of thing I expect from TVD, unfortunately). If they do address it, I feel like it would be too little, too late.

And ugh, DNW on Delena. If anything, I would rather Damon go to Hell forever in exchange for Katherine. But that is just my wishful thinking.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-07-23 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I totally agree, the show treated Katherine with such terrible double standards to such an extent that they seemed to forget that she wasn't in the wrong with Elijah and Klaus , she was fleeing for her life from Klaus's plans for her. How dare she take her life into her own hands I guess, and not trust in Elijah's promises to save her. Season 5 did a lot to humanise her character when she became human again and met her daughter, but then the show seemed to want to conveniently forget all that and make her the *one* villain that deserves to get sucked into Hell

I wasn't happy with where the show ultimately went with Damon and Katherine either, but at this point I expect the finale to go all-in with Delena, it's what most of the viewers will be hoping for

I think it is time, but I am a bit miffed about only 16 episodes though.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-07-23 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I was a bit taken-aback at that as well, but 16 episodes should still give them enough time to end things decently and without too much filler, so I'm happy from that perspective. It does make me worry about how the CW will treat their other non-DC shows though if even TVD won't be getting a full season

It always makes me happy when creators know at the start it's their last season. Glad the show will end how they want it to! TVD's been up and down sometimes but I have to say I did not ever expect to love this show as much as I did, glad I listened when the internet kept telling me it was good!

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-07-23 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
My thoughts exactly, it's always frustrating when a show is hastily tied up and you can tell that wasn't the ending they would have chosen if they had more time, so it's awesome that everyone will be going into this season of TVD on the same page

I think it's time, and I'm fairly confident that Katherine will make a return for the finale. Her ending was so ambiguous; we never really saw what happened to her, and I think the writers wanted to leave it open-ended so they could bring her back.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-07-23 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope so!! I'm just assuming that it will be all about finding a way to bring Elena back and give her scenes with all of her loved ones again, but I would love it if they find a way to include Katherine in the finale as well. She really deserved better :(

[identity profile] girlwhowaited.livejournal.com 2016-07-24 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Sad to see this series coming to a close as of next year. I'm still about a season behind. I'm waiting for it to show up on Netflix :3 Ever since Elena left I think the viewership might have dropped with the romance she had with Damon and Stefan. I hope it has a good ending.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-07-24 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
Ratings haven't been what they were definitely, but I get the feeling that it's probably ending more because of the actors, Ian and Kat have both said that they were done after season 8, and Julie Plec always said that the show would come to an end once Ian and Paul felt like it was time

[identity profile] bm-shipper.livejournal.com 2016-07-24 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like a LOT of shows (and a lot of MY shows) are ending in the next season. I'm not surprised about TVD, and I'm kind of GLAD it ends and I hope they do manage to bring Nina back, like they want to, and I do hope they find a solution for her where Bonnie doesn't have to die to have Elena get her happy ending, but I guess we'll see (and technically if they turned Bonnie into a Vampire she would die and Elena could be back even though Bonnie would be back too, even though I don't know if that would even work)...

Anyway... hope they are writing a good end and I'm now glad I stuck it out. I DO wonder what it means for "The Originals" and if TO will end too after next season. Probably...

I mean, Bones is ending and Teen Wolf too and then there is TVD and BEauty and the beast is ending too and, and Musketeers is airing the last 2 episodes within the next week as well, and then there is Switched at Birth and Pretty Little LIars, all which are going to end soon... so I'm gonna lose a lot of shows in the 2016/2017 season and I bet that's not even all and that there will be some cancellations possibly as well, or other shows deciding to end (like I feel like SUITS might be one of them and the Last Ship as well), so yeah...

Let's see what happens...

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-07-24 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
and technically if they turned Bonnie into a Vampire she would die and Elena could be back even though Bonnie would be back too, even though I don't know if that would even work

I wondered that, but Idk someone said that would count as a loophole and would still kill Bonnie? :shrugs:

I've lost a lot of shows as well, The Good Wife has finished recently, and then next year will be The Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars ending for me as well :( I haven't picked up that many new shows recently, and a lot of shows that I am following have shortened seasons (X-Files, iZombie now, Doctor Who, Daredevil, From Dusk Till Dawn etc). The Big Bang Theory is going to pretty much be my only year-round show soon!

And I don't follow The Originals, but I'm guessing that it isn't ending just yet, or they would have announced it alongside TVD at CC? I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to move some TVD characters over to that show even, if Candice agrees than I can definitely see them wanting to bring Caroline over. And *maybe* Stefan too, although I'm not sure if Paul would be into that or not after being one of the main leads of TVD, but Stefan and Caroline strike me as the characters that have the best chance of moving over there anyway because of their pasts with Klaus. (Whereas Ian and Kat have both been definite that this is it for them with Damon and Bonnie, so I'm not expecting them to make any appearances). Bringing Stefan or Caroline over is going to mean another show for me actually, cause that would be one thing that really would entice me to try and get into that show!

[identity profile] braverys.livejournal.com 2016-07-24 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
In a way, I'm sad that this next season is the last, but on the other hand, I'm ready for it. I honestly don't think they should have continued without Elena and didn't find the seventh season to be particularly interesting, but I'm holding on because this show has brought so much light into my life. Also I heard that Nina might be back in the finale?

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-07-24 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
I feel similarly, I'm really going to miss this show, but at the same time it feels like it's the right time to end it.

Nina should 100% be back for the finale, Julie Plec has always been very definite on how Nina has said that she will definitely want to return for the finale to bring closure to Elena. She still seems pretty close with them all, reportedly she also filmed a quick voice-over for them at the end of season 7 when Damon hears Elena's voice

Wow, this and Teen Wolf ending. I'll have to catch up with both soon. (I'm in s6 for TVD, and s4 for TW.)

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-07-24 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope that you manage to catch up in time to watch the final season live :) Season 7 had its moments, but season 6 especially was a really great year I thought, Kai was one of my favourite villains.

I doubt I will, tbh, but we'll see.
I don't remember if I've 'met' Kai yet or not.

[identity profile] favoritexrecord.livejournal.com 2016-07-24 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
As sad as I am to see it go, it's definitely time. It probably should've ended when Nina left, though I did end up enjoying the second half of last season.

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-07-25 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah it always has moments that I still enjoy, but it does feel like they've pretty much exhausted any possible storylines at this point, so it definitely feels like the time is right to end it

[identity profile] mfirefly10.livejournal.com 2016-07-24 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I was expecting this so it wasn't really a surprise. I was actually pleased about the 16 episode order because I assumed they'd do something like 12/13 for the final season so 16 felt like extra :)

Very, very pleased Kevin is back. And I hope that means Bonnie will get a decent ending. Kevin's apparently very fond of Bonnie/Kat so hopefully that means they'll find a way around the stupid sleeping curse so Bonnie doesn't have to die for Elena to wake up.

I imagine we'll get a few breaks here and there but nothing like it usually is because they'll want to finish early enough to launch The Originals in that time slot. (I'm assuming, of course. They could always put a different show there but it makes sense to have The Originals take over TVD's slot.)

[identity profile] frelling-tralk.livejournal.com 2016-07-25 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
True, I was expecting it after Ian and Kat both said that they were leaving after year 8, but somehow it still came as a bit of a surprise to me when it was officially announced *g* I thought that they would get a full season though, I always thought they were a pretty solid performer for the CW on Fridays, but I guess not :shrugs: I'm happy enough with 16 episodes though, hopefully this will give them the opportunity to put together a really solid arc to finish on
