Comic-Con: 'The Vampire Diaries' to End With Season 8
"We all have discussed it and we've made the decision that this is it," Plec told fans Saturday. "This is going to be the final season of The Vampire Diaries. It's bittersweet and emotional and we're all going to be crying in a minute. It's been a beautiful run.... Get ready, because it's going to be an epic ride."
The final season also will be a shortened one, consisting of 16 episodes. The show returns Oct. 21 at 8 p.m.
While once the cornerstone of The CW, The Vampire Diaries, based on the books of the same name, has, like many other veteran series, begun to show its age. In the past few years, the drama was bypassed as the network's most-watched show by The Flash as The CW has made DC Comics fare (including Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow and CBS import Supergirl) a priority.
“The Vampire Diaries has meant so much to so many fans around the world, and has meant so much to all of us at The CW,” network president Mark Pedowitz said in a release shortly after the news broke at Comic-Con. “I am a huge fan of the show myself, and I’ve seen every episode. So I am very happy that we can give Julie and Kevin the chance to finish their story the way they have envisioned, and to give viewers a fantastic conclusion to eight spectacular seasons.”
I haven't had a chance to watch the panel yet, but supposedly Kevin Williamson will be coming back for the final season as well? I'm happy that they're going out on their terms anyway, it feels like it's time. It was always my hope that the writers would know from the beginning of that season when the show would be ending, so hopefully this will give everyone a chance to work towards the ending and wrap things up properly.
And TVD being cut down to 16 episodes clears up what some of us were wondering about the number of shows that the CW renewed, it sounds like TVD (and possibly other shows?) will be finishing early to make way for the many other shows on the schedule. Honestly I'm a little bit surprised that they didn't want to end with the usual 22 episodes, but still 16 episodes isn't a bad number, and it will be a good thing if it means taking less weeks off in-between episodes! I assume they wouldn't be taking so many breaks anyway, that they'll want to finish the run early next year so that they can introduce their mid-season shows to the schedule?

At the moment I'm expecting them to build up to the Delena reunion for the finale, and for Nina's return to mostly be about that...

That pissed me off so much. When I heard that happened I was absolutely outraged, because out of all the horrible, manipulative, sadistic, murderous characters on that show why was Katherine the only one who seemingly deserved that kind of fate? Especially after everything that she had gone through, everything that she had endured herself? Such unfair, double standard bullshit (exactly the kind of thing I expect from TVD, unfortunately). If they do address it, I feel like it would be too little, too late.
And ugh, DNW on Delena. If anything, I would rather Damon go to Hell forever in exchange for Katherine. But that is just my wishful thinking.

I wasn't happy with where the show ultimately went with Damon and Katherine either, but at this point I expect the finale to go all-in with Delena, it's what most of the viewers will be hoping for

Anyway... hope they are writing a good end and I'm now glad I stuck it out. I DO wonder what it means for "The Originals" and if TO will end too after next season. Probably...
I mean, Bones is ending and Teen Wolf too and then there is TVD and BEauty and the beast is ending too and, and Musketeers is airing the last 2 episodes within the next week as well, and then there is Switched at Birth and Pretty Little LIars, all which are going to end soon... so I'm gonna lose a lot of shows in the 2016/2017 season and I bet that's not even all and that there will be some cancellations possibly as well, or other shows deciding to end (like I feel like SUITS might be one of them and the Last Ship as well), so yeah...
Let's see what happens...

I wondered that, but Idk someone said that would count as a loophole and would still kill Bonnie? :shrugs:
I've lost a lot of shows as well, The Good Wife has finished recently, and then next year will be The Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars ending for me as well :( I haven't picked up that many new shows recently, and a lot of shows that I am following have shortened seasons (X-Files, iZombie now, Doctor Who, Daredevil, From Dusk Till Dawn etc). The Big Bang Theory is going to pretty much be my only year-round show soon!
And I don't follow The Originals, but I'm guessing that it isn't ending just yet, or they would have announced it alongside TVD at CC? I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to move some TVD characters over to that show even, if Candice agrees than I can definitely see them wanting to bring Caroline over. And *maybe* Stefan too, although I'm not sure if Paul would be into that or not after being one of the main leads of TVD, but Stefan and Caroline strike me as the characters that have the best chance of moving over there anyway because of their pasts with Klaus. (Whereas Ian and Kat have both been definite that this is it for them with Damon and Bonnie, so I'm not expecting them to make any appearances). Bringing Stefan or Caroline over is going to mean another show for me actually, cause that would be one thing that really would entice me to try and get into that show!

Nina should 100% be back for the finale, Julie Plec has always been very definite on how Nina has said that she will definitely want to return for the finale to bring closure to Elena. She still seems pretty close with them all, reportedly she also filmed a quick voice-over for them at the end of season 7 when Damon hears Elena's voice

I don't remember if I've 'met' Kai yet or not.

Very, very pleased Kevin is back. And I hope that means Bonnie will get a decent ending. Kevin's apparently very fond of Bonnie/Kat so hopefully that means they'll find a way around the stupid sleeping curse so Bonnie doesn't have to die for Elena to wake up.
I imagine we'll get a few breaks here and there but nothing like it usually is because they'll want to finish early enough to launch The Originals in that time slot. (I'm assuming, of course. They could always put a different show there but it makes sense to have The Originals take over TVD's slot.)
